00:02:47  and then I'm going to once again grab the shape builder tool

00:02:50  And I'll just divide things by clicking on this top portion

00:02:54  and then clicking again in this bottom area

00:02:56  and then alt or option clicking on the ellipse

00:03:00  outside of the start because we don't need it.

00:03:02  And then I'll switch back to the black arrow tool

00:03:05  by pressing the v key.

00:03:06  And I'll go ahead and click off the shapes to deselect them.

00:03:09  And then I'll click on this top shape to select it.

00:03:12  And then I'll click on the first swatch

00:03:13  up here in the control panel to change the fill

00:03:15  and I'll set it to this final color in the group

00:03:18  which is C1 M8 Y32 K5

00:03:22  in order to produce this effect here.

00:03:24  Alright now we need to create an inset reflection

00:03:27  and so I need to go back and get the main star

00:03:30  once again by clicking in the corner,

00:03:32  the upper right corner of the main star layer.

00:03:35  That'll go ahead and select the contents of that layer

00:03:37  which is just that one shape.

00:03:39  And then I'll alt drag or option drag it

00:03:41  up the stack like so to make a copy of it.

00:03:44  And now I'll go back to my shapes layer down here

00:03:47  turn it on, click on the big ellipse,

00:03:50  alt or option drag its square up to the inset layer,

00:03:53  turn that shapes layer off again,

00:03:55  and then I need to click on the big star to select it

00:03:58  and we want to inset it.

00:04:00  We want to move all of its points inwards

00:04:02  so that the shape becomes smaller

00:04:04  and you do that by going up to the object menu,

00:04:06  choosing path, and then choosing offset path.

00:04:09  And normally you're offsetting the path

00:04:12  outward like so and you can see what that means

00:04:14  by turning on the preview check box.

00:04:16  That's not what we want though.

00:04:17  We want to take it inwards.

00:04:19  So enter a value of negative three

00:04:22  and then click the okay button

00:04:23  in order to accept that change.

00:04:25  And that leaves a copy behind right there incidentally,

00:04:28  so you want to get rid of that copy

00:04:30  by selecting it and then pressing the backspace key

00:04:33  or the delete key on the Mac.

00:04:35  And then you want to select the inset path,

00:04:37  get rid of its stroke once again

00:04:39  by changing that stroke to none

00:04:41  and then click on the big ellipse.

00:04:43  And I want to change the color of both of these shapes

00:04:46  to the darkest of the brass colors

00:04:48  which is C21 M49 Y100 K7,

00:04:52  and then we're going to switch back

00:04:54  to the shape builder tool again.

00:04:55  And click on this top shape, click on this one as well,

00:04:59  and then alt or option click on the portion

00:05:01  of the ellipse we no longer want.

00:05:03  Alright, now I'm going to switch to the black arrow tool

00:05:05  once again, click off the paths to deselect them,

00:05:08  and click on this guy to select it.

00:05:10  Now generally, you probably want to fill the shape

00:05:12  with a gradient, but we're not going to

00:05:14  get to the gradient tool until the advanced course,

00:05:17  so for now just go up to the effect menu,

00:05:19  choose stylize, and choose inner glow.

00:05:22  And here's the settings I came up with.

00:05:24  So the first thing you want to do

00:05:26  is click on the color swatch right there,

00:05:28  and then click on the color swatch's button,

00:05:31  and then navigate your way down to the browns,

00:05:34  which are pretty low in the list as you can see here.

00:05:37  The one we want is R96 G56 B19

00:05:41  which is the second to darkest brown, then click okay.

00:05:44  You want to change the mode to multiply

00:05:46  so that you're darkening the star with this color.

00:05:49  An opacity value of 30 percent works really nicely,

00:05:52  and I cranked the blur value up to 50 points.

00:05:55  And if you want to see what that looks like,

00:05:57  just go ahead and turn on the preview check box

00:05:59  and you'll see that soft darkening effect right there

00:06:02  at which point you can go ahead and click okay

00:06:04  in order to accept that change and then just go ahead

00:06:07  and click off the path outlines to deselect them.

00:06:10  And now if you zoom in over here,

00:06:12  you can see that this reflection carries on

00:06:14  past the inset to those original objects below.

00:06:18  Alright, and so that's it.

00:06:20  I'm going to go ahead and press control zero

00:06:21  or command zero on a Mac to zoom out.

00:06:23  And that's at least one way to use the shape builder tool

00:06:26  to create an inset reflection here inside Illustrator.

