00:01:09  So I'll go ahead and press Control + Z

00:01:10  or Command + Z on the Mac to undo the Join command.

00:01:16  midway down the toolbox.

00:01:17  Or if you're working in the most recent version

00:01:19  of Illustrator, you may need to click

00:01:21  and hold on the Shaper Tool instead.

00:01:23  Either way, you can select the Join Tool

00:01:26  from the bottom of this flyout menu.

00:01:28  And now notice, if I just go ahead

00:01:29  and drag over these segments right there,

00:01:32  that will go ahead and get rid of them

00:01:34  and fuse that area right there

00:01:37  into a single path outline.

00:01:39  Alright, now I'm going to go ahead

00:01:40  and drag across these two points

00:01:41  that don't even overlap each other.

00:01:43  Notice that.

00:01:44  But they're sufficiently close

00:01:46  that Illustrator figures out exactly what to do.

00:01:49  Alright, now I'll press Control + A

00:01:50  or Command + A on the Mac again

00:01:52  to select my remaining path outlines.

00:01:54  And I'll just go ahead and drag

00:01:55  over the top of the arrow.

00:01:56  And once again, it works out beautifully.

00:01:58  And now, I just want to select the top of the arrow,

00:02:01  not its stem.

00:02:02  So in other words, I need to deselect what's selected

00:02:04  and select what's not selected.

00:02:06  And if you ever run into that situation,

00:02:08  all you have to do is go up to the Select menu

00:02:10  and choose Inverse.

00:02:12  And that will go ahead and reverse the selection.

00:02:15  Alright, now I'm going to drag over this area right there

00:02:17  to fuse it, and we end up with an arrowhead.

00:02:21  The next step is to press the V key to switch back

00:02:23  to the black arrow tool and click on this stem right there.

00:02:27  And then I want you to change the line weight to 60 points

00:02:31  so that we have a nice thick stroke.

00:02:33  And now we want to convert that stroke

00:02:34  to a path outline.

00:02:36  And you do that by going to the Object menu,

00:02:38  back down to the Path submenu,

00:02:40  and you choose this guy right here,

00:02:41  Outline Stroke, which will draw a path outline

00:02:44  around that stroke.

00:02:46  And now, if you press Shift + X

00:02:48  in order to swap the fill and stroke attributes,

00:02:51  then you'll end up with this black stroke and no fill.

00:02:54  After which point, I'll take the line weight value

00:02:56  back up to four points.

00:02:58  Alright, now you want to press the A key

00:02:59  in order to switch to the white arrow tool.

00:03:02  And then click off the path to deselect it.

00:03:04  And then, just click on its top segment right there

00:03:07  to select it independently of the anchor points

00:03:09  and press the Backspace key

00:03:11  or the Delete key on the Mac

00:03:12  to get rid of it.

00:03:13  Now I want you to click on this point right there,

00:03:16  and we want to cut the path at that location

00:03:18  by going up to this little scissors icon up here

00:03:20  in the Control panel and clicking on it.

00:03:23  And now we have two anchor points

00:03:24  at that location which I can confirm

00:03:26  by clicking off them and then dragging one

00:03:28  around like so.

00:03:30  Alright, I don't want it up there though,

00:03:31  so I'll press Control + Z

00:03:32  or Command + Z on the Mac

00:03:33  to undo that change.

00:03:35  And I'll press Control + A

00:03:36  or Command + A on the Mac

00:03:37  in order to select all my path outlines.

00:03:40  And now I'll switch back to my Join tool right there,

00:03:42  and I'll just go ahead and drag over those guys.

00:03:45  I can drag over these guys

00:03:46  in order to finish off the project.

00:03:48  So you never know.

00:03:49  Sometimes you need to select the path outlines.

00:03:51  Other times you don't.

00:03:52  Alright, now I'm going to press the V key

00:03:54  in order to switch back to the black arrow tool.

00:03:56  And I'll select my fused arrow.

00:03:58  And I'll go ahead and take the line weight

00:04:00  up to 10 points like so.

00:04:02  And then I'll click off the path outline

00:04:04  in order to deselect it.

