00:04:29  heads-up display around 285 for the width value,

00:04:35  but I'm having problems getting it.

00:04:36  There it was just for a moment right there.

00:04:39  28523 with a height of 271.27,

00:04:43  but it's pretty hard to get exactly

00:04:45  those values because of all the

00:04:47  smart-guide snapping that's going on,

00:04:50  and so you may prefer to dial in

00:04:57  to delete that star, and I'll just click

00:04:59  at the intersection of these two guidelines

00:05:06  What values do you enter in order

00:05:08  to get a perfect five-pointed star?

00:05:11  Well here's how it works.

00:05:13  You want to go ahead and change

00:05:14  the radius 1 value to 150, that's

00:05:17  just so you and I get the same size star,

00:05:19  and then you change the radius 2 value to 150

00:05:23  as well, in other words that same value,

00:05:24  so whatever size star you end up going with,

00:05:27  go ahead and enter that value again,

00:05:30  and then enter asterisk for times 0.382.

00:05:36  That portion of the formula right there

00:05:37  times 0.382 will give you a perfect

00:05:41  five-pointed star every time,

00:05:43  assuming that your points are set to five,

00:05:46  at which point, go ahead and press the tab key

00:05:48  in order to do the math, and in our case

00:05:51  that's going to translate to a radius 2 value of 57.3 points

00:05:55  and then go ahead and click OK

00:05:57  in order to create that five-pointed star.

00:06:01  And that, my friends, is the formula

00:03:34  up coming up with a line weight value right there

00:03:36  of 36 points, which produces the effects you're

00:03:39  seeing on screen now, in which point I'll press the

00:03:42  Enter key or the Return key on the Mac

00:03:44  in order to apply that change.

00:03:47  Alright now I want to fill the area inside the ring

00:03:49  with red and that means that I need to create a circle

00:03:53  that's the same size as the ring.

00:03:55  And so, what I'd like to do is click

00:03:57  on the circle, not this one, actually.

00:03:59  This is the shadow underneath the ring.

00:04:01  I want this shape right here, I guess, but the problem

00:04:04  is that it's a compound shape that's filled with white

00:04:08  and so that's not going to do me any good.

00:04:10  And so what I need to do is get one of these circles

00:04:14  independently of the other and I can do that.

00:04:17  I can access one of these shapes by entering

00:04:20  the Group Isolation mode, and to do that,

00:04:22  I'll first undo that move and then what you do

00:04:25  is you double click on the selected item,

00:04:28  and that's going to give you this effect here,

00:04:30  where everything but that thing

00:04:32  you double clicked on is dimmed,

00:04:34  and you can't get to it anymore.

00:04:36  You may have already experienced

00:04:37  that as you've been working in Illustrator.

00:04:39  It's very easy to double click on something.

00:04:42  I'll just go ahead and press the Escape key here

00:04:44  to escape out, and notice, I could just go ahead

00:04:46  and click on the star and accidentally double click on it,

00:04:49  and I'm, all of a sudden, in the one star,

00:04:52  it's just a path isolation mode, which is crazy because

00:04:56  there's no reason to isolate a single path,

00:04:58  but it does happen inside Illustrator.

00:05:01  And if this happens to you, and you're sitting

00:05:03  there scratching your head, wondering how to get out,

00:05:06  just press the Escape key and that will take you

00:05:09  back to your artwork, but what we want to do,

00:05:11  I'm just going to close this little tool bar,

00:05:13  by the way, to get rid of it, because

00:05:16  it's going to get in the way in just a moment.

00:05:17  What I want to do is access these two circles

00:05:21  independently, so I'm going to double click

00:05:22  on this ring to enter the Group Isolation mode,

00:05:25  even though we're not working with a group,

00:05:26  we're working with a compound path.

00:05:28  But what it means is I can now click

00:05:29  on this outer circle to select it independently,

00:05:32  like so, or I can click on the inner circle to

00:05:35  select it independently, and that's what I want,

00:05:37  so I'll go ahead and click on the inner circle

00:05:39  and then I'll go up to the Edit menu,

00:05:41  and choose a copy command or, of course,

00:05:43  you can just press CTRL or CMD + C

00:05:45  in order to copy it to the clipboard.

