00:02:52  which turns out to be what we're looking for.

00:02:54  So that's one way to work.

00:02:56  But what if you want to preview your rotation on the fly?

00:02:59  In that case, I'll go ahead and undo that modification.

00:03:02  You want to go up to the Object menu, choose Transform,

00:03:05  and then choose Rotate.

00:03:07  And notice, this command appears

00:03:08  right under the Move command,

00:03:10  and it behaves very similarly in that it's going to bring up

00:03:13  a dialog box and so you want to make sure

00:03:15  the Preview checkbox is turned on, at which point

00:03:18  you can click inside this Angle value

00:03:20  and press the up arrow key in order to increase the valuie

00:03:24  which produces a counterclockwise rotation.

00:03:27  And you can even press and hold if you like

00:03:29  to just rotate that magnifying glass on the fly.

00:03:32  Then press and hold the down arrow key

00:03:34  in order to reduce that Angle value.

00:03:37  And in the end, I took the value down to 30 degrees

00:03:41  as we're seeing right here.

00:03:43  At which point, I'll go ahead and click the OK button

00:03:46  in order to accept that change.

00:03:48  All right, now I want to move the magnifying glass

00:03:50  so it's back on screen, and I'll do that using the Move

00:03:53  dialog box which, because I have an arrow tool active,

00:03:56  I can access by pressing the "enter" key here on a PC

00:03:59  or the "return" key on a Mac.

00:04:00  All right, I'm going to start by moving the magnifying glass

00:04:03  down and I'll do that by tapping to the Vertical value

00:04:06  and pressing, not the down arrow key,

00:04:08  but rather the up arrow key in order to increase that

00:04:11  value because after all positive vertical values

00:04:14  result in downward movements.

00:04:16  And at this point, I think I've gone too far

00:04:18  so I'll press the down arrow key a few times

00:04:21  in order to nudge the magnifying glass upward.

00:04:24  All right, now I'll go ahead and move this dialog box

00:04:27  offscreen just a little bit so I can see

00:04:29  nearly the entire artboard,

00:04:31  at which point it seems to me that the magnifying glass

00:04:34  is too far to the right, so I'll go ahead and

00:04:36  shift + tab to the horizontal value

00:04:38  and I'll press the down arrow key in order

00:04:41  to scoot the selection over to the left.

00:04:43  And in the end I came up with the Horizontal value

00:04:46  of negative 15 points and a Vertical value

00:04:48  of positive 40 points, at which point I'll go ahead

00:04:51  and click the OK button to accept that change,

00:04:54  and then I'll click off the magnifying glass to deselect it.

00:04:58  All right, now let's say you discover that everything

00:05:01  isn't quite where it's supposed to be.

00:05:02  For example, if I take a look at the final version

00:05:05  of the illustration, notice this highlight right here

00:05:08  on the black portion of the handle?

00:05:10  It's higher than it is in our version right now

00:05:13  and that's because I forgot to scoot it up eight points

00:05:15  before I rotated the magnifying glass.

00:05:18  That's not a problem though.

00:05:19  We can fix that right now by clicking on that highlight

00:05:23  in order to select it with the black arrow tool,

00:05:25  and then press the enter key or the return key on a Mac

00:05:28  to once again bring up the Move dialog box.

00:05:30  Let's zero out those values, and I'm going to change

00:05:32  the Distance value to eight points because I know

00:05:36  that I forgot to move it eight points upward.

00:05:38  However, an upward movement would normally be

00:05:41  90 degrees which would produce this effect here.

00:05:44  The problem is we just got done rotating

00:05:47  that magnifying glass 30 degrees, so what we need to do

00:05:50  is click in the Angle value and set it to 90 plus 30 degrees

00:05:55  and then, if I press the tab key, notice that changes

00:05:58  the Angle value to 120 degrees and that puts that highlight

00:06:02  exactly where it's supposed to be.

00:06:04  At which point I'll click OK to accept that change

00:06:07  and now I'll click off the shapes to deselect them.

00:06:11  And that's how you rotate and move your finished graphic

00:06:14  into the desired location here inside Illustrator.

00:03:35  I get a rotate cursor which allows me to rotate that shape

00:03:39  to, for example, let's say 342.9 degrees.

