00:02:07  a second time to create these rings that are emanating

00:02:11  from the flare effect.

00:02:13  All right, now let's say you want to edit this wacky effect

00:02:15  you've created.

00:02:17  You have one of two options.

00:02:18  Notice your cursor, if you look very carefully,

00:02:21  appears as a kind of cross with some dots around it.

00:02:24  If you move your cursor over the center of that ring

00:02:28  right there, those lines in the cross,

00:02:31  they become tiny, itty-bitty arrows,

00:02:33  which allow you to then move the rings

00:02:35  to a different location.

00:02:37  I know, right?

00:02:38  And then you can do the same thing

00:02:40  at the center of the effect over here, near the star.

00:02:43  And you can drag that to wherever you like.

00:02:46  Not only that, if that's not enough for you,

00:02:48  then I'll just go ahead and move this down a little,

00:02:50  you also have the option of pressing the enter key

00:02:53  as long as the Flare Tool is active,

00:02:55  that's the return key on the Mac,

00:02:57  in order to bring up the Flare Options dialog box.

00:03:00  Now I'm not going to wander through each and every one

00:03:03  of these, but I do want you to have a sense

00:03:05  for what's going on here.

00:03:06  If you change the diameter value,

00:03:08  you're going to increase the size of this halo.

00:03:12  So notice if I take it up to 400 pt, for example,

00:03:15  I'm increasing the halo so that it's exceeding

00:03:18  the edge of the glass, which is, of course,

00:03:21  not what I want so I'll just go ahead and take that

00:03:22  back down to, let's say, 300.

00:03:25  You can also experiment with these other center values

00:03:27  if you like.

00:03:28  The growth value here inside the halo

00:03:30  is going to expand how big the halo gets.

00:03:34  That is, the region between these two circles right here.

00:03:38  I'm going to go ahead and take it down a little bit

00:03:41  so that we have this kind of edge right there,

00:03:44  and you can also change the number of rays if you like.

00:03:47  I think I might be up to the maximum at 50 right there.

00:03:51  Yes, indeed I am.

00:03:52  But I kind of like that effect.

00:03:53  You can turn the rays off if you don't want them like so,

00:03:56  or you can turn the rings off,

00:03:59  which is what I'm going to do.

00:04:01  I really don't want the rings associated with this effect,

00:04:03  and so having done that, I'll just go and click OK

00:04:06  in order to apply that effect.

00:04:09  And I might move this guy up into the right

00:04:11  just a little bit in order to better fill

00:04:14  the magnifying glass.

00:04:16  All right, now if you deselect this effect

00:04:17  by going out to the Select menu and choosing

00:04:20  the Deselect command, or once again,

00:04:22  you can press ctrl + shift + a,

00:04:23  or cmd + shift + a on the Mac,

00:04:25  you'll see that it's kind of leaking out down here

00:04:27  along the bottom left edge of the magnifying glass,

00:04:31  which doesn't really make any sense.

00:04:32  But you can mask that effect.

00:04:35  And again, this is getting a little ahead of ourselves

00:04:38  but I think we should do it if only in the name

00:04:40  of creating quality art.

00:04:42  So what I'm going to do here is I'm going to go over

00:04:44  to the lone star layer, and notice that it has

00:04:46  a triangle next to it,

00:04:48  which means that you can click the triangle

00:04:49  to expand the layer.

00:04:51  At which point, I'm going to go ahead and target right there

00:04:54  by clicking on the circle associated with that red circle

00:04:58  that's located behind the white star.

00:05:00  Now you want to press ctrl + c or cmd + c on the Mac

00:05:04  to copy it.

00:05:05  All right, having done that, just go ahead

00:05:06  and collapse that lone star layer

00:05:09  and then expand the flare layer like so

00:05:12  and go ahead and target the flare

00:05:15  by clicking on its circle,

00:05:17  and that's going to select all that garbage

00:05:19  as you're seeing right there.

00:05:20  At which point, you want to press ctrl + f,

00:05:22  or cmd + f on the Mac,

00:05:24  in order to paste that circle in front of it.

