Mac
Make.
00:02:22 and what I want to do instead
00:02:23 is create that little bit of a shadow ledge
00:02:26 that I was showing you in the final graphic.
00:02:28 And I want to make sure this time
00:02:30 that I can exactly align this new circle that
00:02:34 I'm about to draw with the old one.
00:02:37 And so I'm going to add a custom guide
00:02:39 by clicking on the Guides layer to make it active,
00:02:41 and then I'll go ahead and select
00:02:43 the Line Segment Tool, from the Line Tool flyout menu.
00:02:46 And I'll drag from the intersection of these
00:02:48 two guidelines right there, down into the right
00:02:51 while pressing the Shift key
00:02:53 until I reach the bleed, as I've done right here.
00:02:56 And I'm pressing the Shift key, by the way,
00:02:58 so I can constrain the angle of this line
00:03:00 to exactly 45 degrees.
00:03:02 And if you're not clear on where I'm going with this,
00:03:05 I'll reveal the method behind my madness
00:03:07 in just a moment.
00:03:08 All right, now I want to convert that line to a guide
00:03:10 by going up to the View menu, choosing Guides,
00:03:13 and then choosing Make Guides.
00:03:15 And I now have a custom guide at 45 degrees.
00:03:18 All right, now I'm going to click
00:03:19 on the Drawing layer to make it active once again,
00:03:21 and I'll select the Ellipse Tool
00:03:23 and I'm going to drag from the intersection
00:03:25 of this inner circle,
00:03:27 and this diagonal guideline.
00:03:28 So this point right there,
00:03:30 and I'm going to drag up and out,
00:03:32 and because the standard behavior
00:03:33 is to create the ellipse inside of a
00:03:35 rectangular bounding box,
00:03:37 I am not getting any sort of alignment at all.
00:03:39 But if I press and hold the Control key,
00:03:41 or the Command key on the Mac,
00:03:43 during my drag, not before,
00:03:45 because that would give you the black arrow tool,
00:03:47 then I'll go ahead and create the ellipse
00:03:48 from that exact point.
00:03:50 The problem is I can't see the size of my ellipse
00:03:53 as I'm drawing it,
00:03:54 I don't have that heads up display,
00:03:55 and that's because I turned off Smart Guides.
00:03:58 So I'll go ahead and undo the
00:03:59 creation of that ellipse and go up to the View menu
00:04:01 and turn Smart Guides back on.
00:04:04 And now I'll reattempt that maneuver
00:04:06 by dragging from the intersection of that inner circle
00:04:09 and the diagonal guideline,
00:04:10 and then pressing and holding the Control key,
00:04:13 or the Command key on the Mac,
00:04:14 in order to align that edge right there to that circle.
00:04:19 And then also press the Shift key as I drag
00:04:22 so that I'm drawing a perfect circle, like so.
00:04:24 And I want it to be as close to 402 points as possible.
00:04:29 Looks like 401.58 points
00:04:31 is about the best I'm going to do,
00:04:33 at which point I'll go ahead and release
00:04:35 in order to create that circle, like so.
00:04:39 And be sure if you're following along with me
00:04:40 to release the mouse button
00:04:42 before you release the Control and Shift,
00:04:44 or Command and Shift keys.
00:04:46 All right, now what you want to do
00:04:47 is switch back to the black arrow tool,
00:04:49 which of course you can get by pressing the V key,
00:04:51 and I want you to click on this circle right there,
00:04:54 the inner circle, because we're going to be using it twice.
00:04:58 And so anytime you want to use the shape twice
00:05:00 you need to copy it before you put it in play.
00:05:02 And so with that shape selected,
00:05:04 I'll go up to the Edit menu
00:05:05 and choose the Copy command.
00:05:07 Or you can press Control C,
00:05:08 or Command C on the Mac.
00:05:10 All right, now I'm going to Shift click on the circle I just
00:05:13 created, and I'm going to fill both these circles with Black
00:05:16 by clicking on this first swatch
00:05:18 on the left hand side of the Control Panel,
00:05:20 and choosing Black.
00:05:22 And now of course I want the inner circle
00:05:24 to cut a hole in the relatively outer circle.
00:05:27 And so I'll go up to the Object menu,
00:05:29 choose Compound Path, and choose Make,
00:05:31 and the deed is done.
00:05:33 The thing is I also want this outer circle,
00:05:36 this guy right here,
00:05:37 to have its inner circle cut out of it.
00:05:40 So I'm going to go ahead and press Control Z,
00:05:42 or Command Z to undo that absurd move,
00:05:45 and i'll paste that shape that I just copied
00:05:46 by going to the Edit menu and choosing Paste in Front,
00:05:49 it's very important you choose Paste in Front,
00:05:51 by the way, as opposed to Paste,
00:05:52 because Paste is just going to paste
00:05:54 the shape any old place.
00:05:56 Whereas Paste in Front is going to put it
00:05:57 right back where Illustrator found it.
00:05:59 And of course you can also execute that command by
00:06:01 pressing Control F, or Command F on the Mac.
00:06:04 All right, now go ahead and Shift click
00:06:06 on that outermost circle, go up to the Fill swatch,
00:06:11 on the far left side of the Control Panel,
00:06:12 change the Fill to White this time,
00:06:15 which isn't going to cover up anything, by the way,
00:06:17 because we pasted the shape in front
00:06:20 of the outermost one, so this Black ring right here
00:06:22 is still at the front of the stack.
00:06:24 And so now I'll go up to the Object menu,
00:06:26 choose Compound Path, and choose Make,
00:06:30 in order to combine those two shapes together.
00:06:32 And just to confirm that we have
00:06:34 what I said we would have,
00:06:36 I'll go ahead and drag these paths out into the paste board,
00:06:39 and you can see that we now have a White ring
00:06:41 with the innermost circle
00:06:43 cutting a hole in the outermost one.
00:06:45 And having proven that I'll just go ahead
00:06:47 and press Control Z, or Command Z on the Mac
00:06:49 in order to put those shapes back where they belong.
00:06:53 And that's how you create compound paths
00:06:54 which allow one path to cut a hole through another
00:06:58 here inside Illustrator.