00:05:47  Now notice that we're seeing, essentially,

00:05:49  the path to our current selection.

00:05:51  So, we're sitting here inside the compound path,

00:05:54  which itself is located inside the angled layer,

00:05:57  and so, I could click on that layer in order

00:06:00  to switch back so I just have the layer isolated.

00:06:03  In other words, I can gain access to the entire

00:06:06  magnifying glass, but I can't select any

00:06:08  of the stars in the background

00:06:10  or as I was saying before, if you just want to get

00:06:12  all the way out, you press the escape key,

00:06:15  and that takes you out of the isolation mode.

00:06:18  Alright, now what you want to do is

00:06:19  click on the star in order to select it,

00:06:22  and we, this time, want to put the circle in back of it.

00:06:25  So as opposed to going to the edit menu

00:06:28  and choosing paste in front, we're, this time,

00:06:30  going to choose paste in back,

00:06:32  which is another older school command,

00:06:34  which is why it has such a great keyboard shortcut

00:06:36  of CTRL + B for back or CMD + B on a Mac,

00:06:40  and although we can't really see it,

00:06:42  this white shape is in back of the star,

00:06:44  which will become entirely evident

00:06:46  as soon as we change its fill by clicking on

00:06:48  the first swatch up here in the control panel

00:06:50  and selecting this shade of red,

00:06:52  which is R: 193, G: 39, B: 45,

00:06:56  which ends up producing this effect right here,

00:03:46  For starters here you have a polygon radius value,

00:03:49  and so if I were to change this value to 300 points,

00:03:53  in my case that's gonna grow the polygon.

00:03:55  And by the way, you can think of it as

00:03:58  being a polygon now, that's gonna fit inside of a circle

00:04:02  that has a radius of 300 points,

00:04:05  or if you prefer, a diameter of 600 points.

00:04:09  Another way to scale the shape is with

00:04:11  this polygon side length, and so if I set any side

00:04:14  of the polygon to 300 points, that's gonna make the shape

00:04:17  that much smaller, and it's also going to change

00:04:20  the radius value because these two values

00:04:23  are locked in sync with each other.

00:04:26  But my favorite setting of all is this side count,

00:04:29  and so I can actually change the number of sides

00:04:32  after drawing a rectangle, here inside the latest version

00:04:36  of Illustrator, which is very exciting stuff.

00:04:39  But I want you to see something.

00:04:41  If I take this value down back to five let's say,

00:04:44  and then I change the corner radius value to 36,

00:04:47  so we have these round corners, all of which by the way

00:04:50  are locked into alignment with each other,

00:04:52  and then I change this side count just by clicking in it,

00:04:56  and pressing the up arrow key,

00:04:58  my corners revert to sharp corners as we're seeing here.

00:05:02  So anytime you change the number of sides,

00:05:04  you lose your round corners.

00:05:06  But of course only temporarily, because

00:05:09  you can change them back anytime you like.

00:05:11  Also notice this diamond-shaped control right here.

00:05:14  It allows you to change the number of sides on the fly,

00:05:19  and you can go with as few as three sides,

00:05:21  although you can't really see the heads-up display

00:05:23  'cause the transform panel is in the way,

00:05:25  but let me show you that again.

00:05:27  So as few as three sides, because after all an

00:05:30  equilateral triangle is the simplest kind

00:05:32  of polygon there is.

00:05:33  Up to, these days, 11 sides.

00:05:36  But you can go with more sides than that just by

00:05:38  double-clicking on the round corner widget once again,

00:05:41  and manipulating this sides value.

00:05:44  All right, let's say I take it down to seven,

00:05:46  and here's another exciting tidbit for you.

00:05:49  I'll go ahead and drag one of these corner handles

00:05:52  independently of the other, so I'm not pressing

00:05:55  the Shift key in order to create a proportional re-size,

00:05:58  I'm just dragging the corner handle

00:05:59  by itself to kind of squish the shape.