00:03:43  If I now bring back up my transform panel

00:03:45  by clicking on this little icon right there,

00:03:47  notice that it remembers the degree of rotation.

00:03:51  And so I could override that

00:03:52  and change that to 15 degrees instead,

00:03:55  at which point that will be remembered as well.

00:03:58  And this is a wonderful attribute

00:04:00  of live shapes inside Illustrator.

00:04:02  But that's just by way of demo, of course.

00:04:04  So I'm gonna go ahead and change

00:04:06  that rotate value back to zero and hide the panel.

00:04:10  All right, now I wanna draw a very small shape

00:04:12  using the rectangle tool.

00:04:13  So I'll go ahead and select the tool once again

00:04:16  inside the toolbox or in my flyout tool bar,

00:04:19  and then I'll click inside the document window,

00:04:22  and I'm looking for a width value of eight points,

00:04:24  that's fine, but I want the height value

00:04:26  to be four points like so.

00:04:28  And then I'll go ahead and switch back

00:04:30  to the black arrow tool by pressing the V key.

00:04:33  And I will grab a corner, that's what I'd like to do anyway,

00:04:36  but I can't because of that bounding box,

00:04:39  which, frankly between you and me, has worn out its welcome

00:04:43  and so I'm gonna get rid of it by going to the View menu

00:04:46  and choosing Hide Bounding Box

00:04:48  or you have that keyboard shortcut of Control + Shift + B

00:04:51  or Command + Shift + B on the Mac.

00:04:53  And if you haven't gotten a sense for it yet,

00:04:55  this is probably a keyboard shortcut you want to memorize,

00:04:58  because there's all kinds of times

00:04:59  where you want to turn it on and then turn it back off,

00:05:02  especially when working

00:05:04  with live shapes here inside Illustrator.

00:05:07  I'll go ahead and turn it off,

00:05:08  now you can see I can drag this guy by its corner

00:05:11  and I wanna drop it in the place right here

00:05:14  so that it snaps into alignment with that horizontal guide

00:05:17  as well as the right edge

00:05:19  of that first white rounded rectangle.

00:05:22  All right, now I wanna make a duplicate of this shape

00:05:24  by dragging it by that same corner point

00:05:27  until it snaps into alignment right there.

00:05:29  And now I'll press the Alt key or the Option key on the Mac

00:05:32  to make a copy of that shape like so.

00:05:35  All right, now I'm gonna Shift click on this first shape

00:05:37  so that they're both selected.

00:05:39  And then just for the sake of variety,

00:05:41  I'll drag this top-left point of this second shape

00:05:44  until it snaps into alignment right there.

00:05:47  And you might want to press and hold the Shift key

00:05:49  to constrain the angle of your drag to exactly horizontal,

00:05:52  but you'll definitely want to press and hold the Alt key

00:05:55  or the Option key on the Mac.

00:05:56  So I've got both Shift and Alt down,

00:05:58  that's Shift and Option on the Mac,

00:06:00  and then release, in order to create a copy of those shapes.

00:06:05  All right, now I wanna create a copy of these black shapes

00:06:07  and so I'm gonna Shift click on these two

00:06:10  and then Shift click on this guy as well.

00:06:12  And I'm gonna move them downward by pressing the Enter key

00:06:16  or the Return key on the Mac.

00:06:17  And because the black arrow tool is selected,

00:06:19  that brings up the Move dialogue box.

00:06:22  Although these are not the values that I'm looking for.

00:06:24  So I'm gonna change the horizontal value to zero

00:06:26  and then I'll change the vertical value to 14

00:06:29  which is, as you can see, moves the shapes down.

00:06:32  So positive vertical values result in downward movements.

00:06:36  At which point I'll click the Copy button

00:06:38  in order to create a copy of those shapes.

00:06:40  Now you can see that we really have

00:06:42  a pretty gnarly stacking problem going.

00:06:45  And in cases like these, you're generally better off

00:06:47  sending things to back.

00:06:49  And so I'm gonna go ahead and partially marquee

00:06:52  these shapes right here.

00:06:54  I don't wanna select the circle on the right

00:06:55  or the black shape on the left.

00:06:57  And so make sure that your marquee is inside those areas.

