00:01:47 And then I'll just go ahead and enter
00:01:50 the first letter of my last name,
00:01:52 and I'll add a couple of Cs as well,
00:01:54 as you're seeing me do here.
00:01:56 And the real point of the matter is not that
00:01:57 I can spell my name weirdly, but rather
00:01:59 that I am varying the thickness of my brush strokes.
00:02:03 And now I'll just go ahead and add an ampersand
00:02:05 at this point, and a couple of additional lines as well.
00:02:09 And now I'll go ahead and draw
00:02:10 the first letter of my first name,
00:02:12 along with a kind of modified K,
00:02:15 and then a couple of Es inside of it, like so.
00:02:19 And next, I'll press Ctrl + Shift + A
00:02:21 or Cmd + Shift + A on a Mac to deselect my artwork.
00:02:24 And I'll click on the colors layer to make it active.
00:02:27 And then I'll click on the Fill Swatch,
00:02:28 the very first swatch up here in the Control Panel,
00:02:31 and I'll change it to this light shade of green,
00:02:33 which for what it's worth, is R:140 G:198: B:63.
00:02:38 And then I'll press the Enter key,
00:02:39 or the Return key on a Mac to accept that change.
00:02:42 And now I'll just go ahead and paint inside of here.
00:02:45 And even though I'm being pretty sloppy about it,
00:02:48 just because I don't want to waste too much of your time,
00:02:51 I do have the option of painting into the corners,
00:02:54 if I'm a little more careful.
00:02:56 Because I can vary that pressure on the fly.
00:02:59 And now, I'll paint this light green,
00:03:01 lets say, into each of the Cs, and if you see something
00:03:05 like that right there where I'm pointing my cursor.
00:03:07 That little cluster of anchor points
00:03:09 shows me that I have a hole.
00:03:10 And now I'll go ahead and paint down here, lets say.
00:03:14 And then I'm going to paint inside
00:03:16 the E with this light green as well.
00:03:18 And I'll paint right there and right there
00:03:21 inside the ampersand, just for fun.
00:03:24 And this guy needs a little bit of work.
00:03:25 So I'll Ctrl + click, or Cmd + click on him, on a Mac,
00:03:28 and paint that in like so.
00:03:30 And now I'll go ahead and press Ctrl + Shift + A,
00:03:32 or Cmd + Shift + A on a Mac to deselect my artwork.
00:03:35 And I'll click on the Fill Swatch again,
00:03:37 and select this darker green, R:0 G:146 B:69.
00:03:41 And I'll press the Esc key, to go ahead and hide that panel.
00:03:44 And then I'm going to paint into
00:03:47 this region of the E right there, like so.
00:03:51 And I'm going to paint into this region as well.
00:03:55 And I kind of made a mess of that first guy.
00:03:57 Actually, this guy is not that great either.
00:03:59 So I'll go ahead and paint a little more into it.
00:04:01 And then I'll Ctrl + click, or Cmd + click
00:04:03 on this first path, and I'll paint into it a little bit too.
00:04:06 And then I'm going to switch to the Eraser Tool.
00:04:08 Which, nowadays I can get by pressing the E key.
00:04:11 It supports pressure as well, so all I have to do,
00:04:13 if I want to erase withe pressure sensitivity,
00:04:16 is press the Enter key, or the Return key on a Mac,
00:04:19 and then I'm going to change
00:04:20 the Roundness value back to 100%.
00:04:23 I'm going to set the Size value to lets say,
00:04:25 the same value, 24.
00:04:27 I'm going to change Fixed right here to Pressure,
00:04:30 and I'm going to take the Variation value
00:04:31 as high as it goes, which is 24 pt,
00:04:33 the same as the Size value.
00:04:35 And then I'll click OK.
00:04:37 And now I'll just go ahead and erase with pressure.
00:04:40 Notice the fine tune control that I have here,
00:04:43 on the edge of that path outline,
00:04:45 and I'll do the same right here as well.
00:04:47 And I'm only affecting the selected shape of course.
00:04:50 And now I'll press Ctrl + Shift + A,
00:04:52 or Cmd + Shift + A on a Mac to deselect that path,
00:04:54 and I'll switch to my Blob Brush,
00:04:56 and I'll go ahead and paint with
00:04:58 the dark green up in this area.
00:05:00 Maybe I'll try to be a little more careful this time.
00:05:03 And then I'll paint down here as well.
00:05:07 And you know what, if I want to get better results,
00:05:09 then it would perhaps be useful to me,
00:05:12 to change the Fidelity setting.
00:05:14 So I'll press the Enter key, or the Return key on a Mac,
00:05:17 and I'll move the slider in the direction of Accurate.
00:05:20 And then I'll click OK.
00:05:22 And that way I'll get less rounding out of the tool,
00:05:25 as I paint inside of these regions right here,
00:05:29 including between the two letter Cs, lets say.
00:05:33 And so this is just the effect I came up with.
00:05:35 You will obviously want to go your way,
00:05:37 as opposed to spelling my name, I would imagine.
00:05:40 And now, press Ctrl + Shift + A,
00:05:41 or Cmd + Shift + A on a Mac, to deselect my artwork.
00:05:44 And you can see that we have a series
00:05:46 of variable weight path outlines.
00:05:48 And what' so great about this,
00:05:50 is that you can go very nuts indeed.
00:05:53 I'm not going to paint this for you right now,
00:05:55 but this is something that I painted in advance,
00:05:58 using a drawing tablet, specifically a Wacom Intuous,
00:06:03 along with the pressure sensitive stylus.
00:06:05 And you can see, if I go ahead and turn
00:06:07 these layers off right there,
00:06:08 that I started with this tracing template
00:06:10 and this happens to be a photograph
00:06:12 from the Fotolia image library,
00:06:14 about which you can learn more, and get deals
00:06:16 at fotolia.com/deke.
00:06:19 And then, I've got all this brush work up at the top here.
00:06:22 I have this layer of yellow elements.
00:06:24 So you can see, I'm trying to keep
00:06:25 my different colors on different layers.
00:06:28 And then finally, this just white layer
00:06:30 contains a big white rectangle, in order to cover up
00:06:33 the template in the background.
00:06:35 And that's how you combine both the Blob Brush,
00:06:37 and the Eraser, with a drawing tablet,
00:06:40 and a pressure sensitive stylus,
00:06:42 in order to achieve very painterly effects
00:06:45 here inside Illustrator.
