00:01:34  All right, so I'll go ahead and click in order to create

00:01:37  another corner point, and you can see that Illustrator

00:01:39  automatically joins the two points with a straight segment.

00:01:43  And now you can continue clicking to create

00:01:45  a free-form polygon.

00:01:47  If you move your cursor back to the first point in the

00:01:50  path outline, you'll see a little circle next to it,

00:01:53  which tells you you're about to close the path.

00:01:55  And once you have, the asterisk comes back to tell you

00:01:58  that if you're going to click again, you're going to create

00:02:01  yet another path outline.

00:02:03  All right, in addition to closed paths, you can create

00:02:05  open paths as well and there are two ways to do that.

00:02:09  You can either press the escape key

00:02:12  in order to turn off that path outline

00:02:14  and that will allow you to create a new one,

00:02:16  or I'll go ahead and wake this path outline back up

00:02:19  by moving my cursor over it.

00:02:21  And you can see, now I get a little line next to the cursor,

00:02:24  which I call the resume cursor because it allows you

00:02:26  to resume, modify in the path.

00:02:28  And so notice as soon as I click on one of these endpoints,

00:02:31  I, again, see my rubber band preview and the asterisk

00:02:34  next to the cursor once again disappears.

00:02:37  And now I'll just go ahead and click a couple of more times.

00:02:40  And now let's say, once again, I'm done editing.

00:02:43  The other thing you can do is press the enter key,

00:02:46  here on the PC, or the return key on the mac,

00:02:48  and that'll go ahead and deactivate the path outline.

00:02:52  And, as you can see, I get the asterisk back next to my

00:02:55  pen tool cursor, which means that if I start clicking

00:02:58  over on the other side of the document here

00:03:01  I will begin a new path outline.

00:03:03  Another option that's available to you when you're

00:03:06  modifying open path outlines, is the ability

00:03:09  to connect to open paths, and you can do that

00:03:12  just by moving your cursor over to the endpoint

00:03:15  of an inactive path, such as this one right here.

00:03:18  At which point, you'll see a little anchor point next to the

00:03:20  cursor, which tells you that you're about to connect the two

00:03:23  path outlines as well as deactivate them.

00:03:27  Which is why, I once again have an asterisk

00:03:29  next to my cursor.

00:03:31  Now in addition to creating paths with the pen tool,

00:03:34  you can also modify them.

00:03:36  And you do so by first selecting the path outline,

00:03:39  which you can do by pressing and holding the ctrl key,

00:03:41  or the cmd key on the mac, which gives you temporary access

00:03:45  to the last used arrow tool.

00:03:47  At which point, you can go ahead and click on a path

00:03:49  outline, such as this one, in order to select it.

00:03:52  Then, go ahead and release the ctrl key, or the cmd key

00:03:55  on the mac, and now move your cursor

00:03:57  over an existing segment.

00:03:59  At which point you'll see a plus sign next to the cursor,

00:04:02  which tells you that if you click, you're going to

00:04:04  add an anchor point, like so.

00:04:07  Now let's say I want to move the anchor point to

00:04:09  a different location.

00:04:10  Well if I press the ctrl key, or the cmd key on the mac,

00:04:13  and try to drag that point, I'm going to move the entire

00:04:16  path outline, because after all, my last used arrow

00:04:19  was the black arrow tool.

00:04:21  So I'll go ahead and press ctrl z or cmd z to undo that

00:04:24  move, I could manually switch back to the white arrow

00:04:27  by pressing the a key, or I can switch between the

00:04:30  arrow tools on the fly by pressing

00:04:33  ctrl ~ here on the PC.

00:04:36  And, as you may recall, the tilde key is the one in the

00:04:38  upper left corner of an American keyboard.

00:04:41  Now on the mac, that's not going to work.

00:04:43  That's going to switch you between open documents,

00:04:46  and so what you have to do instead, is press

00:04:48  cmd, option, tab, and that will go ahead,

00:04:51  in my case, it'll switch me back to the black arrow tool.

