00:01:24 As well as a heart, I believe is another one,
00:01:28 right here, a heart, and now I'll go ahead and click
00:01:31 on character and choose no break once again.
00:01:34 So that's a pretty easy solution.
00:01:36 Really it's all about just trying to keep
00:01:38 an eye out for those orphans.
00:01:39 For widows, the easiest solution
00:01:41 is to make a slight adjustment to the leading.
00:01:44 So, for example, I'm going to go ahead
00:01:47 and select up this text right here.
00:01:49 So all the way from the tin woodman
00:01:52 at the top of the second column,
00:01:53 down to the end of the second to last paragraph,
00:01:57 right above the widow, and now what you want to do
00:02:00 is click on the word character one again
00:02:01 to bring up the character panel.
00:02:03 And instead of increasing the leading to 18,
00:02:06 or something like that, let's just take it up to 17.5.
00:02:10 I generally find that very small changes
00:02:12 make a big difference, and then you can press
00:02:14 the enter key, or the return key on the Mac,
00:02:16 to affect that change.
00:02:17 And notice that went ahead and bumped that line up
00:02:20 to the next column.
00:02:22 Alright now I'm going to press the escape key
00:02:23 in order to edit the text editing mode,
00:02:25 and I'll press shift page down
00:02:27 to advance to the last art board,
00:02:29 and you can see at the top of the second column
00:02:32 we have what is easily the worst kind of widow.
00:02:35 Just a couple of words all by themselves.
00:02:38 And so what we need to do is get more text
00:02:41 into that last column on the second art board,
00:02:44 and so i'm going to double click
00:02:45 in the word wicked right here,
00:02:46 and I'm going to click after the D
00:02:48 to set the blinking insertion marker,
00:02:50 and now I'll go ahead and select
00:02:52 the second art board again
00:02:54 from the bottom left corner of the window,
00:02:56 and i'll shift click on the quote
00:02:58 right before I don't know enough.
00:03:01 And that way we've selected all of the text
00:03:03 in the third column, as well as one additional line
00:03:06 on the next art board, and now I'm going to click
00:03:09 on the word character to bring out the character panel
00:03:11 once again, and I'm going to take the leading value down
00:03:14 to 16.5, so half a point less than it was.
00:03:18 Now press the enter key, or the return key on the Mac,
00:03:21 and you can see that the line there upon wicked
00:03:23 has now scooted to this art board.
00:03:25 And so if I were to click in the word wicked
00:03:28 and press the down arrow key,
00:03:29 in order to advance to that third art board,
00:03:32 and I'll just go ahead and scroll down to it
00:03:34 using the scroll wheel on my mouse.
00:03:36 We can see now that those two words after her
00:03:38 are now fitting at the bottom of the first column.
00:03:42 Alright, now we've got a widow at the bottom
00:03:44 of the second column, so what we need to do
00:03:47 is triple click and hold on that last paragraph,
00:03:50 and drag up to the first paragraph in this column,
00:03:53 like so, so that all the lines except the widow are selected
00:03:57 and then click on the word character once again,
00:03:59 and set the leading value half a point higher,
00:04:01 to 17.5, and then press the enter key,
00:04:04 or the return key on the Mac,
00:04:05 to invoke that change.
00:04:07 And the great thing about these half point differences
00:04:09 is you just can't see it.
00:04:11 They're not gonna interfere with the legibility
00:04:13 or the consistency of your type.
00:04:15 Alright now finally we've got another widow
00:04:18 in the form of her right here.
00:04:19 So I'm going to double click and hold
00:04:21 in order to select the word Mary,
00:04:23 and then I'll click the word character,
00:04:25 I'll click in the fly out menu icon,
00:04:26 and I will choose no break
00:04:28 in order to move both of those words down to the last line.
00:04:31 And finally I'll press the escape key
00:04:33 and click off of the text to deselect it.
00:04:35 And that's how you very effectively
00:04:37 deal with orphans and widows
00:04:39 here inside Illustrator using a combination
00:04:42 of the no break command and a half point variation,
00:04:45 one direction or the other, in leading.
