 And notice now that we're seeing Artboard 1

00:01:02  at the back of the stack.

00:01:04  So the top Artboard is the furthest one back.

00:01:07  And then down here we have Uberboard at the bottom

00:01:10  which is the top of the stack.

00:01:12  So if you don't want Uberboard to be at the very top,

00:01:15  then you can go ahead and drag it up the list like so.

00:01:18  Now, sometimes it's hard to get to the very top of the list,

00:01:21  you end up missing it.

00:01:23  In which case, nothing is going to happen.

00:01:24  And the solution, if you run into that problem,

00:01:27  is to just go ahead and drag it nearly

00:01:29  all the way up the stack like so.

00:01:31  And then click on this up arrow icon

00:01:33  at the bottom of the panel,

00:01:34  in order to move that Artboard one up.

00:01:37  Now, I'll go ahead and click on Arboard 1 to select it.

00:01:40  And now I want you to see that

00:01:42  if you switch to the Arboard tool,

00:01:43  which we still need to get work done by the way.

00:01:47  Then now I can just click on any old Artboard

00:01:50  in order to select it.

00:01:51  Because Uberboard is safely out of the way.

00:01:54  Alright, now what I want to do

00:01:56  is get rid of the irregularly sized Artboards,

00:01:59  the ones that don't match our boards one through six.

00:02:03  And I'm going to do that by first

00:02:05  clicking on Artboard 7 here inside the Artboards list.

00:02:08  And then Shift-clicking on our board 0.

00:02:11  In order to select all three of them.

00:02:14  So Shift-clicking will select a range of our boards.

00:02:17  Now I also want to get rid of the Uberboard.

00:02:19  So, instead of Shift-clicking on it,

00:02:21  because it's out of sequence,

00:02:23  I'll press the Control key or the Command key

00:02:25  on the Mac and click on it.

00:02:27  And that allows me to select non-adjacent Artboards.

00:02:30  Alright, now what you want to do is

00:02:32  rather than pressing the back space key,

00:02:34  or the delete key on a Mac,

00:02:35  which is just going to get rid of the one

00:02:37  selected Arboard we see here inside the Document window.

00:02:40  You want to click on this little trash icon

00:02:42  in the bottom-right corner of the Artboards panel,

00:02:45  and that will get rid of everything besides

00:02:48  Artboards one through six.

00:02:50  Alright, we still have these ex fed numerals however.

00:02:53  So I'm going to press the Escape key to switch back

00:02:55  to my black arrow tool.

00:02:56  And I'm going to click on this zero,

00:02:58  and then Shift-click, so press the Shift key

00:03:00  and click on the seven and the eight.

00:03:02  And that will add them to the selection.

00:03:04  And then you can press the Back space key

00:03:06  or the Delete key on the Mac to get rid of them.

00:03:09  Alright, now I want to zoom out

00:03:10  so I have a little more room to work,

00:03:11  because I want to create a total of 10 Artboards.

00:03:15  So I'm going to do that by going up to the View menu

00:03:18  and choosing the Zoom Out command.

00:03:20  And, now let's say I want to move these Artboards

00:03:23  around a little bit.

00:03:24  It really doesn't matter where we move them physically

00:03:27  inside of the paste board.

00:03:28  I just want to get them away from each other a little bit.

00:03:30  So, I'm going to once again switch to the Artboard tool,

00:03:34  because it's the only tool that allows you

00:03:35  to move things around.

00:03:36  And I'm going to click on Artboard 6 and drag it away.

00:03:39  But notice that number two is stuck to it.

00:03:42  And that's because,

00:03:43  I'll go ahead Control Z or Command Z on the Mac

00:03:45  to undo that move.

00:03:46  And I'll press the Escape key

00:03:47  to switch back to the black arrow tool.

00:03:49  Notice that if I click on the two,

00:03:51  its bounding box drops down into Artboard 6.

00:03:55  However, if I click on the six,

00:03:57  its bounding box does not go up into Artboard 2.

00:04:00  So, what I need to do,

00:04:02  if I want to get these two things apart form each other

00:04:04  is drag Artboard 2 away from six.

00:04:07  I also need to drag Artboard 1 away from five,

00:04:11  because one descends down into five,

00:04:13  five does not however go up into one.

00:04:15  If that makes any sense.

00:04:16  And that is the kind of stuff you run into all the time.

00:04:19  So, I'll go ahead and switch back to my Artboard tool.

00:04:22  And I'll go ahead and drag Artboard 1 up,

00:04:25  and Artboard 2 as well.

00:04:26  And now I am making no effort to align them at all.