00:04:54  So in other words, either ctrl ~ on the PC,

00:04:57  or cmd, option, tab on the mac, is going to toggle

00:05:00  between the black and white arrows.

00:05:03  At which point, I can keep that ctrl key down,

00:05:05  or the cmd key down on the mac, and then I can click

00:05:08  on that new corner point that I just created

00:05:10  and I can drag it to a new location.

00:05:12  And that's a pretty great way to work, by the way.

00:05:15  You just go ahead and release the key, hover your cursor

00:05:17  over a segment, click in order to add an anchor point,

00:05:21  and then ctrl or cmd drag it to a different location.

00:05:24  And I'll go ahead and do it again here and ctrl or cmd drag

00:05:27  it over to this location, and so I can contine working

00:05:30  that way as much as I like.

00:05:32  Now you also have the option of deleting anchor points.

00:05:35  And you do that by hovering your cursor over an existing

00:05:39  point, like so, at which time you'll see a minus sign

00:05:42  next to the cursor, and then all you have to do is click

00:05:45  in order to make that anchor point go away.

00:05:48  And now I might just ctrl drag or cmd drag that point upward

00:05:51  a little, and this works, by the way, with any path outline.

00:05:55  It doesn't have to have been drawn with the pen tool.

00:05:58  So, for example, let's say you want to create a free-form

00:06:00  triangle; then one way to do that is to grab the

00:06:03  rectangle tool, which again, you can get by pressing the

00:06:06  m key, and then you can just go ahead and draw

00:06:08  any kind of rectangle you like.

00:06:10  Then, switch to the pen tool.

00:06:12  Which again, you can get by pressing the p key,

00:06:15  and then, go ahead and click on one of the anchor points

00:06:17  to delete it and you end up with a triangle.

00:06:20  You'll also see a brief message saying that the shape

00:06:22  has been expanded because it's no longer a so called

00:06:25  smart rectangle here inside Illustrator.

00:06:29  And now I can go ahead and ctrl drag or cmd drag

00:06:32  any of the anchor points in any manner that I like.

00:06:35  And that's how you create and modify corner points

00:06:39  just by clicking with the pen tool, here inside Illustrator.

00:01:48  So I'm going to change this stroke to None,

00:01:51  and then I'm going to zoom in

00:01:53  by pressing ctrl + 0 or cmd + 0 on the mac,

00:01:57  so that we can see these next two steps in vivid detail.

00:02:00  And what you want to do to access these patterns

00:02:02  is click on the little library icon

00:02:04  in the bottom left corner of the Swatches panel,

00:02:07  drop down to Patterns,

00:02:09  then go to Decorative,

00:02:10  and finally you want Vonster Patterns,

00:02:13  which is going to bring up

00:02:14  this little micro panel right here.

00:02:16  Now, if you want to better see what you're doing,

00:02:18  then click on the fly out menu icon

00:02:19  and choose Large Thumbnail View,

00:02:22  and that will provide you with a better view

00:02:23  of every single one of these patterns.

00:02:25  And then again, assuming that your Fill is active,

00:02:28  go ahead and select this guy right here, Bugaboo,

00:02:31  which is going to give you this pattern here.

00:02:33  All right, now I want to add another

00:02:35  pattern, Splatterz, in front of it,

00:02:37  and so I'm going to go up the Window menu

00:02:39  and choose the Appearance command

00:02:41  to bring up the Appearance panel

00:02:43  and then I'll go ahead and drop down

00:02:45  to the second icon in the bottom left corner,

00:02:48  Add New Fill, in order to add a new fill pattern.

00:02:51  And now make sure that Fill is selected

00:02:53  and go ahead and click on Splatterz

00:02:56  in order to add it to the mix.

00:02:58  And now you can go ahead and close this floating panel.