00:06:02  And if I wanted to do so from the center,

00:06:04  I would go ahead and press the Alt key,

00:06:06  or the Opt key on the Mac, and I can even go ahead

00:06:10  and rotate that shape to some other angle, and yet

00:06:13  as we can see on the far-left side of the control panel,

00:06:16  Illustrator still recognizes it as a live polygon.

00:06:20  And so we can change the number of sides,

00:06:22  as well as adjust the corner roundness and so forth,

00:06:25  and we now have one additional option

00:06:27  in the form of this button, Make Sides Equal.

00:06:31  And if you click on that, you are going to restore

00:06:34  your regular polygon, at which point I could Shift + Alt,

00:06:37  or Shift + Opt drag a corner handle

00:06:40  in order to scale the shape proportionally

00:06:42  with respect to its center.

00:06:44  But bear in mind, all of these controls only show up

00:06:47  when you're seeing the bounding box, so

00:06:49  if you don't want them, just go ahead and choose

00:06:51  Hide Bounding Box, and all that folderol will disappear.

00:06:55  And that's how you take advantage of live polygons

00:03:04  If you press the Enter key or the Return key on the Mac,

00:03:07  we're going to repeat the last move, so that's why

00:03:09  we're seeing the star move over to this right-hand area.

00:03:12  What we really want to do is move it half that distance.

00:03:16  So, go ahead and click after the horizontal value

00:03:19  and enter "/2" in order to move the stars

00:03:22  just 180 points.

00:03:24  And then, we need to set the vertical value

00:03:26  to 300 points or something to move them down.

00:03:30  I don't know.

00:03:31  And that's because, unfortunately, we can't see

00:03:34  the original stars at the same time, which prevents us

00:03:37  from making a very good decision.

00:03:40  So, what I'm going to recommend you do is just cancel

00:03:42  out of here.

00:03:43  And instead of copying these stars on the fly,

00:03:46  let's copy them and paste them in front

00:03:48  so that they stay there as we preview our next move.

00:03:51  And to make that happen, go to the Edit menu

00:03:53  and choose the Copy command,

00:03:54  and then return to the Edit menu and choose Paste in Front.

00:03:57  Again, that's Control C, Control F here on the PC,

00:04:01  Command C, Command F on the Mac.

00:04:04  It doesn't look like anything has happened, but, of course,

00:04:06  we do have new stars right on top of the old ones.

00:04:09  All right, I'll go ahead and press Control Z or Command Z

00:04:11  on the Mac to undo that move.

00:04:13  And I will once again press the Enter key or the Return key

00:04:16  on the Mac to bring up the Move dialog box.

00:04:18  I'm going to move it over to the right-hand side

00:04:19  to get it out of the way, and then I'll click after

00:04:22  the horizontal value and enter "/2"

00:04:24  and you can now see our alternating stars.

00:04:27  They look great, but of course they do need

00:04:29  to move down.

00:04:29  So, click in the vertical value and press Shift Up Arrow

00:04:33  a bunch of times in order to move those starts downward.

00:04:36  And at about 260 points, I think everything

00:04:40  reconciles nicely.

00:04:41  And what I'm looking for is basically equal space

00:04:45  between all of the stars in both rows.

00:04:47  All right.

00:04:48  So, having that, I'll go ahead and click Okay in order

00:04:51  to accept that change.

00:04:52  All right.

00:04:53  Now, I need to move these same stars upward to form

00:04:56  a top column, so I will this time press the Enter key

00:04:59  or the Return key on the Mac to bring up

00:05:01  the Move dialog box.

00:05:02  Change the horizontal value to zero.

00:05:05  And you're going to change the vertical value

00:05:07  not only to -260 points, but you want to multiply that value

00:05:12  times two.

00:05:13  So, click after -260 points and enter "*2" like so,

00:05:18  and that will change the vertical value to -520 points,

00:05:22  which produces this effect right here,

00:05:25  which is exactly what we want.

00:05:26  So, go ahead and click on that Copy button in order to copy

00:05:29  those stars.