00:02:18  to that dark brown, once again,

00:02:20  R66, G33, B11.

00:02:23  I'll go ahead and change the Lineweight to four points,

00:02:25  and I'll drag the stroke below the fill, like so,

00:02:29  in order to produce this effect.

00:02:31  All right, now let's add a dotted border

00:02:33  by once again getting the Ellipse Tool.

00:02:36  And I'm going to again, Alt click,

00:02:38  or Option click at the intersection of those two guides.

00:02:41  And this time I'm going to set the Width value to 575,

00:02:44  the two values are still linked,

00:02:46  so that changes the Height value, as well.

00:02:47  I'll go ahead and click Okay

00:02:49  in order to accept that change, and I'm

00:02:51  going to get rid of the fill up here in the Control Panel

00:02:54  by getting rid on that first swatch

00:02:56  and changing it to None.

00:02:57  And then I'm going to change the color of the stroke

00:03:00  to this brightest Brass color

00:03:01  which is C0, M5, Y15, K4.

00:03:05  And I'll increase the Lineweight value

00:03:06  to 16 points, like so.

00:03:09  And again, we need to move this guy back,

00:03:11  so this time I'm just going to press Control X,

00:03:13  or Command X on the Mac, to cut up the shape

00:03:16  and then I'll press the V key

00:03:17  to switch to the black arrow tool

00:03:18  and I'll click on that ring right there

00:03:21  and press Control F, or Command F on the Mac

00:03:24  in order to paste the new shape directly in front of it.

00:03:27  All right, I'm looking for a dotted stroke this time, and I

00:03:30  want a total of 36 dots around the entire circumference

00:03:33  of this circle, so I once again went to the Circumference

00:03:36  Calculator, and I dialed in half of our diameter,

00:03:40  which is 287.5, incidentally,

00:03:44  I just figured that out on the calculator.

00:03:46  And as soon as I hit Calculate,

00:03:48  I get this big value right here,

00:03:49  I'm just going to select everything up

00:03:52  to the first three decimals deep,

00:03:54  and press Control C, or Command C on the Mac

00:03:56  to copy that value.

00:03:58  And then I'll go back to Illustrator,

00:04:00  click on the word Stroke,

00:04:01  go ahead and turn on your Round Cap

00:04:03  and then click on the dash line check box.

00:04:05  You want the Dash to be zero points

00:04:07  and then you want the Gap to be that value

00:04:08  you just copied divided, so slash 36,

00:04:13  and then press the Tab key

00:04:14  and that gives us a Gap value of 50.178.

00:04:18  And it's okay to leave this preserve icon turned on.

00:04:21  After which point just press the Enter key,

00:04:22  or the Return key on the Mac,

00:04:24  then go over here to the Appearance Panel,

00:04:25  click on that Stroke to make it active,

00:04:28  and click on the little page icon at the bottom of the panel

00:04:30  to make a copy of it and then change the color to this guy,

00:04:34  C0, M19, Y54, K8, in order to darken things up.

00:04:40  And now go ahead and reduce the Lineweight value

00:04:42  to just 12 points, like so.

00:04:45  All right, now I want you to add a drop shadow

00:04:46  to these elements so that you can gain access

00:04:49  to this Main Star layer, click in its upper right corner

00:04:52  in order to select all three of the shapes on that layer,

00:04:55  and then I want you to go up to the Effect menu,

00:04:57  choose Stylize, and choose Drop Shadow.

00:05:00  After which point you can enter these values right here,

00:05:02  so we got an Opacity of 75%,

00:05:05  the X offset is negative five,

00:05:06  both the Y Offset and the Blur, are positive five.

00:05:09  If you want to see what that looks like

00:05:10  turn on the Preview check box

00:05:12  and you'll end up with this result right here,

00:05:14  after which point you can click Okay

00:05:16  in order to apply that drop shadow,

00:05:18  and then click off the shapes to deselect them.

00:05:21  And that's how you create the big circle

00:05:23  and ornaments around the star,

00:05:24  as well as how you modify the color of the shape

00:05:27  as you're creating it using the Shape Builder Tool.

00:01:26  we're not actually seeing a change

00:01:28  and that's because we're working

00:01:29  with the shape builder tool.

00:01:31  And so the easiest way to really change that stroke

00:01:33  is to press the v key to switch back to the black arrow tool

00:01:37  at which point you'll see that the stroke is still brown.

00:01:39  And I can now change it to white

00:01:41  just for the sake of demonstration.

00:01:43  But I really don't want it so I'm going to change it to none

00:01:45  Alright, now we want to draw a really big ellipse.