00:04:06  And that's how you use the Join tool

00:04:08  to join a bunch of open paths

00:04:09  that are not aligned with each other

00:04:10  in order to create a custom shape

00:04:12  here inside Illustrator.

00:01:17  The "Polar Grid Tool" always results in a group,

00:01:20  as we can see over here

00:01:21  on the far left side of the control panel.

00:01:23  That group is just going to get in our way,

00:01:24  so go up to the "Object" menu and choose

00:01:26  the "Ungroup" command to break all the circles apart.

00:01:30  Now you want to make sure your guides are locked down,

00:01:32  so go up to the "View" menu, choose "Guides"

00:01:35  and then, if the command does not have a check mark

00:01:37  in front of it, as it doesn't in my case, go ahead

00:01:39  and choose that command.

00:01:41  Now you want to switch to the white arrow tool which,

00:01:43  of course, you can get by pushing the "a" key,

00:01:45  and then just go ahead and marqee all of the top points.

00:01:49  Then go up to the "Edit" menu and choose the "Cut" command,

00:01:53  or you can press "ctrl + x" or "cmd + x" on the Mac,

00:01:56  and now cut away the top halves of those circles.

00:01:59  Now, return to the "Edit" menu and choose

00:02:01  the "Paste in Front" command, or you can just press

00:02:03  "crtl + f" or "cmd + f" on the Mac.

00:02:06  Now what you want to do, is drag this point, right here,

00:02:09  over one; just like that, that's as far as you go

00:02:12  and it will just snap into alignment. as we've seen.

00:02:15  Now you want to press "ctrl + a" or "cmd + a" on the Mac

00:02:19  to select everything, then go up to the "Object" menu,

00:02:22  choose "Path" and choose "Join"

00:02:25  or you can just press "ctrl + j" or "cmd + j" on the Mac.

00:02:29  And that will go ahead and join all these half circles

00:02:32  into a single, larger open path.

00:02:36  Now go ahead and click off the paths to deselect them.

00:02:39  Click on this little path, right there, do you see that?

00:02:42  If you go ahead and press "ctrl + plus sign(+)"

00:02:44  a bunch of times in order to zoom in, you'll see that

00:02:47  we have this straight edge in the center of the document.

00:02:50  Click on it with your white arrow and then press

00:02:53  the "Backspace" key or the "Delete" key on the Mac

00:02:55  to get rid of it, then press "ctrl + 0",

00:02:57  or "cmd + 0" on theMac to zoom back out.

00:03:00  I'm going to take the line wave up to, let's say "6 pt",

00:03:03  just so we can better see what we're doing,

00:03:05  and I'm going to click on the word "Stroke"

00:03:07  and select the round "Cap" so that we

00:03:10  have round caps at either end of our spirals.

00:03:12  And I say "spirals" because we actually do have two.

00:03:15  I'm going to press the "v" key to switch

00:03:17  to my black arrow tool, and I'll click off the paths

00:03:19  to deselect them and then I'll click on this guy,

00:03:21  right there, to select it.

00:03:23  I'll change the color of that stroke to,

00:03:24  let's say, blue, so that we can see that we've actually

00:03:27  ended up with two spirals; I just want one

00:03:30  so I'm going to click on that blue spiral again

00:03:32  and press the "Backspace" key or

00:03:34  the "Delete" key on the Mac to get rid of it.

00:03:36  Now let's dress up our spiral by adding a few strokes.

00:03:39  I'll click on it to select it and then I'll go up to the

00:03:42  "Line Wave" option and raise it to "20 pt" for starters,

00:03:45  then I'll go to the "Window" menu choose

00:03:47  the "Appearance" command to bring up the appearance panel

00:03:51  and I'll drop down to the "Add New Stroke" icon

00:03:53  in the lower left corner of the panel,

00:03:55  and I'll click on it to add a new stroke.

