00:03:40  you want to go up to the Type menu,

00:03:42  and choose the Create Outlines command,

00:03:51  Thing is, if you drag one of these widgets,

00:04:05  If you want to get some nice round corners,

00:04:08  then go up to the Corners value

00:04:10  up here in the Control Panel, click in it,

00:04:12  and set it to something super high, like 100 points,

00:04:15  and then press the Enter key to apply that change

00:04:17  and you'll see all of the corners round uniformly,

00:04:21  as in this case right here,

00:04:23  and Illustrator will also change that Corners value

00:04:26  automatically to the highest value it can,

00:04:29  which in my case is 5.57.

00:04:32  Alright, now notice that once again,

00:04:34  we have some problems with our strokes.

00:04:36  Most of the corners are nice and round,

00:04:37  except for these down here at the bottom of the W,

00:04:40  which are beveled.

00:04:42  And to fix that, click on the word Stroke

00:04:44  up here in the Control Panel,

00:04:45  and change the Corner to Round Join, like so,

00:04:48  and then drop down to Align Stroke here

00:04:52  and click on Align Stroke to Outside

00:04:54  to shift the strokes to the outside of the letters,

00:04:57  which makes them a little more legible.

00:04:59  Alright, now I'm going to press the Escape key

00:05:01  in order to hide that panel,

00:05:02  and now notice that we have a little bit of gap

00:05:04  between the O and the W.

00:05:06  In order to fix that, press Ctrl Shift A,

00:05:09  or Cmd Shift A on the Mac,

00:05:10  in order to deselect the text,

00:05:12  and then click on the W,

00:05:13  and Shift click on the exclamation point

00:05:15  in order to select them independently of the P and the O,

00:05:19  and then press Ctrl K, or Cmd K on the Mac,

00:05:22  to bring up the Preferences dialog box.

00:05:24  And just in case you were working with me

00:05:26  in the previous chapter,

00:05:27  let's take the Keyboard Increment value

00:05:29  back up to 1 point, and then click OK,

00:05:32  and now press the Left arrow key

00:05:34  in order to nudge those letters together,

00:05:36  so that all of the strokes touch.

00:05:38  And then, if you want to make sure

00:05:39  your text is still centered,

00:05:41  then press the V key to switch to the black arrow tool,

00:05:44  and click on any one of the letters

00:05:46  to select the entire group,

00:05:48  as we're seeing here,

00:05:49  and then with Align still set to Align to Artboard,

00:05:52  go ahead and click on Horizontal Align Center,

00:05:55  and that'll nudge things over ever so slightly.

00:05:57  Alright, now I'll go ahead on an empty portion

00:05:59  of the artboard to deselect my letters,

00:06:01  and I'll turn off the Guides layer.

00:06:04  And that my friends, is how you round off the corners

00:06:07  of individual characters of type,

00:06:09  in order to create a custom round type style,

00:06:12  here inside Illustrator.

00:01:26  a smooth point as well, I'll go ahead and click on it

00:01:28  to select it and then click on this smooth points icon

00:01:32  in order to get this affect right here.

00:01:34  So, that's one way to work.

00:01:35  I'll go ahead and press Control + Z

00:01:37  or Command + Z on the Mac to undo that change.

00:01:40  Another way to work now, and it's going to give us

00:01:42  very different results, is to round off the corners

00:01:45  by dragging on these round corner widgets,

00:01:48  which will show up at each and every corner point,

00:01:50  except for the end points in an open path outline.

00:01:54  And now notice if I go ahead and drag one of these widgets,

00:01:57  I'm going to round off the corners like so.

00:02:00  And you also have the option, of course,

00:02:01  of just rounding off some corners.

00:02:03  So, for example, let's say I marque these corners right here

00:02:06  and drag back outward, then I'm going to make them

00:02:09  less round, as we're seeing here.

00:02:12  All right, but things get even more interesting

00:02:14  when we start with a more interesting shape.

