00:00:38  But notice when I release the mouse button

00:00:41  that I end up getting a small equilateral triangle.

00:00:45  So every time you create a triangle with this tool,

00:00:48  all three segments are the same length.

00:00:51  Alright now I'll go ahead and click on the triangle

00:00:52  to select it,

00:00:54  and notice that it is a smart polygon,

00:00:56  as indicated by the word polygon over here

00:00:58  on the far right side of the Control Panel,

00:01:00  which means that I can drag this Plus-Minus widget

00:01:03  in order to add or delete sides.

00:01:06  Of course, I still want three sides,

00:01:08  so I'll leave that alone.

00:01:10  We also have this accurate center point,

00:01:12  which is located equidistant

00:01:14  from each one of the sides.

00:01:16  We'll see how that changes in just a moment.

00:01:19  So I'm gonna go ahead and drag this guy

00:01:21  all the way over

00:01:23  to some place along the far left side of the document,

00:01:25  and now I'm gonna stretch it by dragging

00:01:28  the bottom right handle

00:01:29  all the way until the shape is more or less centered

00:01:32  as I can see right here.

00:01:34  But notice that the shape is expanded,

00:01:36  so it's now a static path outline,

00:01:38  as indicated by the word Path

00:01:40  on the far left side of the Control Panel,

00:01:42  and we have a less accurate center point,

00:01:44  it's too high as you can see here,

00:01:46  because it now represents the center

00:01:48  of the bounding box,

00:01:49  but it does match the center of the width of the shape.

00:01:52  So everything's good.

00:01:54  Alright now I'll go ahead and draw a chimney

00:01:56  as another rectangle right there.

00:01:59  Now let's say I wanna go ahead and combine these paths.

00:02:02  You do that by making sure the paths

00:02:04  are deselected, as we're seeing right here,

00:02:06  that's very important.

00:02:07  And then you wanna draw a zigzag

00:02:09  inside of your path outlines.

00:02:13  So notice if I just draw a zigzag like so,

00:02:16  then I'm gonna combine the chimney

00:02:18  along with the roof in order to create

00:02:21  this effect here.

00:02:23  I'm gonna undo that however,

00:02:25  so that I can show you a few other options,

00:02:27  and I'll do that of course

00:02:28  by pressing CTRL+Z,

00:02:29  or Command + Z on a Mac.

00:02:30  If you end up starting your drag outside the boundary

00:02:33  of the path outline, like so,

00:02:35  and then dragging in,

00:02:37  then you're going to delete the shape

00:02:39  rather than add it.

00:02:41  So you wanna make sure

00:02:42  when you're adding shapes together,

00:02:43  that you go ahead and start your drag

00:02:46  inside the path outline like so,

00:02:48  and stay inside the path as well,

00:02:50  and you wanna make sure that you scribble

00:02:52  out into the other path that you want to combine.

00:02:55  Now you can scribble all over the place

00:02:57  if you like, but you don't have to.

00:02:59  All you need to do is make sure

00:03:01  you're creating a letter Z,

00:03:03  and let me show you what that looks like.

00:03:05  I'll go ahead and undo the combination

00:03:07  of those paths again,

00:03:08  and I will start inside here,

00:03:10  so you need to drag down in this case,

00:03:12  then back, and then like so,

00:03:15  in order to draw a Z,

00:03:17  so you just need three back and forths on your zigzag.

00:03:20  And then I can just go ahead and drag this guy

00:03:23  all the way down to here,

00:03:25  and that'll combine all three of my paths into one.

00:03:29  Alright now let's say that you wanna change the color

00:03:31  of the paths, because after all,

00:03:32  the shaper tool always gives you these light gray fills.

00:03:35  Why then, just go ahead and click on the path outline

00:03:38  to select it, and you'll see your outline light up.

00:03:40  In my case it's appearing red,

00:03:42  because I'm working on a red layer.

00:03:45  I am not seeing any anchor points or handles

00:03:47  and that's because you cannot modify anchor points

00:03:50  using this tool.

00:03:51  If that bothers you,

00:03:53  then you can go up to the View menu

00:03:54  and choose Show Bounding Box

00:03:56  in order to see a big bounding box surrounding the shape,

00:03:59  so that you know for sure that it's selected.

00:04:02  I don't want that however,

00:04:03  so I'm gonna turn the bounding box off

00:04:05  by choosing the Hide Bounding Box command.