00:05:27  All right, now what you want to do is drop down

00:05:30  to the bottom of the Layers panel once again,

00:05:32  and notice this icon right there,

00:05:34  Make/Release Clipping Mask.

00:05:36  Just go ahead and click on it,

00:05:38  and that will convert that circle that you just pasted

00:05:41  to a mask.

00:05:42  And now, everything about that flare

00:05:45  is contained inside that circle

00:05:48  and no longer leaks into the blue star background.

00:05:51  At which point, you can go ahead and click that triangle

00:05:54  in front of the flare layer to once again collapse it.

00:05:58  And now I'll press ctrl + shift + a, or cmd + shift + a

00:06:00  on the Mac to deselect my artwork.

00:06:03  And just to make sure I don't mess things up any further

00:06:06  using the Flare Tool,

00:06:07  I'll press the V key to switch back to my Black Arrow Tool.

00:06:10  And that's how you use the Flare Tool,

00:06:13  the one shape tool that's actually a special effects tool

 In this movie, we'll go ahead and scale this star

 because, after all, it would be magnified by the glass

  and we'll also add this circular red field.

  And along the way, I'll introduce

  you to the Group Isolation mode.

  Alright, so I'm going to start things off

  by turning off Smart Guides.

  Notice that every time I move my cursor around,

  I'm flashing somewhere, and after a while,

00:00:22  that gets a little irritating,

00:00:23  and besides, because I'm done drawing,

00:00:25  I don't need the Smart Guides anymore.

00:00:27  So I'll go up to the View menu and choose Smart Guides

00:00:30  or, if you want to, you can memorize that keyboard shortcut

00:00:33  of CTRL + U here on the PC or CMD + U on a Mac.

00:00:37  Alright, now I'll go ahead and switch over to our

00:00:39  document at hand and I'll click on the central star

00:00:42  right there and I'll press CTRL + C or CMD + C on a Mac

00:00:45  in order to copy it to the clipboard.

00:00:48  Now I'm going to create a new layer by dropping down

00:00:50  to the little page icon at the bottom of the layers panel,

00:00:54  and I'll ALT + Click on it or OPT + Click on the Mac

00:00:56  in order to bring up the layer options dialogue box.

00:00:59  We'll go ahead and call this new layer "Lone Star"

00:01:02  and I'll change its color to violet and then I'll

00:01:05  click Okay to make that new layer.

00:01:08  Alright, now just go ahead and deselect this star

00:01:10  by going up to the Select menu and choosing the Deselect

00:01:13  command or you have that keyboard shortcut of

00:01:15  CTRL + Shift + A or CMD + Shift + A on the Mac

00:01:20  and the reason we're doing that is, otherwise,

00:01:22  when we choose paste in front, Illustrator

00:01:24  would paste the new star directly in front of the

00:01:27  old star on that star's layer.

00:01:29  We want it to appear on the new layer instead

00:01:31  and to make that happen, click on the Layers Panel

00:01:34  fly out menu icon and make sure

00:01:35  Paste Remembers Layers is turned off.

00:01:38  It is by default. We don't want it on.

00:01:40  It should not have a check mark, in which case,

00:01:42  we could now just go ahead and press CTRL + F

00:01:45  or CMD + F on a Mac in order to paste in front.

00:01:49  And if you see violet-colored points

00:01:51  and segments around your star,

00:01:52  then you know you've done everything exactly right.

00:01:56  Alright, now, I want to fill the star with white,

00:01:58  so I'll go up to this first swatch in the control panel,

00:02:01  click on it and then select white from the swatches list.

00:02:04  And now let's say that you want to scale this star.

00:02:07  Well, one way to scale is to click on the word Transform

00:02:10  to bring up the transform panel, and then,

00:02:13  instead of specifying a width value in points,

00:02:15  go ahead and set this value to something like 130%,

00:02:20  let's say, so you can actually dial in percent.

00:02:23  And then when you press the Tab key, you'll enlarge

00:02:25  the size of your star, and you'll translate that value

00:02:29  back into points here inside the Transform panel,

00:02:32  but that may or may not be

00:02:33  exactly the size you're looking for.