00:04:30  I am just trying to get them away from each other

00:04:32  as we're seeing here.

00:04:34  Alright, now let's say we want to duplicate a few Artboards

00:04:36  and I want to duplicate a bunch at a time.

00:04:39  I'm going to go up to the View menu and choose Zoom Out

00:04:42  once again just to get further away

00:04:44  to make sure I have tons of room.

00:04:46  So I'm going to drag these guys down.

00:04:48  So non of the numbers get stuck on the wrong Artboards.

00:04:51  And then I'm going to go ahead and click on Artboard 1

00:04:53  and Shift-click on Artboard 4.

00:04:56  Then if you want to duplicate all four of those Artboards,

00:04:59  just go ahead and drag them down

00:05:01  onto this little page icon

00:05:02  at the bottom of the Artboards panel

00:05:04  in order to make duplicates of them.

00:05:06  And notice that they appear way over here

00:05:09  on the right-hand side of the paste board.

00:05:11  At which point, I'll just go ahead

00:05:13  and drag them into different positions.

00:05:16  Let's say, like so.

00:05:18  And it looks like I'm going to have to

00:05:19  scroll over to the right a little bit,

00:05:21  in order to get these guys.

00:05:23  And now, I'm just going to change

00:05:25  the numbers in the orders I see them.

00:05:27  So, I'll go ahead and click on the Type tool

00:05:30  in order to switch back to it.

00:05:32  And I'll change this one right here to a five,

00:05:34  and this guy to a six, and this guy to a seven.

00:05:37  This guy to eight.

00:05:38  You get the idea, nine and zero of course.

00:05:42  And also, we might as well go ahead

00:05:44  and renumber these Artboards.

00:05:46  Here inside the panel is the easiest way to work,

00:05:49  so I'll just go ahead and press the Escape key,

00:05:51  in order to accept the change of that text.

00:05:54  And I'm going to go ahead and change

00:05:56  this guy right there, which contains a zero.

00:05:58  I'll change him to Artboard 0.

00:06:00  And notice the first time I double-click

00:06:03  I'm going to zoom in on that Artboard.

00:06:06  But if I go ahead and double-click

00:06:07  on the name of Artboard 5 right here,

00:06:09  I'm not going to zoom in on it,

00:06:11  and that's just a little quirk.

00:06:13  If you want to go to that Artboard,

00:06:15  double-click on its number like so,

00:06:16  and that'll take you there.

00:06:17  So you can see, this is definitely Artboard 9.

00:06:21  Artboard 7, if I double-click on it,

00:06:23  that's the one that actually contains the five,

00:06:25  so it should be called Artboard 5 like so.

00:06:29  Now I'll go ahead and rename this next guy.

00:06:31  Artboard 6 I believe is what it needs to be called.

00:06:34  Then this one is going to be Artboard 7

00:06:36  because it contains the number seven is the idea.

00:06:39  And then Artboard 8.

00:06:41  Alright, now let's say we want to navigate

00:06:43  between the Artboards.

00:06:44  You can do that, as I said,

00:06:46  by just double-clicking on the number

00:06:48  for the Artboard like so.

00:06:50  Or you can drop down to the Artboard numbers

00:06:53  in the lower-left corner of the screen.

00:06:55  And notice if you click this down-pointing arrow head,

00:06:58  it's going to show you all these Artboard numbers

00:07:00  and it looks like some of the Artboard names,

00:07:03  I'm not sure what that's about.

00:07:05  But what's more useful is our ability

00:07:07  to switch from one page to the next.

00:07:09  And you can do that by clicking on this next button,

00:07:11  which is going to take you to the next page, like so.

00:07:14  So from one to two, and then two to three,

00:07:16  and three to four.

00:07:17  Or you can press the keyboard shortcut Shift, page down.

00:07:21  And if you're working on a lap top,

00:07:23  you may need to press the Function key.

00:07:25  An FN key that is in order to make that work.

00:07:27  But notice when I went to the next Artboard

00:07:30  it's the one that contains the nine,

00:07:32  and then I go to the one that contains the zero,

00:07:34  and then next it's the one that contains the five,

00:07:36  then the six, then the seven, and then the eight.

00:07:39  And, the reason for that is it doesn't matter

00:07:42  what the names of the Artboards are,

00:07:44  it matters what their order is

00:07:46  here inside the Artboards panel.

00:07:47  So what I need to do is Shift-click on

00:07:50  Artboard 5 right there.

00:07:51  So that five through eight are selected.

00:07:53  And then drag them and drop them

00:07:55  between Artboards 4 and 9 like so.

00:07:59  So that everything's in the proper order.