00:01:49  So I'm going to click into the shapes layer

00:01:51  to make it active and turn it back on as well.

00:01:53  And then I'm going to zoom out from my artwork

00:01:55  and I'm going to get the ellipse tool

00:01:57  and as opposed to dragging with it,

00:01:58  I'm just going to click and I'm going to turn off the link

00:02:01  and I'm going to change the width value to 900 points

00:02:04  and I'll take the height value

00:02:05  up to 500 points and click okay

00:02:07  in order to create this gigantic shape right here.

00:02:10  And then I'll go ahead and drag it

00:02:12  up to about this location here.

00:02:15  So notice that it's higher than the center

00:02:17  over here on the left hand side

00:02:18  and it's lower than the center on the right hand side.

00:02:21  So I'm along those lines.

00:02:22  Of course, you can go your own way if you want to.

00:02:24  And then I'll just go ahead and zoom back in

00:02:27  and I'm going to make a copy of this shape

00:02:29  on the inset layer by alt or option dragging

00:02:33  that little square which indicates the selection.

00:03:40  in the bottom left corner of the Swatches panel

00:03:45  and that'll bring up a bunch of groups of colors.

00:04:27  in order to bring up the Ellipse dialog box

00:04:29  and notice that the Width and Height values are the same.

00:04:32  I want them to remain the same, so I'm going to turn on

00:04:34  this link icon right there,

00:04:36  and I'm going to change the Width value to 40 points.

00:04:38  That changes the Height value to 40 points as well,

00:04:40  at which point I'll go ahead and click OK

00:04:42  in order to create that circle.

00:04:44  All right, now I'm going to grab the black arrow tool.

00:04:47  You may know that there's a way to basically rotate

00:04:57  by dragging its centerpoint until it snaps into alignment

00:05:00  with the star point, at which point I'll press the

00:05:02  alt key or the opt key on a Mac in order to create

00:05:05  a duplicate, and then I'll do the same over here,

00:05:08  so I'm constantly dragging by the centerpoint,

00:05:11  and now that I've got these two circles right next to

00:05:13  each other, I'll shift + click on this guy and drag it down

00:05:16  so that I'm duplicating both of those circles

00:05:18  and again, I want to make sure that I'm snapping into

00:05:21  alignment, so I want to see a double white arrowhead,

00:05:24  at which point I'll go ahead and release

00:05:26  and then I'm going to duplicate this guy up here at the top

00:05:29  down here at the bottom, and I'll again press

00:05:32  the alt key or the opt key on a Mac

00:05:33  and make sure that I'm snapping into alignment like so.

00:05:37  And now I'll click off the circle to deselect it

00:05:39  and now I'm going to press ctrl + a or cmd + a on a Mac

00:05:42  to select all of those shapes and I'll go up to the

00:05:45  Window menu and choose Appearance to bring up

00:05:47  the Appearance panel, and I want this Stroke to be in back

00:05:50  of the Fill so I'm just going to go ahead and drag it

00:05:52  and drop it in back of the Fill like so

00:05:55  and then I'll click off the Shapes to deselect them.

00:02:03  and release in order to create a duplicate.

00:02:06  All right, now I'm just going to go ahead

00:02:07  and right click on this shape, choose Arrange

00:02:09  and choose Send to Back

00:02:11  so that it's in the back of the original A,

00:02:13  and I'll change it's color by clicking on the first swatch

00:02:16  up here in the control panel

00:02:17  and selecting this dark blue,

00:02:19  which is R=46 G=49 B=146.

00:02:23  It looks like that.

00:02:24  All right, now I want to add some edges

00:02:26  by first selecting the Line Segment Tool

00:02:28  from the Line Tool fly out menu.

00:02:30  And then I'll drag from here down to here like so.

00:02:33  And because my Smart Guides are turned on,

00:02:35  everything is snapping into place.

00:02:36  And then I'll go ahead and select the Rectangle Tool,

00:02:38  and I will draw a rectangle right here.

00:02:42  And it's going to come in with no fills,

00:02:44  so I'll go ahead and click on its fill swatch

00:02:46  and I will choose that dark shade of blue once again.

00:02:48  And now I'll draw another rectangle here

00:02:50  and another one down here in the bottom right corner.

00:02:53  All right, now I'll switch back to my Black Arrow Tool,

00:02:56  which of course I can get by pressing the V key.

00:02:58  I'll go ahead and marquee all of those shapes,

00:03:00  partially marquee them,

00:03:01  without running into the snowman that is.