00:02:35  What if you do want an exact size?

00:02:38  You want to make sure that the

00:02:39  point of the stars are tucking all the way

00:02:42  under this rim of the magnifying glass.

00:02:45  In that case, you're better off scaling with a stroke,

00:02:48  and to do that, I'll go ahead and press CTRL + Z

00:02:51  or CMD + Z on the Mac to undo the most recent change.

00:02:54  And I'll click in the second swatch in the control panel

00:02:57  and change the color of the swatch to white,

00:02:59  so that it matches the fill, and then I'll go ahead

00:03:02  and click on this down-pointing arrowhead

00:03:04  and I'll choose, let's say, 10 points for the line weight,

00:03:08  which is good, but obviously not good enough.

00:03:11  And so, to play around here, to get a sense for

00:03:13  how things are working on the fly,

00:03:15  go ahead and click in that line weight value

00:03:17  and then press the Up Arrow key,

00:03:19  and I'm going to press and hold the key

00:03:20  until those points start to come out the other side

00:03:24  of the ring around the magnifying glass.

00:03:27  And then, once I've gotten too far, which I have,

00:03:29  I'll press the Down Arrow key in order to

00:03:31  reduce that stroke value and I ended

00:03:34  up coming up with a line weight value right there

00:03:36  of 36 points, which produces the effects you're

00:03:39  seeing on screen now, in which point I'll press the

00:03:42  Enter key or the Return key on the Mac

00:03:44  in order to apply that change.

00:03:47  Alright now I want to fill the area inside the ring

00:03:49  with red and that means that I need to create a circle

00:03:53  that's the same size as the ring.

00:03:55  And so, what I'd like to do is click

00:03:57  on the circle, not this one, actually.

00:03:59  This is the shadow underneath the ring.

00:04:01  I want this shape right here, I guess, but the problem

00:04:04  is that it's a compound shape that's filled with white

00:04:08  and so that's not going to do me any good.

00:04:10  And so what I need to do is get one of these circles

00:04:14  independently of the other and I can do that.

00:04:17  I can access one of these shapes by entering

00:04:20  the Group Isolation mode, and to do that,

00:04:22  I'll first undo that move and then what you do

00:04:25  is you double click on the selected item,

00:04:28  and that's going to give you this effect here,

00:04:30  where everything but that thing

00:04:32  you double clicked on is dimmed,

00:04:34  and you can't get to it anymore.

00:04:36  You may have already experienced

00:04:37  that as you've been working in Illustrator.

00:04:39  It's very easy to double click on something.

00:04:42  I'll just go ahead and press the Escape key here

00:04:44  to escape out, and notice, I could just go ahead

00:04:46  and click on the star and accidentally double click on it,

00:04:49  and I'm, all of a sudden, in the one star,

00:04:52  it's just a path isolation mode, which is crazy because

00:04:56  there's no reason to isolate a single path,

00:04:58  but it does happen inside Illustrator.

00:05:01  And if this happens to you, and you're sitting

00:05:03  there scratching your head, wondering how to get out,

00:05:06  just press the Escape key and that will take you

00:05:09  back to your artwork, but what we want to do,

00:05:11  I'm just going to close this little tool bar,

00:05:13  by the way, to get rid of it, because

00:05:16  it's going to get in the way in just a moment.

00:05:17  What I want to do is access these two circles

00:05:21  independently, so I'm going to double click

00:05:22  on this ring to enter the Group Isolation mode,

00:05:25  even though we're not working with a group,

00:05:26  we're working with a compound path.

00:05:28  But what it means is I can now click

00:05:29  on this outer circle to select it independently,

00:05:32  like so, or I can click on the inner circle to

00:05:35  select it independently, and that's what I want,

00:05:37  so I'll go ahead and click on the inner circle

00:05:39  and then I'll go up to the Edit menu,

00:05:41  and choose a copy command or, of course,

00:05:43  you can just press CTRL or CMD + C

00:05:45  in order to copy it to the clipboard.

00:05:47  Now notice that we're seeing, essentially,

00:05:49  the path to our current selection.