00:03:01  And now I'm going to switch back to the Layers panel

00:03:04  and I'm going to click in the lock column

00:03:06  in order to lock the background layer.

00:03:09  Now the thing about what we're seeing

00:03:10  is it's not entirely currently accurate,

00:03:13  and that's because Illustrator's GPU preview

00:03:16  has a few known issues, meaning that it's a bit buggy.

00:03:19  And so if you really want to see what's going on,

00:03:21  then go up the View menu

00:03:23  and choose Preview on CPU,

00:03:25  and you will see this more accurate,

00:03:27  and I think better interaction.

00:03:30  And that's how you add an eye-catching

00:03:31  paint splatter background to any piece of artwork

00:03:34  here inside Illustrator.

00:03:54  so we can see them a little better.

00:03:56  That's caused by the fact that

00:03:57  our arced lines are still filled.

00:03:59  And we can fix that up here in the swatches panel.

00:04:01  Make sure your fill is active and then click on None

00:04:04  or you can just press the slash key.

00:04:06  All right, now we need to change

00:04:07  this one interval line right here to four lines.

00:04:10  And you do that by returning to the Object menu,

00:04:13  dropping back down to Blend, and choosing Blend Options.

00:04:17  And then, go ahead and change Spacing

00:04:19  to Specified Steps so that we can control

00:04:21  the number of steps that we're seeing.

00:04:23  Turn on the Preview check box,

00:04:25  and then click inside that value that currently says 1

00:04:28  for that one step right there,

00:04:29  and then press the up arrow key

00:04:31  until you get an effect you like.

00:04:33  For me, I went with four steps like so.

00:04:36  At which point, you can go ahead and click OK.

00:04:39  And that, friends, is a very brief introduction

00:04:41  to a feature called blending in Illustrator.

00:04:44  And we'll be seeing more of it in the advanced course.

00:04:46  All right, now I'm going to go ahead

00:04:48  and switch back to my curvature tool

00:04:50  and I'm going to alt or opt click right there

00:04:53  to create a corner point.

00:04:55  And then, I'll click, let's say, right about there

00:04:57  and here as well, what I'm trying to do is

00:05:00  draw some goopy paint at the end of the brush.

00:05:03  And so I'm just going to create

00:05:05  a total of three loops right here

00:05:06  and then I'll click at this location, up here,

00:05:09  and then finally, I'll click at the very first corner point

00:05:12  in order to close that path.

00:05:14  And now I'll go ahead and change the fill color

00:05:16  for that paint to the paint that begins R=237

00:05:20  in order to produce this effect here

00:05:22  and then I'll press the v key to switch

00:05:23  to the black arrow tool,

00:05:25  and I'll go ahead and click off the shape to deselect it.

00:05:28  And now I'll press ctrl+0 or cmd+0 on a Mac

00:05:31  in order to zoom out.

00:05:33  And that is, at least one way,

00:05:34  to add a few line art embellishments

00:05:36  using a combination of the curvature tool,

00:05:39  along with the make blend command here inside Illustrator.

00:02:48  that Illustrator isn't adding more points

00:02:51  to your path than you want.

00:02:52  Alright, now I'm going to zoom in on this metal area

00:02:55  and I'm going to surround it with a different path outline.

00:02:58  And so I'm going to start things off

00:02:59  just by clicking four times like so

00:03:02  in order to add a bunch of points around this region.

00:03:05  And then I'm going to convert them all to corner points

00:03:07  by double-clicking on each and every one like so.

00:03:11  And you might ask, well, why am I drawing them first

00:03:13  and then converting them?

00:03:14  And the reason is just this time around

00:03:16  I prefer to work that way.

00:03:17  Alright, I'm going to move these guys down

00:03:20  and inward like so,

00:03:21  and then I'm going to create a new point right here

00:03:23  and drag it up, so that we have this nice arc right there

00:03:28  at the bottom of the bristles.