00:05:30  And then, finally, go ahead and click and Shift-click

00:05:33  on all the stars in this middle row, press the Enter key

00:05:37  or the Return key on the Mac in order to bring up

00:05:39  the Move dialog box.

00:05:40  You can just barely see their points way up there at the top

00:05:43  of the screen, and that's because the vertical value

00:05:45  is negative.

00:05:46  It should be positive this time around.

00:05:48  520 is just fine though, in which case we end up

00:05:52  with this row of stars down here.

00:05:53  Only the top points can be seen, but it's still important

00:05:56  we do it, and that's why I want you to click the Copy button

00:05:59  in order to create a copy of those stars like so.

00:06:02  And now, I'm going to click off the stars to deselect them,

00:06:05  and I'll press Control 0 or Command 0 on the Mac

00:06:08  in order to fit the document onscreen.

00:06:10  And that's how you repeat the stars and alternating

00:06:13  equally spaced rows using a combination

00:06:16  of the Move dialog box and the Paste in Front command

00:03:26  return to the free-form orientation.

00:03:28  You can also press the spacebar

00:03:31  in order to move that shape on the fly.

00:03:33  If you want to add more points to your star,

00:03:35  then you press the up-arrow key.

00:03:37  If you want to reduce the number of points,

00:03:39  then you can press the down-arrow key

00:03:41  all the way down to a kind of misshapen triangle.

00:03:44  All right, I'm going to go ahead

00:03:45  and press the up-arrow key a couple of times

00:03:47  until we get back to the five-pointed star.

00:03:49  You can change how pointy the points are

00:03:53  by pressing and holding the control key,

00:03:55  so notice if I make the shape nice and big,

00:03:58  and then I press the control key,

00:03:59  or the command key on the Mac, and drag inward,

00:04:02  then I'm going to make the points less pointy,

00:04:05  and finally I'm going to move them inward,

00:04:07  so they're no long points at all.

00:04:09  They're the inside edges of that shape.

00:04:12  Or I can go ahead and drag way out here like so,

00:04:16  and now go ahead and make the star smaller,

00:04:18  and then I'll press and hold the control key,

00:04:20  or the command key on the Mac again,

00:04:22  and drag out in order to make

00:04:24  the shape very spiky indeed.

00:04:27  And your final option is to press

00:04:29  and hold the alt key.

00:04:31  Whenever you press the alt key

00:04:33  or the option key on a Mac, you're going to

00:04:35  align the opposite sides.

00:04:37  So in the case of a five-pointed star

00:04:39  you're going to get the classic American Flag star.

00:04:42  If we're working with a six-pointed star,

00:04:45  which I achieve just by pressing the up-arrow key,

00:04:47  and that went ahead and reset the star as well.

00:04:50  If I now press the alt key or the option key on a Mac,

00:04:53  I get a Star of David.

00:04:55  And so that's how it works regardless

00:04:56  of how many points your star may have,

00:04:59  and to keep those opposite sides aligned

00:05:01  just make sure that you keep the

00:05:03  alt or option key down until the end of your drag.

00:05:07  And then, finally, you can click with

00:05:09  the Star tool in order to bring up

00:05:11  the Star dialogue box.

00:05:12  This one's a little harder to envision,

00:05:14  but we basically have an outside radius

00:05:17  and an inside radius of points,

00:05:20  and sadly we don't have a preview,

00:05:22  so you're just going to have to wing it,

00:05:24  but notice that you can set the

00:05:25  values to anything you want.

00:05:26  Right now radius 1 is larger than radius 2,

00:05:29  but I can change that if I want to.

00:05:31  I can set radius 1 to 100 points,

00:05:34  and I can set radius 2 to 200 points,

00:05:36  and I might take the number of

00:05:38  star points down to 5, and then I'll click OK

00:05:42  in order to create that star.

00:05:44  And now I'll press the control key

00:05:45  or the command key on a Mac to access

00:05:47  my black-arrow tool on the fly,

00:05:49  and I'll drag that shape a little bit over

00:05:51  so that we can see both of the stars

00:05:53  at the same time, and that's how you work

00:05:56  with the Polygon and Star tools

00:05:58  here inside Illustrator.