00:04:08  And now at this point, I can go up to the Fill Swatch,

00:04:10  this first swatch up here in the Control Panel,

00:04:13  and I can change it to, let's say,

00:04:15  this light shade of green right there.

00:04:17  And I'll also increase the line weight value

00:04:20  to 6 points, in order to produce this effect.

00:04:24  Alright, now I'm gonna add a door,

00:04:25  and incidentally, there's no rule that says you have to

00:04:28  draw your shapes with the shaper tool.

00:04:30  And so, for example, I can go ahead and create the door

00:04:33  as a rectangle using the Rectangle Tool,

00:04:36  and now I'll just go ahead and draw a door

00:04:38  that looks something like this, let's say,

00:04:41  so that it's centerpoint is centered

00:04:44  on that vertical guideline,

00:04:46  and I'll go ahead and release, and now,

00:04:47  I'll get rid of that little extra edge

00:04:49  down there at the bottom of the door,

00:04:51  by switching to the Shaper Tool,

00:04:53  and then you wanna click off the shape to deselect it,

00:04:56  because notice what happens if I start dragging

00:04:58  on this guide while it's selected,

00:05:00  it's very possible I'm gonna get rid of it

00:05:02  or something else is gonna go wrong.

00:05:04  That's not what I want, so,

00:05:06  I'll go ahead and undo that and click off the shape

00:05:08  to deselect it, and then, I'll just go ahead and drag

00:05:11  into the shape, so I'm crossing the boundary,

00:05:13  I'm not crossing all the way into the house, like that,

00:05:16  because if I did that, then I would subtract the door

00:05:18  as a hole in the house, that's not what I want,

00:05:21  so I'll just go ahead and press CTRL + Z,

00:05:23  Command + Z on a Mac,

00:05:24  and I will drag in and along the edge,

00:05:27  just right there, notice I've got another letter Z,

00:05:29  albeit at an angle, and then I'll release,

00:05:32  and that goes ahead and subtracts away that area.

00:05:35  Now what I wanna do is color that door differently,

00:05:37  and so I'm gonna click on it to select the entire

00:05:39  shaper group, and by the way,

00:05:42  you can tell it's a shaper group,

00:05:43  a special new group inside Illustrator,

00:05:45  because of the words "Shaper Group"

00:05:47  on the far left side of the Control Panel.

00:05:49  And then, I will click once again,

00:05:51  in order to isolate this region.

00:05:53  And that little dot pattern is showing you

00:05:55  that you now have the option of changing the color

00:05:58  of that region just by going up to the Fill Swatch,

00:06:01  once again, and changing it to what ever you like.

00:06:03  I'm gonna go with this light shade of orange,

00:06:06  in order to recolor the door like so.

00:06:09  And here's where things get exciting.

00:06:11  I'll just go ahead and press the Escape key

00:06:13  in order to hide that panel.

00:06:14  Let's say you wanna modify any one of these shapes.

00:06:17  Then just go ahead and double-click on it,

00:06:20  in order to select that shape.

00:06:22  So that's a double-click,

00:06:24  that will give you access, in our case,

00:06:25  to this rectangle,

00:06:27  at which point I can go ahead and change it's size

00:06:29  by dragging on one of these handles,

00:06:31  or I can move it to a different location.

00:06:34  And so what we have here is a dynamic

00:06:36  combination of paths, so you can change the paths around

00:06:39  as much as you like.

00:06:41  You can even drag the thing way out there, like so,

00:06:44  if you do though and then you drag it back in,

00:06:46  you're gonna mess things up.

00:06:47  So I'll just go ahead and press CTRL + Z a couple times

00:06:49  in order to undo that change.

00:06:51  And so for example, if I decide the door is too tall,

00:06:53  I can now just click on it,

00:06:55  because I'm in the Shape Editing Mode,

00:06:57  and I could reduce it's height, like so,

00:07:01  in order to get a shorter door,

00:07:02  I could make it narrower

00:07:04  by dragging one of these side handles

00:07:06  and pressing the ALT key,

00:07:07  or the Option key on a Mac,

00:07:09  so that I'm scaling both sides inward

00:07:11  with respect to the center.

00:07:13  And in my case, I really want it to be a little taller,

00:07:15  so I'm gonna drag the top up, like so,

00:07:18  and then when you're done,

00:07:19  just click off the path outline

00:07:21  to deselect it.

00:07:23  And that, friends, is how you dynamically combine paths

00:07:26  using the Shaper Tool.

00:07:28  And in the next movie,

00:07:29  I'll show you how to subtract paths

00:07:30  in order to create holes.