00:08:01  And now, if I go ahead and double-click

00:08:03  on Artboard 1 to switch to it,

00:08:05  and then I press Shift, page down,

00:08:07  in order to advance from one page to the next,

00:08:10  everything works out the way that it should.

00:08:12  You can also, by the way, press Shift, page up,

00:08:16  in order to go back a page.

00:08:18  If you want to go all the way back to the very first page,

00:08:21  you press Control, Shift, page up.

00:08:24  That's Command, Shift, page up on a Mac.

00:08:26  If you want to go to the very last page,

00:08:28  you press Control, Shift, page down.

00:08:30  That's Command, Shift, page down on the Mac.

00:08:33  Alright, now I'm just going to go up to the View menu

00:08:35  and choose Fit All in Window.

00:08:37  So that we can see all of our Artboards.

00:08:40  They're all the same size now,

00:08:41  even though they're scattered all over the place.

00:08:44  And that is a problem that we are going to take care of

00:08:47  in the very next movie.

  because it's selected and that means

00:01:02  I'm going to go ahead and scale artboard zero,

00:01:04  which is not what I want.

00:01:05  So I'll press Control Z,

00:01:07  or Command Z on the Mac

00:01:08  to undo that change.

00:01:09  But notice even if I try to start

00:01:11  at the opposite corner of the bottom right corner

00:01:13  of artboard eight I end up scaling it,

00:01:17  even though it wasn't selected.

00:01:19  So what I need to do is press Control Z,

00:01:21  or Command Z on the Mac,

00:01:22  make sure I'm starting on a deselected artboard

00:01:25  and press the Shift key in order to tell Illustrator

00:01:28  that I want to create a new artboard.

00:01:31  So once again, that's the Shift key,

00:01:33  and notice as I start to drag

00:01:34  I'm creating a brand new artboard.

00:01:37  The problem is because I still

00:01:39  have the Shift key down,

00:01:40  I'm constraining it to the aspect ratio

00:01:43  of the last selected artboard,

00:01:45  which of course, is artboard zero.

00:01:47  So what I need to do is now release the Shift key.

00:01:50  So you just need to have the Shift key down

00:01:51  at the beginning of your drag,

00:01:53  and then just go ahead and drag

00:01:54  until you snap into alignment

00:01:56  with the upper left corner of artboard zero, like so,

00:02:00  and you have an artboard that's exactly big enough

00:02:02  to contain all the other artboards.

00:02:04  The problem is, it seems to me at least,

00:02:06  from an aesthetic perspective,

00:02:08  is that we should have a little bit of gap

00:02:11  around the edges of the artboard, as well,

00:02:13  that matches the gap between the artboards,

00:02:16  which you may recall from the previous movie,

00:02:19  is 60 points.

00:02:20  So what I'm going to do is go up to the

00:02:22  reference point matrix,

00:02:23  switch it from the upper left corner

00:02:25  to the center point right there,

00:02:27  and then go ahead and click in the Width value,

00:02:29  click after it, and we're going to enter not plus 60

00:02:33  because what we really want is 60 points on the left

00:02:35  and 60 points on the right,

00:02:37  so instead we need to enter plus 60 times two,

00:02:40  which by the way is plus 120.

00:02:43  And then press the Tab key

00:02:45  and we get an extra 60 points on either side.

00:02:48  And now that I have the Height value selected,

00:02:51  I'll go ahead and press the right arrow key

00:02:52  in order to move to the end of that value,

00:02:55  and I'll enter plus 120 once again

00:02:58  in order to add 60 points above, and below,

00:03:01  the existing artboards.

00:03:03  All right, Illustrator's calling this new Artboard 13,

00:03:06  for whatever reason, so I'm just going to click the word

00:03:09  Name up here in the Control Panel

00:03:10  in order to select the existing name,

00:03:13  and I'll replace it with Uber Board

00:03:15  and press the Enter key, or the Return key on the Mac,

00:03:17  to rename that artboard.

00:03:19  All right, now the problem becomes one

00:03:21  of stacking order, and what I mean by that is

00:03:24  that Illustrator thinks of one artboard as

00:03:27  being in front of another one,

00:03:29  and by default, the last artboard created

00:03:31  is the one in front,

00:03:33  and the first artboard is the one in back.

00:03:36  So the one that's called one oh one right there,

00:03:38  for Artboard one, that's at the back of the stack.

00:03:41  And the one that's called 10, Uber Board,

00:03:43  is in front of all the other ones,

00:03:45  which means if I try to click on Artboard one,

00:03:47  I don't end up selecting it.

00:03:50  If you want to select an artboard that's below

00:03:52  another artboard, all you need to do

00:03:55  is click on its title, like so.