00:03:57  I'm going to change the line wave this time

00:03:59  to "10 pts" and I'm going to click on its swatch

00:04:02  and then I'm going to select this shade of red, right here,

00:04:05  which is "R=237 G=28 B=36", in order to add this

00:04:09  nice bright red stroke, and now with that stroke selected,

00:04:13  there inside the appearance panel go up to the "Effect" menu

00:04:16  choose "Distort & Transform" and then choose

00:04:18  the "Transform" command; then I'm going

00:04:21  to change both of my "Move" values to "-2 pt",

00:04:23  like so, and then turn on the "Preview" check box

00:04:26  and you can see that that stroke moves up and to the left,

00:04:29  at which point I'll go ahead and click "Okay".

00:04:32  Now let's make a copy of that stroke by clicking on it,

00:04:34  the red stroke that is, then you want to click on

00:04:37  the little "Page" icon, at the bottom of

00:04:38  the "Appearance" panel, and this time we're going

00:04:40  to take the line way down to "6 pt"and I'm going

00:04:42  to change the color of this stroke to this shade of orange,

00:04:45  right there, "R=241 G=90 B=36" and then I'll twirl

00:04:50  the stroke open by clicking on this little "twirly" triangle

00:04:53  and I'll click on the word "Transform" and I will take both

00:04:56  these values down to "-3pt" this time around

00:04:59  and as soon as I click "Okay" you can see the stroke move

00:05:01  just a little bit up and to the left

00:05:03  then I'll click on this stroke, click on the "Page" icon at

00:05:07  the bottom of the panel to make another copy of it, change

00:05:10  its color this time to this, kind of, yellowish orange,

00:05:13  which is "R=247 G=147 B=30" and then I'll take the line

00:05:18  way down to "2 pt" this time around, I'll click on

00:05:21  the word "Transform" and I will take both of these values

00:05:24  down to "-4 pt" and click "Okay", at which point we now

00:05:28  have all the strokes we need.

00:05:30  Now I'm going to zoom out a little bit

00:05:32  by pressing "ctrl + minus sign (-)"

00:05:33  or "cmd + minus sign (-)" on the Mac

00:05:34  and I'm going to get the rectangle tool

00:05:36  from the "Shape Tool" fly-out menu

00:05:37  and I'll draw from one corner of'

00:05:39  that bleed-guide to the other, like so,

00:05:42  and then I'm going to get rid of the stroke for this shape.

00:05:45  Now I'll change the fill to this second to darkest shade

00:05:48  of gray, which is all values at 26, now I'll press

00:05:52  the "Escape" key to dismiss that panel

00:05:54  and I'll "Right click" inside of that shape,

00:05:57  choose a range and then choose "Send to Back"

00:06:00  in order to send it in back of that spiral.

00:06:04  Then I'm going to switch back here to "Layers" panel,

00:06:06  I'm going to turn off that "Guides" layer,

00:06:08  I'm going to press the "v" key in order to switch back

00:06:11  to my black arrow tool, I'll click off the shape

00:06:13  to deselect it and then I'll zoom back in.

00:06:17  That's how you create a linear spiral,

00:06:19  that in our case, looks like a hot burner,

00:06:21  using a combination of the "Polar Grid Tool"

00:06:24  along with the "Join" command.

00:02:30  And I'll go ahead and change the alignment

00:02:32  by clicking on align center, which won't

00:02:35  necessarily put the text where you want it to be,

00:02:37  but we'll take care of that in a moment.

00:02:39  Next, I'm going to click on the word character

00:02:41  to bring up the character panel,

00:02:42  and I'm going to click on this

00:02:43  down-pointing arrowhead associated

00:02:45  with the kerning value, and I'm going

00:02:47  to change it to Optical in order to

00:02:50  let Illustrator adjust the character spacing on the fly.

00:02:53  And now I'll press the escape key to dismiss that panel,

00:02:55  and I'll press escape again in order

00:02:58  to exit the text entry mode, and that

00:03:00  takes me back, as you can see, to the black arrow tool.

00:03:03  Now, when you have the black arrow tool selected,

00:03:05  you're going to see a few handles around your text.

00:03:08  This handle in the center determines

00:03:10  how the text is aligned on the path outline.

00:03:13  Notice if I drag it too far downward,

00:03:15  then I'm going to flip the text to

00:03:17  the bottom of the path, like so.

00:03:19  At which point you may see that line gets shorter.