00:05:51  So, we're sitting here inside the compound path,

00:05:54  which itself is located inside the angled layer,

00:05:57  and so, I could click on that layer in order

00:06:00  to switch back so I just have the layer isolated.

00:06:03  In other words, I can gain access to the entire

00:06:06  magnifying glass, but I can't select any

00:06:08  of the stars in the background

00:06:10  or as I was saying before, if you just want to get

00:06:12  all the way out, you press the escape key,

00:06:15  and that takes you out of the isolation mode.

00:06:18  Alright, now what you want to do is

00:06:19  click on the star in order to select it,

00:06:22  and we, this time, want to put the circle in back of it.

00:06:25  So as opposed to going to the edit menu

00:06:28  and choosing paste in front, we're, this time,

00:06:30  going to choose paste in back,

00:06:32  which is another older school command,

00:06:34  which is why it has such a great keyboard shortcut

00:06:36  of CTRL + B for back or CMD + B on a Mac,

00:06:40  and although we can't really see it,

00:06:42  this white shape is in back of the star,

00:06:44  which will become entirely evident

00:06:46  as soon as we change its fill by clicking on

00:06:48  the first swatch up here in the control panel

00:06:50  and selecting this shade of red,

00:06:52  which is R: 193, G: 39, B: 45,

00:06:56  which ends up producing this effect right here,

00:06:58  at which point, I'll just go ahead

00:07:00  and click off the path in order to deselect it.

00:07:03  And that's how you scale a shape with a stroke as well

00:07:06  as copy a shape that's trapped inside

00:07:08  of a compound path using the Group Isolation mode

so that they stay there as we preview our next move.  And to make that happen, go to the Edit menu  and choose the Copy command,

00:03:54  and then return to the Edit menu and choose Paste in Front.

00:03:57  Again, that's Control C, Control F here on the PC,

00:04:01  Command C, Command F on the Mac.

00:04:04  It doesn't look like anything has happened, but, of course,

00:04:06  we do have new stars right on top of the old ones.

00:04:09  All right, I'll go ahead and press Control Z or Command Z

00:04:11  on the Mac to undo that move.

00:04:13  And I will once again press the Enter key or the Return key

00:04:16  on the Mac to bring up the Move dialog box.

00:04:18  I'm going to move it over to the right-hand side

00:04:19  to get it out of the way, and then I'll click after

00:04:22  the horizontal value and enter "/2"

00:04:24  and you can now see our alternating stars.

00:04:27  They look great, but of course they do need

00:04:29  to move down.

00:04:29  So, click in the vertical value and press Shift Up Arrow

00:04:33  a bunch of times in order to move those starts downward.

00:04:36  And at about 260 points, I think everything

00:04:40  reconciles nicely.

00:04:41  And what I'm looking for is basically equal space

00:04:45  between all of the stars in both rows.

00:04:47  All right.

00:04:48  So, having that, I'll go ahead and click Okay in order

00:04:51  to accept that change.

00:04:52  All right.

00:04:53  Now, I need to move these same stars upward to form

00:04:56  a top column, so I will this time press the Enter key

00:04:59  or the Return key on the Mac to bring up

00:05:01  the Move dialog box.

00:05:02  Change the horizontal value to zero.

00:05:05  And you're going to change the vertical value

00:05:07  not only to -260 points, but you want to multiply that value

00:05:13  So, click after -260 points and enter "*2" like so,

00:05:18  and that will change the vertical value to -520 points,

00:05:22  which produces this effect right here,

00:05:25  which is exactly what we want.

00:05:26  So, go ahead and click on that Copy button in order to copy

00:05:29  those stars.

00:05:30  And then, finally, go ahead and click and Shift-click

00:05:33  on all the stars in this middle row, press the Enter key

00:05:37  or the Return key on the Mac in order to bring up

00:05:39  the Move dialog box.

00:05:40  You can just barely see their points way up there at the top

00:05:43  of the screen, and that's because the vertical value

00:05:45  is negative.

00:05:46  It should be positive this time around.

00:05:48  520 is just fine though, in which case we end up

00:05:52  with this row of stars down here.

00:05:53  Only the top points can be seen, but it's still important