00:07:01  And then, just right click any old place

00:07:03  inside the document window, choose Arrange

00:07:06  and choose Send to Back.

00:07:08  And now I'll go ahead and partially marquee these shapes

00:07:11  in the middle right here.

00:07:13  And I will once again right click, choose Arrange,

00:07:16  and choose Send to Back in order to achieve

00:07:19  this much improved effect here.

00:07:21  All right, now I'll go ahead and press Control + 0

00:07:23  or Command + 0 on the Mac to zoom out.

00:07:25  And just so we can take in the magnifying glass

00:07:27  in all of its glory so far, I'll turn off the guides layer.

00:07:32  And now you can see that by no means

00:07:33  a photo realistic effect.

00:07:35  It makes for a very nice stylized drawing,

00:07:38  thanks to a combination of the rectangle

00:07:41  and black arrow tools working together

00:07:44  with and without the bounding box here inside Illustrator.

00:03:55  and I will change this guy to 2 points, like so.

00:03:59  Now something I want you to notice,

00:04:01  if I zoom in even farther,

00:04:03  just want you to see this really quick,

00:04:04  is that we have the option of changing the Style of Corner,

00:04:08  and you do that by clicking on this little icon right there,

00:04:11  and changing it from rounding outward to rounding inward,

00:04:15  like so, so that's totally an option,

00:04:18  and then you can modify the Roundness on the fly

00:04:20  by dragging one of these circular widgets.

00:04:23  But notice as I do, that the other corner

00:04:25  is independently rounded,

00:04:27  so each one of these Corner controls

00:04:30  affects a single Round Corner,

00:04:33  even if they're all linked together.

00:04:34  Your other option is to apply a chamfer,

00:04:38  which looks like this,

00:04:39  so it's just gonna be a straight bevel,

00:04:41  and that's another thing that you can modify on the fly.

00:04:44  So you can scoot that bevel outward or inward, to taste.

00:04:48  All right, but I really want

00:04:49  to stick with an outwardly rounded corner,

00:04:52  and I want all these guys to be 2 points,

00:04:55  but notice that we have a problem here.

00:04:57  This inner edge right here should not be rounding.

00:05:00  I want it to be straight.

00:05:02  And so, I'm gonna turn off the Chain right there,

00:05:04  the Link control, and I'm gonna change both of these

00:05:07  right hand corners to 0,

00:05:09  which gives me exactly the effect I'm looking for.

00:05:13  All right, I'm gonna zoom out here like so,

00:05:15  and I actually wanna zoom a little farther out,

00:05:18  so that I can take in this black handle,

00:05:20  and as you may recall from our final illustration,

00:05:23  I'm looking for this end of the handle

00:05:26  to round significantly outward,

00:05:29  much more than the other side.

00:05:30  And that's gonna create a kind of forced perspective.

00:05:33  And so what we really wanna do is modify these two

00:05:36  left hand corners independently of the right ones.

00:05:40  And I wanna do so just by dragging.

00:05:43  And we know that you can just double-click

00:05:44  on one of these Corners,

00:05:46  and because they're no longer linked to each other,

00:05:48  I could just change this guy to something like 12 points,

00:05:51  let's say, and press the Enter key,

00:05:53  or the Return key on a Mac, to apply that change.

00:05:56  But then notice that if I start dragging,

00:05:59  all of the corners are rounding, relative to this one.

00:06:03  So, this top left corner is still rounding more

00:06:06  than the other three, but they are rounding together.

00:06:09  That's not really what I want, so I'll press Control + Z,

00:06:12  or Command + Z on a Mac, a couple of times,

00:06:14  in order to Undo that change.

00:06:17  And I'll go ahead and switch from the Black Arrow Tool

00:06:19  to the White Arrow, which I can get by pressing the a key.

00:06:22  And a great thing about the White Arrow

00:06:24  is that it allows you

00:06:26  to modify different corners independently of each other.

00:06:30  And we're gonna see in a future chapter

00:06:31  just how incredibly useful that can be.

00:06:34  But for now, I'm just gonna go ahead

00:06:36  and marquee these two corners,

00:06:38  so that they're selected independently of the other two,

00:06:41  and I'll go ahead and drag this widget down

00:06:43  and you can see I am now only affecting

00:06:47  the left hand corners.