00:03:22  It does have a habit of changing size,

00:03:24  but you can still drag it back to the other side,

00:03:27  and you can drag it so that it snaps

00:03:28  into alignment with that center point

00:03:30  at the top of the ellipse.

00:03:33  Now notice that we have a red plus sign

00:03:35  inside of a square, which tells us that

00:03:37  we have some overflow text, and you can

00:03:39  address that by dragging this right edge

00:03:42  all the way down to the right hand end point.

00:03:45  And then, go ahead and scroll over

00:03:46  to the other side of your document,

00:03:48  and drag that left edge all the way

00:03:51  to the far left point, and that

00:03:53  will go ahead and exactly center

00:03:55  your text on the path outline.

00:03:57  All right, now we need to grab the text

00:03:59  that goes along the bottom edge of the ellipse,

00:04:01  and that text is found inside the final

00:04:03  version of our three page document.

00:04:05  It's this byline right here, and you

00:04:07  can just go ahead and click on it

00:04:08  with the black arrow tool, and then

00:04:10  press control C, or command C on a Mac to copy it,

00:04:13  then switch back to your document in progress,

00:04:16  and click on the bottom edge of the ellipse

00:04:18  to select it, and then press the T key

00:04:20  to switch back to the type tool.

00:04:22  Now, go ahead and click on this bottom edge,

00:04:24  anywhere you like, and press control V,

00:04:27  or command V on the Mac, in order

00:04:29  to paste that text into place.

00:04:31  Now, in my case, the text is coming in

00:04:33  on the wrong side of the path,

00:04:34  I'm not really that concerned about that

00:04:36  right yet, and that's because I want

00:04:38  to increase the size of my text

00:04:40  by pressing control A, or command A on the Mac,

00:04:44  to select all the text inside that object.

00:04:46  And now I'm going to change the style

00:04:48  from italic to regular, and I'm going to press

00:04:51  that keyboard shortcut to increase the type size,

00:04:53  that is control, shift, greater than sign here on the PC,

00:04:56  or command, shift, greater than sign on the Mac.

00:04:59  And if you're working along with me,

00:05:00  you want to press that keyboard shortcut

00:05:02  three times in a row, so one, two, three like so

00:05:06  in order to increase the size of that text.

00:05:08  And next, I'll go ahead and click on

00:05:10  the word character up here in the control panel,

00:05:12  and confirm that the kerning is indeed set

00:05:14  to optical, and because it is,

00:05:17  I'll just go ahead and press the escape key

00:05:19  a couple of times in order to escape the text entry mode.

00:05:22  And now we need to reperform those steps

00:05:24  that we applied to the top half of the ellipse,

00:05:27  so I'm going to go ahead and drag

00:05:29  this right edge all the way over to the right anchor point,

00:05:33  and the left edge, as you can see,

00:05:35  is almost all the way to the left point,

00:05:37  but not quite, and now I'll just go ahead

00:05:39  and drag the center handle so that

00:05:41  it exactly aligns to the center point of the path outline,

00:05:45  and then I'll click off the text to deselect it,

00:05:48  and I'll go ahead and center my zoom

00:05:50  by pressing control 0, or command 0 on the Mac.

00:05:53  And that, friends, is how you create

00:05:54  text along a path outline, whether

00:05:57  it starts off as an ellipse, or some

00:05:59  other shape, here inside Illustrator.

00:02:33  and then I'll change the Height value to 70, like so,

00:02:49  for a pull quote, which of course happens to be

00:02:51  on the first art board, once again.

00:02:53  So if you're working along with me,

00:02:54  click in the first icon in the bottom left corner of the screen

00:02:58  and then notice this fifth paragraph,

00:03:00  the one that begins with,

00:03:01  It must be inconvenient to be made of flesh.

00:03:04  Go ahead and double click inside of that

00:03:06  in order to switch to the Type Tool,

00:03:08  and now I'm going to very carefully select

00:03:11  all of that paragraph, from quote to quote,

00:03:14  as we're seeing here.

00:03:16  And I'm not triple clicking, by the way,

00:03:17  because I don't want to select the paragraph return.

00:03:20  I just want to select the text.