00:03:58  And that's going to allow you to select

00:03:59  any artboard inside of your Illustration,

00:04:02  which means it's a good habit to get into, as

00:04:05  opposed to just trying to click on an artboard to select it,

00:04:08  notice I clicked on artboard three

00:04:09  and I ended up selecting the Uber Board instead.

00:04:12  Just go ahead and get in the habit of

00:04:14  clicking in the title, and that way there's less ambiguity,

00:04:18  you know exactly which artboard you're selecting.

00:04:21  So once again, if you want to create an artboard,

00:04:24  either on top of, or inside of another artboard,

00:04:27  you press and hold the Shift key,

00:04:29  and drag, like so.

00:04:31  Obviously I don't want this new artboard,

00:04:34  so I'm just going to press the Backspace key,

00:04:36  or the Delete key on the Mac to get rid of it.

00:04:38  And if you want to select an artboard

00:04:40  that's behind another one,

00:04:41  just go ahead and click on its Gray title, like so.

  We have all sorts of options for scaling artboards

 inside of Illustrator.

  If you want to go with a preset paper size,  then go up here to the Control panel, click on

00:01:30  what is now the word Custom, and choose a size,

00:01:33  such as Letter here inside the States,

00:01:36  or A4 in Europe and elsewhere,

00:01:39  and notice that that page is scaling

00:01:40  from the center outward, so if I select a massive

00:01:43  paper size, such as Tabloid, I am going to grow that page

00:01:47  in all directions.

00:01:49  You can also change the orientation of that page

00:01:52  by clicking on one of these icons,

00:01:54  either Portrait as we're seeing now,

00:01:56  or Landscape in order to make it wider than it is tall.

00:02:00  All right, I'm going to go ahead and drag this page

00:02:02  downward, and notice, by the way, that the Move/Copy

00:02:05  Artwork with Artboard button is turned off,

00:02:09  so that I can move that artboard independently,

00:02:12  which is typically very important when you're trying

00:02:14  to scale and position an artboard.

00:02:18  All right, another way to work is to just go ahead

00:02:20  and drag one of these eight handles that surrounds

00:02:22  the artboard.

00:02:23  If you want to constrain the aspect ratio, then go ahead

00:02:27  and press the shift key as you drag, like so,

00:02:30  and you need to keep that shift key down,

00:02:32  because if at any point you release it,

00:02:35  then you're going to be able to change the aspect ratio

00:02:37  to anything you want.

00:02:38  If you want to reconstrain it, then go ahead and press

00:02:41  and hold that shift key once again, until you go ahead

00:02:44  and release the mouse button.

00:02:46  Another thing I want you to notice is that as you're

00:02:49  dragging a corner handle, you're going to see

00:02:51  width and height values in that heads up display,

00:02:55  and that is once again a function of Smart Guides.

00:02:58  If I were to go up to the View menu, and choose the

00:02:59  Smart Guides command off, and then drag that corner

00:03:03  handle once again, those width and height values

00:03:06  are going to disappear, so as I was saying in the previous

00:03:09  movie, you really want to make sure that Smart Guides

00:03:11  are turned on when you're working with artboards

00:03:14  inside Illustrator.

00:03:16  Also notice these width and height values up here

00:03:18  in the Control panel, which allow you to dial in

00:03:20  specific measurements.

00:03:22  For example, I could change the Width value to something

00:03:24  like 16 inches, so 16", and then press the "Tab" key

00:03:28  to advance to the Height value, and change it,

00:03:31  let's say to 10 inches, and then press the "Enter" key

00:03:35  or the "Return" key on a Mac in order to make that change,

00:03:38  and now that I've done that, now that I've established

00:03:40  this 16 by 10 ratio, I can go ahead and click on this chain

00:03:45  icon right there to constrain the width and height values,

00:03:49  and so now if I change the width value to let's say

00:03:52  20 inches, I'm going to change the height value by that

00:03:56  same amount, in this case to what amounts to 900 points.

00:04:00  The problem is, everything is happening from the center

00:04:03  once again, and that's a function of this little Reference

00:04:07  Point matrix right there.

00:04:09  Notice that the center square is turned on,

00:04:12  so let's say that I really want everything to align the way

00:04:16  it was aligning before,

00:04:17  that is to say the upper right corner of the page

00:04:19  should be right where you see my cursor.

00:05:06  to 10 inches, which is the same as 720 points

00:05:10  because I have this chain icon turned on.