00:03:29  And now I'll move these guys down and in as well.

00:03:33  And I'll go ahead and click here

00:03:35  to add another smooth point,

00:03:36  and I'll drag it up to add another arc.

00:03:39  And if I want it to bend a little more

00:04:05  And I'll go ahead and call this guy paintbrush

00:04:07  and I'll change its Color to Gold.

00:04:09  And then I'll click OK.

00:04:11  Alright, now I'll turn off

00:04:13  the brush parts layer to protect it,

00:04:15  and I'll select everything on this layer,

00:04:17  the paintbrush layer,

00:04:18  by clicking in its upper right corner right there,

00:04:20  where that little triangular wedge is,

00:04:22  and then I'll grab my Shape Builder Tool.

00:04:24  And I'll go ahead and double-click

00:04:27  on the central portion there,

00:04:28  I'll double-click on the bristles,

00:04:30  and I'll double-click on the handle as well,

00:04:32  just to make sure everything's divided up.

00:04:34  And then I'll press the V key

00:04:36  to switch to the black arrow tool.

00:04:38  I'll click off the path outlines to deselect them.

00:04:40  And I'll go ahead and click on this guy

00:04:43  and shift + click on this one

00:04:44  and press the backspace key,

00:04:46  or the delete key on a Mac, to get rid of them.

00:04:48  Alright, now I'll go ahead and click

00:04:49  on the bristles shape right there

00:04:51  and I'm going to change its fill to this shade of brown,

00:04:54  the one that begins R =117,

00:04:57  and then I'll click on the handle,

00:04:59  and I'll change it to the shade of purple

00:05:01  that begins with R 102.

00:05:04  Alright, now I'm going to press ctrl + 0,

00:03:31  And the great thing about the tools that we've been seeing

00:03:34  is that they're perfectly capable

00:03:35  of editing each other's results.

00:03:37  For example, if I wanted to at this point

00:03:39  I could go ahead and switch to the Pencil Tool,

00:03:42  which of course I can get by pressing the N key.

00:03:44  And then with this path selected

00:03:46  I could go ahead and drag along it,

00:03:49  taking special care by the way

00:03:51  to make sure that I'm beginning and ending my drag

00:03:53  on the path outline.

00:03:55  And then I'll go ahead and release

00:03:56  and I got that result, which I really don't like by the way,

00:03:59  so I'm going to undo by pressing control + Z,

00:04:02  or command + Z on the Mac.

00:04:03  And I'm going to try again,

00:04:04  see if I can get a smoother result

00:04:05  and this does not look smooth at all.

00:04:07  So you know what?

00:05:11  And notice now I have way more points,

00:05:13  but this is what I want you to see,

00:05:15  if I start adjusting these points

00:05:17  it's very possible, well in that case nothing happened,

00:05:19  but it's very possible that I'm going

00:05:21  to get different results.

00:05:22  And this guy it looks to me like we don't really need him,

00:05:25  so I'll just click on him and press the backspace key,

00:05:27  or the delete key on a Mac, to get rid of him.

00:05:29  Then I'll select this guy and press backspace or delete,

00:05:31  that looks like that was a mistake,

00:05:33  so I'll put him back by pressing control + Z.

00:05:39  I started with the Pencil Tool,

00:05:45  until you start getting smoother result.

00:05:48  And having demonstrated that about as well

00:05:51  I'll go ahead and switch back to the black arrow tool

00:05:53  and click off of the shape.

00:05:54  And you can see even though it didn't occur on video

00:05:57  that in the final version that I drew here

00:05:59  that I do have a pretty darn smooth path outline.

00:06:02  So it is ultimately possible to achieve

00:06:04  the effects you're looking for.

00:06:06  And that's how you draw

00:06:07  a highly specific custom path outline

00:06:09  with varying degrees of success

00:06:11  using at least in part the Curvature Tool

00:06:14  here inside Illustrator.