00:03:22  And now I'll press Control C, or Command C on the Mac,

00:03:25  to copy that text.

00:03:26  All right, now press the Escape key

00:03:28  in order to exit the Text Entry mode,

00:03:30  and I'll click on the last icon down here in the bottom left

00:03:33  corner of the screen, to advance to the third art board,

00:03:36  and then I'll double click inside this caption,

00:03:38  I'll select this text, once again by dragging over it,

00:03:42  and I'll press Control V, or Command V on the Mac,

00:03:45  in order to paste that text, like so.

00:03:48  And I am Control Spacebar, or Command Spacebar clicking

00:03:51  to zoom in here, even though I have active text,

00:03:54  that is possible.

00:03:55  But I want you to notice, that even though I was so careful

00:03:58  not to select a paragraph return

00:04:00  and to copy one group of letters into another,

00:04:03  I have still brought over the old formatting attributes.

00:04:06  And that's why it's so wonderful

00:04:07  that I have that paragraph style.

00:04:09  All right, I'm going to make a couple of edits here.

00:04:11  I'm going to go ahead and select this text right there

00:04:14  and delete it.

00:04:16  And now I'll click in front of the word, However,

00:04:18  and add a quote, like so.

00:04:20  So we're just tidying up this quote,

00:04:21  so it works as a caption.

00:04:23  And now I'll press the Escape key

00:04:25  in order to accept that change.

00:04:27  All right, now we need to apply that paragraph style

00:04:30  by once again going up to the Window menu,

00:04:32  choosing Type, and then choosing Paragraph Styles,

00:04:35  which will bring up the Paragraph Styles panel right here.

00:04:38  Now by all rights, all you should have to do

00:04:40  is click on the Caption Style, in order to apply it.

00:04:44  But notice that we get that little plus sign,

00:04:46  which tells us that we have local overrides,

00:04:48  which is fairly obvious given that nothing really changed.

00:04:52  And so to eliminate those local overrides,

00:04:54  go ahead and press the Alt key,

00:04:56  or the Option key on the Mac,

00:04:57  and click on Caption again

00:04:59  in order to get rid of the plus sign

00:05:01  and properly style that text.

00:05:04  All right, now let's say at this point

00:05:06  or even a few hours later,

00:05:08  you decide that the captions really ought to be blue,

00:05:11  they ought to be red.

00:05:13  In that case you can redefine the style

00:05:15  and here's the easiest way to do that.

00:05:17  Go ahead and double click inside the text once again,

00:05:19  to switch to the Type Tool

00:05:21  and then double click on a word to select it.

00:05:24  And now I'll assign a new color, by this time,

00:05:26  going up to the first swatch up here in the Control Panel,

00:05:30  and I'll click on it to bring up the Swatches Panel,

00:05:33  and then I'll assign that dark shade of red,

00:05:35  which is R193, G39, B45

00:05:39  and we end up with this red text,

00:05:42  as we can see right here.

00:05:44  And it's easier to see, of course,

00:05:45  when I click off the text, like so.

00:05:47  All right, now you want to go ahead and select that text,

00:05:50  and you don't have to select the entire word, by the way,

00:05:53  you can just select a few characters.

00:05:55  But make sure that you're selecting just the red text,

00:05:58  none of the blue, and then return to this Paragraph Styles Panel,

00:06:01  click on its flyout menu icon

00:06:03  and choose Redefine Paragraph Style

00:06:06  and that will go ahead and update all the text to red.

00:06:10  And not only will you update this caption, by the way,

00:06:13  but if I drop down to these navigation icons

00:06:15  in the bottom left corner of the window, and click on first,

00:06:19  you can see that I've updated the other caption, as well,

00:06:22  because it's linked to that same paragraph style.

00:06:26  All right, and now I'm going to go ahead

00:06:27  and zoom in on this page

00:06:29  and I'll turn off the guides as well,

00:06:31  because folks, we are finally done with this document.

00:06:35  And that's how you save a bunch of formatting attributes

00:06:37  as a paragraph style, apply that paragraph style

00:06:40  to other text objects, and redefine that paragraph style

00:06:44  any time you like, here inside Illustrator.