00:05:12  That's not what I want, however, so I'm just going to

00:05:14  turn that chain off, and now,

00:05:16  I'll just go ahead and drag this bottom right corner handle

00:05:20  until things snap into alignment like so

00:05:22  and now I have this perfectly scaled artboard

00:05:25  that takes up the space that was formerly occupied

00:05:28  by both artboard 7 and 8.

00:05:30  All right, now I'm just going to press the "escape" key

00:05:32  to switch back to that black arrow tool

00:05:34  and now I'm going to go ahead and click on that 8

00:05:36  to select it.

00:05:37  I don't really need it anymore because we only have

00:05:39  seven artboards, but, oftentimes, instead of getting rid

00:05:42  of an object by pressing the "backspace" key

00:05:45  or the "delete" key on a Mac, I'll go ahead and Undo that,

00:05:48  what you want to do instead is just set it aside

00:05:51  by dragging it out into the Paste board,

00:05:53  and that can be really useful for keeping objects

00:05:56  that you spent a lot of time on, but you're not sure if you

00:05:58  want in this specific document, or if you're working

00:06:02  with other people and they're creating elements

00:06:04  and you're creating elements,

00:06:06  and you're not sure if they want this one anymore

00:06:08  so you just move it out here into what is essentially

00:06:11  a junk drawer, so that if somebody does need that object

00:06:15  ever again, they can just drag it back into an artboard

00:06:18  and make it part of the real printing exportable version

00:06:21  of the document.

00:06:23  All right, now I'll go ahead and select the 7 right there

00:06:25  by clicking on it, and I'm going to align it to the artboard

00:06:28  by clicking on the word Align up here in the Control panel

00:06:32  and making sure that Align To down here in the bottom

00:06:34  right corner is set to Align to Artboard,

00:06:37  and then I'll go ahead and click on this guy,

00:06:40  the second icon, and Horizontal Align Center, in order to

00:06:44  center the 7 like so, and then I'll just click off the 7

00:06:47  a couple of times in order to hide the panel

00:06:49  as well as deselect the 7.

00:06:52  And now I'll go up to the View menu and choose

00:06:53  Fit All in Window in order to center all of my artboards

00:06:57  on screen,

00:06:58  and that's how you delete and scale artboards,

00:07:01  using the Artboard tool, here inside Illustrator.

  inside of Illustrator is that they survive a save operation.

00:01:06  So if I go up to the file menu and choose the save command,

00:01:09  or press that keyboard shortcut

00:01:11  control s or command s on the Mac,

00:01:13  I have now saved the document as indicated by

00:01:16  the lack of asterisk after the title here in the title tab.

00:01:20  And yet, I can still press control z or command z on the Mac

00:01:24  in order to undo the various operations

00:01:26  that I applied before saving.

00:01:28  The one thing you can not undo

00:01:31  in Illustrator however, is a revert.

00:01:33  So for example, if I go up to the file menu

00:01:36  and choose the revert command

00:01:38  or I can press the keyboard shortcut F12 here on the PC

00:01:42  On the Mac it's a very different

00:01:44  shortcut of command option z.

00:01:46  Then I'll get this alert message

00:01:48  which tells me I'm going to abandon all of my modifications

00:01:51  and reload the saved version of my document.

00:01:55  And it's very important that you respond

00:01:57  to this alert message deliberately because it is permanent.

00:02:01  So notice if I click on the revert button

00:02:03  in order to restore that saved version of the document

00:02:06  which now features the artboard

00:02:08  disassociated from the numeral one,

00:02:10  then notice if I go up to the edit menu

00:02:12  both the undo and redo commands are dimmed.

00:02:16  So if I want to restore my document to the way it looked

00:02:19  when I first opened it in the previous movie,

00:02:21  I'm going to have to do so manually

00:02:22  by switching to the artboard tool,

00:02:24  which once again you can get by pressing shift o.

00:02:27  And then I'll just go ahead

00:02:28  and drag that artboard into place.

00:02:31  And assuming that I have smart guides turned on,

00:02:33  and that's by default, then at some point

00:02:36  I'm going to see those intersection lines

00:02:38  appearing through the center of artboards two and five.

00:02:42  At which point I'll go ahead and release

00:02:44  in order to reestablish that artboard to its proper location

00:02:48  Then I'll press the escape key

00:02:50  in order to return to the black arrow tool.

00:02:52  I'll go up to the view menu and choose fit all in window

00:02:56  in order to center my artboards.

00:02:58  And then I'll go up to the file menu

00:03:00  and choose the save command in order to

00:03:02  save my modifications to disk.

00:03:04  And that is the relationship between undoing and reverting,

00:03:09  specifically you can undo and redo

00:03:11  just about anything you like except for the revert command.