00:06:48  And I'm gonna drag it as far as it goes.

00:06:51  And notice, I can't go any farther than 32 points,

00:06:54  which makes absolute sense given that as you may recall,

00:06:59  and I'll bring up the Transform panel just so we can see,

00:07:01  that the shape is 64 points tall.

00:07:04  And so half of 64 is 32,

00:07:06  and so you can only Round the Corner

00:07:08  to half the width or the height,

00:07:10  whatever is the smallest of a given shape.

00:07:14  At which point, I'll go ahead and hide the Transform panel,

00:07:17  I'll click off the shape to deselect it

00:07:19  and I'll press Ctrl + 0, or Command + 0 on the Mac

00:07:21  to center my zoom.

00:07:23  And that's how you Round the Corners of a rectangle,

00:07:26  whether you draw it with the Rectangle Tool

00:07:28  or the neighboring Rounded Rectangle Tool,

00:07:31  it doesn't matter at all.

00:07:33  And you can do so entirely dynamically

00:04:08  and then I'll switch back to the rectangle tool

00:04:10  so that I can see the round corner controls

00:04:13  and I'll double-click on any one of them

00:04:15  to bring up the transform panel.

00:04:17  And I'll change any of these linked values here

00:04:19  to two points and press the enter key

00:04:21  or the return key on a Mac.

00:04:23  And you can see my problem.

00:04:24  It's pretty subtle, but it is an issue.

00:04:26  Notice that this corner right here is rounding back in

00:04:30  before it hits the edge of this big circle

00:04:33  and that's not what I want.

00:04:34  So I'm going to unround these two corners.

00:04:37  The ones on the right-hand side of the shape

00:04:39  by turning off this link icon.

00:04:41  And then I'll go ahead and change

00:04:43  both of these right-hand values to zero points.

00:04:45  So I'll enter zero for one, press the tab key,

00:04:47  and enter zero for the other.

00:04:49  And we end up with this effect here,

00:04:51  which is exactly what I want.

00:04:53  You may also decide you want to change the roundness

00:04:56  of one corner or even a pair of corners

00:04:58  independently of the others.

00:05:01  For example, I want to round the heck out of

00:05:03  this edge right here of the handle of the magnifying glass.

00:05:07  And that's because if you check out the final effect,

00:05:10  that gives it the appearance of perspective.

00:05:12  So we have this kind of flat view up here near the glass,

00:05:16  but as we get farther away, we have more of a round view.

00:05:20  And it's a kind of forced perspective effect,

00:05:22  but I think it looks good.

00:05:23  So I'm going to switch back to my document so far

00:05:26  and I will press the control key or the command key on a Mac

00:05:29  to get that black arrow tool on the fly

00:05:31  and I'll click on this path to select it

00:05:34  and then I'll release the control or command key

00:05:36  in order to return control to the rectangle tool.

00:05:39  Alright, now notice that we have these two handles

00:05:42  right here and I could modify them independently

00:05:45  by the way since they're not linked any more

00:05:47  by changing their values here inside the transform panel.

00:05:51  So for example, I could take this first value up to 20,

00:05:54  let's say, in order to edit that corner

00:05:56  independently of the others.

00:05:58  But if I drag with this tool

00:06:00  that I am going to relatively modify

00:06:03  all of the round corners as you're seeing here.

00:06:06  What if you want to change the roundness

00:06:08  just by dragging inside the document window,

00:06:10  but you want to effect some corners independently of others?

00:06:13  Well then I'll go ahead and press control z

00:06:16  or command z on a Mac a few times

00:06:17  in order to restore the corners to the way they were.

00:06:20  And then I'll switch to the white arrow tool.

00:06:23  Which of course you can get by pressing the a key

00:06:25  and that allows me not only to modify

00:06:28  the round corners if I want to,

00:06:29  and we'll see more about that in a later chapter

00:06:32  because it's an incredibly powerful feature,

00:06:34  but you can also just go ahead and marquee

00:06:37  these two corners like so in order to select them

00:06:41  independently of the others and then you can go ahead

00:06:43  and drag one of those two circles to its absolute maximum.

