00:01:01 first thing I'm going to do is esc out of there
00:01:03 and then press ctrl + z, or cmd + z on a Mac,
00:01:06 to undo the creation of that layer.
00:01:08 Then I will once again drop down
00:01:09 to the little page icon,
00:01:11 and I will alt or opt + click on it
00:01:13 to force the display
00:01:15 of the layer options dialog box.
00:01:17 So once again,
00:01:18 that's an alt + click or an opt + click
00:01:20 on a Mac.
00:01:21 And now I'll just go ahead and call this layer,
00:01:23 lines and click OK
00:01:25 in order to create my new lines layer.
00:01:27 Next, if you're working along with me,
00:01:29 go up to the View menu
00:01:30 and make sure Smart Guides is turned on.
00:01:33 So if it's got a check mark in front of it that's just fine,
00:01:35 if it doesn't then go ahead and choose the command,
00:01:39 and then you want to select the Line Segment Tool
00:01:41 which you'll find directly underneath the Type tool
00:01:43 in the single column tool box,
00:01:46 if you're not seeing it
00:01:47 just go ahead and click and hold
00:01:48 on whatever tool you do see
00:01:50 and then select the Line Segment Tool
00:01:52 from the top of the fly-out menu.
00:01:54 Notice that it has a keyboard shortcut
00:01:55 which is a backward version of the Tools icon.
00:01:59 So in other words,
00:01:59 you can press the \ key
00:02:01 to select the Line Segment Tool.
00:02:02 You'll also have the option
00:02:04 of releasing on this vertical bar
00:02:06 in order to create an independent mini tool box
00:02:10 that contains just those line tools
00:02:12 that we saw in the fly-out menu.
00:02:14 All right, assuming that your Line Segment Tool
00:02:16 is selected, just go ahead and drag
00:02:18 someplace inside the document window,
00:02:21 and because we have Smart Guides turned on
00:02:23 you're going to see a heads up display.
00:02:25 The D value stands for distance
00:02:27 and it represents the length of the line,
00:02:29 and we're also seeing an angle value
00:02:31 that tells us the angle,
00:02:33 and of course both of these values
00:02:34 are going to change on the fly.
00:02:36 Once you get the effect you want
00:02:38 just go ahead and release the mouse button
00:02:40 in order to create that straight line.
00:02:43 Now notice these two swatches
00:02:44 up here at the beginning of the control panel
00:02:46 over here on the left-hand side,
00:02:48 the first one indicates the fill,
00:02:51 and the fill is the color inside of a shape.
00:02:53 A straight line, however, has no inside
00:02:56 and so it's generally best to make sure
00:02:58 the fill is set to none,
00:03:00 as indicated by this white box
00:03:02 with a red slash through it.
00:03:04 If you're seeing some other color
00:03:05 just go ahead and click on a swatch,
00:03:07 and select this very first swatch
00:03:09 in the upper-left corner of the pop-up panel.
00:03:11 Next, we see the color of the stroke
00:03:16 as we'll see in more detail
00:03:18 over the course of these chapters, and third, we have this line weight value which represents the thickness of the stroke, and so just so I can see things a little better on screen, I'm going to click this down pointing arrow head and I'm going to choose 8pt in order to thicken up that line. All right, so obviously drawing a straight line is pretty easy work inside of Illustrator, but you do have a few more options that are available to you. For one thing, I'll go ahead and start dragging at the intersection of these two guide lines. Rather than dragging from one end point to the other, you can draw from the center-outward, by pressing and holding the alt key or the opt key on a Mac and now you can see that that line is centered at the intersection of those two guides, but you've got to keep the alt key down, that is to say the opt key on a Mac, because if you release at any point as you're drawing then you're going to go back to your standard drawing method, that is to say that you're going to start at one end point and end at another, but because I do want to go from the center-out, I'll keep my alt key down, again that's the opt key on a Mac. You could also constrain the angle of your lineby first dragging with the Line Segment Tool, and then pressing and holding the shift key, and because my shift key is down, the angle value as you can see here, goes from 0° to 45°, to 90°, to 135 and so forth. So in other words, pressing and holding the shift key constrains the angle of the line to a multiple of 45°, which includes of course
vertical and horizontal lines as well, but again you've got to keep that shift key down, if you release the shift key the constraint is going to go away. So because I want an absolutely horizontal line let's say, I'm going to keep that shift key down 00:04:5dimensions, and again that's just a click with the tool and let's say I want the lengths to be 300pt, I can just enter that in there or I could enter something like 2.5"" in order to create a 2½ inch line and then that way, as soon as I press the Tab key, Illustrator automatically converts the inches to pt. Now I'll enter an angle value of let's say, 45° and I'll click OK in order to create a line by the numbers like so. Now if you're working with the most recent version of Illustrator, which started shipping at the end of November of 2015, then you have a few additional options as well. Notice if you move your cursor over one of these points right here you're going to get a little arrow-head which tells you that you can drag these points in order to manipulate them, like so, and if you drag while pressing the alt key or the opt key on the Mac, then you're going to expand or contract the line with respect to the center point, as we're seeing right here. You also have the option of moving the line to a different location, which you do by hovering your cursor not over the line itself, but rather over that center point right there at which point, once again your cursor will change to an arrow-head, this time with a little circle next to it which tells you, you can drag the entire line to a new location, and then one more thing you could do just so you know all your options, you can hover your cursor very close to an end point, not quite on it, at which point you'll get this rotate cursor, and then if you drag, you're going to once again rotate the line around its center without changing its length, so it's just a straight ahead rotation, and those my friends, are the many ways to use the Line Segment Tool here inside the most recent version of Illustrator CC