00:03:04  And now I'll switch back to my Shape Builder Tool again

00:03:06  and I want you to see that this line right there

00:03:09  serves as a definition.

00:03:10  So I could click right there to divide that shape out

00:03:14  and click again right there to divide it.

00:03:16  And now I'll click at this location

00:03:19  and this one right here, and that's it.

00:03:21  All right, so now I'm going to press the V key

00:03:23  to switch back to my Black Arrow Tool.

00:03:25  And notice this shape right there

00:03:27  that kind of goes in the background?

00:03:29  I'm going to marquee these two shapes.

00:03:31  So the forward part of that A, and that bit of A

00:03:34  in the background.

00:03:35  And then I'm going to shift click on the foreground A

00:03:39  to deselect it, and I'm going to right-click on this object,

00:03:41  choose Arrange and choose Bring to Front

00:03:44  so that we can see it.

00:03:45  And it ends up looking like this,

00:03:47  which is not something we need.

00:03:48  So I'm just going to press the backspace key,

00:03:50  or the delete key on the Mac to get rid of it,

00:03:52  and then I'll just go ahead and click and shift click

00:03:54  on these two halves of the inner portion of the A.

00:03:58  And I'll change the color from light blue

00:04:00  back to the dark blue,

00:04:02  and I want you to see something.

00:04:03  Notice how we've got some bad edges?

00:04:05  Right there, we've got these minor joints

00:04:08  that are not aligning with each other.

00:04:10  It's worse right here, but it's bad up here too,

00:04:12  in the upper right corner.

00:04:14  To get rid of those, just go ahead and zoom out

00:04:17  a little bit, marquee all those shapes

00:04:19  that make up the A again, at least partially marquee them.

00:04:21  And then go up to the Stroke option

00:04:23  here in the control panel and change the corner setting

00:04:26  to Round Join.

00:04:28  And that will go ahead and get rid of those miters,

00:04:30  as we're seeing right here.

00:04:32  And now if I click off the shapes,

00:04:33  you can see that everything aligns nicely.

00:04:36  All right, now I'm going to press ctrl + 0,

00:04:38  or cmd + 0 on the Mac to zoom back out.

00:04:40  All right, now let's finish things off

00:04:41  by making this clover.

00:04:42  I'll go ahead and click on one of the green circles

00:04:45  and shift click on the other two with my Black Arrow Tool.

00:04:48  And then once again, I'll grab the Shape Builder Tool.

00:04:50  And you could just drag all over these circles

00:04:54  if you want to.

00:04:56  But i's possible you might miss an element

00:04:58  like that thing right there.

00:04:59  So the better way to work,

00:05:01  I'll go ahead and undo that change,

00:05:02  is to press and hold the shift key.

00:05:04  At which point, instead of dragging a freeform line,

00:05:07  you'll draw a rectangular marquee instead.

00:05:10  At which point, you can go ahead and partially marquee

00:05:12  all three of those shapes.

00:05:14  And then when you release, notice that the interior

00:05:16  gets filled as well.

00:05:18  Now that trick also works when subtracting shapes.

00:05:21  So what I'm going to do is press the ctrl key

00:05:23  or the cmd key and the Mac in order to get my

00:05:25  Black Arrow Tool on a fly.

00:05:26  I'll go ahead and partially marquee

00:05:28  these sort of beige shapes down here.

00:05:29  And I'll press the alt key, or the opt key on the Mac,

00:05:33  so I see my subtract cursor.

00:05:35  And then I'll add the shift key so I can marquee

00:05:37  these shapes instead.

00:05:39  And then I'll go ahead and shift alt

00:05:41  or shift opt drag over on this side as well,

00:05:44  so that we're left with just that stem.

00:05:46  And then I'm going to press the ctrl key,

00:05:48  or the cmd key on a Mac, to get my Black Arrow Tool,

00:05:51  along with the shift key.

00:05:52  So you want to ctrl + shift + click

00:05:54  on the green portion of the clover.

00:05:57  That's a cmd + shift + click on the Mac,

00:05:58  and then just go ahead and press the shift key

00:06:00  and marquee around though shapes like so

00:06:03  in order to join them all together.

00:06:05  And now I'll go ahead and press the V key

00:06:06  in order to switch to my Black Arrow Tool,

00:06:08  and I'll click off the shape to deselect it.

00:06:11  And that's how you divide shape intersections

00:06:14  just by clicking on them,

00:06:15  as well as draw rectangular marquees

00:06:17  by pressing the shift key.