00:06:47  Notice at a radius of 32 points, we top out here

00:06:50  and we end up with a half circle at the end of the shape

00:06:55  which is no surprise by the way that the value is 32

00:06:58  because it's half of the full height

00:07:00  of this shape which is 64 points.

00:07:03  Just in case you're wondering where that's coming from.

00:07:05  Alright, with that, we'll just go ahead and zoom back out

00:07:08  by pressing control zero or command zero on a Mac

00:07:10  and I'll click off the paths in order to deselect them.

00:07:13  And that's how you adjust the roundness of the corners

00:07:16  of a rectangle whether it was drawn

00:07:18  with the standard rectangle tool

00:07:20  or the rounded rectangle tool.

00:07:22  And don't forget that the entire process is dynamic

00:04:34  I want to create some very thin rectangles

00:04:36  that have a width of eight points

00:04:38  and a height of 48 points, and once again

00:04:41  if you turn that chain on, if you turn on the link,

00:04:44  then these values are going to change relatively.

00:04:48  They're not going to necessarily be the same

00:04:50  unless, of course, they started out the same.

00:04:52  Anyway, I'm going to take that width value back down

00:04:54  to eight points, so eight and 48 is what we're looking for,

00:04:57  at which point, click "OK" in order

00:05:00  to create that rectangle.

00:05:01  If you want to create a rectangle from the center out,

00:05:04  then you "alt" or "opt + click" like so,

00:05:07  and then click "OK" and it will be centered

00:05:10  as we're seeing right here.

00:05:13  and zoom in a little and I'll press the "v" key in order

00:05:16  to switch to my Black Arrow tool and what I need to do is

00:05:19  move these shapes backward a little bit

00:05:21  so that they're not in front of the rings

00:05:23  of the magnifying glass, so I'm going to go ahead

00:05:26  and partially marquee these four rectangles,

00:05:28  and I'll right click anywhere inside the document window,

00:05:32  choose "Arrange" and then choose "Send to back"

00:05:35  in order to move those shapes all the way back,

00:05:38  and as you can see, they're now in back of the ring,

00:05:40  at which point, I want you to go ahead

00:05:42  and select this rectangle by clicking on its centerpoint

00:05:46  and then drag it over while pressing the "shift" key

00:05:49  until it snaps into alignment

00:05:51  with the rim of this outer circle,

00:05:53  and then press the left arrow key twice

00:05:56  to scoot that rectangle out two points.

00:05:58  All right, now we're going to do

00:06:00  the same thing with this guy.

00:06:01  I'll go ahead and click on its center point,

00:06:02  drag it down until it snaps into alignment right there

00:06:06  at the intersection of these two guides,

00:06:08  and then press the right arrow key a couple of times

00:06:11  to scoot that guy two points to the right.

00:06:13  Now I'm still covering up this first rectangle,

00:06:16  and that's because paths are stacked by default

00:06:19  in the order that you draw them,

00:06:20  so left to its own devices, Illustrator is going to put

00:06:23  the most recent path at the top of the stack

00:06:26  and this guy's an older path as we can see,

00:06:29  and so the easiest way to put him right in front

00:06:31  of this path is to go up to the Edit menu

00:06:34  and choose the "cut" command,

00:06:35  or press "ctrl + x" or "cmd + x" on a Mac

00:06:38  in order to move that path to the clipboard

00:06:41  and then select that shape right there,

00:06:44  the one that you want to paste it in front of,

00:06:47  and then go to the Edit menu and choose the

00:06:50  "Paste in front" command, or press "ctrl + f"

00:06:52  here on the PC, or "cmd + f" on the Mac,

00:06:55  and we end up with this effect here

00:06:57  and now with this path selected, I'm going to go up

00:07:01  to the Control Panel and I'm going to click

00:07:03  on this first swatch right here and change it to black

00:07:05  so that we have a black handle,

00:07:08  and now I'll click off the path outline to deselect it

00:07:10  and I'll press "ctrl + 0" or "cmd + 0" on the Mac

00:07:13  in order to center my zoom,

00:07:15  and that's how you use the Rectangle tool

00:07:17  to achieve some highly practical results

00:07:20  here inside Illustrator.