00:02:16  So I'm going to go ahead and press the Backspace key,

00:02:18  or the Delete key on the Mac, a couple of times

00:02:20  to get rid of that path.

00:02:21  And I'm going to drop down to the shape tool icon

00:02:24  right here.

00:02:25  Click and hold on it and choose the star tool.

00:02:27  And then I'll go ahead and click at the intersection

00:02:30  of my two center guides in order to bring up

00:02:32  the star dialogue box and I came up with these values

00:02:35  right here.

00:02:36  That is, I want to set the first radius value to 300 points

00:02:40  and the second one to 80 points and I'm looking for

00:02:42  a total of 10 star points.

00:02:44  And now I'll go ahead and click OK in order to create

00:02:47  this path outline.

00:02:48  The line weight's a little thick,

00:02:50  so I'll go ahead and take it down to four points,

00:02:52  let's say, and then I'll change the fill by clicking

00:02:55  on this first color swatch up in the control panel

00:02:57  and selecting this shade of orange,

00:02:59  which is R251G176B59,

00:03:03  but obviously, you can go your own way.

00:03:05  All right, now I'll press the Escape key

00:03:07  to hide that panel and I'll click on the word Transform

00:03:10  or on the X, Y, W, or H

00:03:13  on the right side of the control panel.

00:03:15  And I'm going to dial in a rotate value of 18 degrees,

00:03:19  which happens to give me this effect right here

00:03:21  as soon as I press the Tab key.

00:03:24  All right, now I'll go ahead and press the Escape key

00:03:25  in order to hide that panel and I'll switch

00:03:28  to the white arrow tool by pressing the "a" key.

00:03:30  And you can see that we now have all of these

00:03:32  corner widgets here and so, if I drag outward

00:03:35  from one of the interior points,

00:03:37  then I will increase the roundness of the corners.

00:03:40  I'd have to drag inward from one of these exterior points

00:03:43  to increase the roundness or I can drag back outward

00:03:45  to achieve these nice, sharp points.

00:03:48  All right, but what I want to do

00:03:49  is just round the interior corners

00:03:51  and so, I'll go ahead and marque the inside points

00:03:55  in order to select them independently of the outside points.

00:03:58  And now notice that I could convert them to smooth points

00:04:00  if I want to by clicking on the smooth points icon

00:04:03  up here in the control panel and I'd end up with this.

00:04:06  Pretty interesting effect, actually.

00:04:08  It's not what I want however, so I'll go ahead and press

00:04:10  Control + Z or Command + Z on the Mac to undo that change.

00:04:13  And I'll drag down from this top point

00:04:15  until it snaps into alignment with the center guides.

00:04:18  And then I'll go ahead and drag upward

00:04:20  on this corner widget right here

00:04:22  in order to achieve this effect,

00:04:24  which is unlike anything we've really been able to do

00:04:27  in Illustrator in the past.

00:04:28  And if that's not quite what you're looking for,

00:04:31  then you can change this corner's value

00:04:33  up here in the control panel.

00:04:34  And I'm just going to change it to 36 points

00:04:37  and press the Enter key, or Return key on a Mac,

00:04:39  to apply that change.

00:04:41  And that's how you round the corner points

00:04:43  associated with any path out line,

00:04:45  regardless of how you draw it,

00:04:47  using the white arrow tool combined with

00:04:49  the round corner widgets, here inside Illustrator CC.

00:01:48  Now by default, they're all linked together,

00:01:51  so the Chain icon is turned on.

00:02:40  you can drag its widget independently of the others.

00:02:44  So all the other widgets disappear

00:02:45  when this one corner is selected.

00:02:56  I can change this corner's value up here

00:02:58  in the Control panel to something like let's say 100

00:03:02  and press the Enter key, or the Return key on a Mac

00:03:06  Now, notice that we no longer have a single corner point.

00:03:08  We have two modified cusp points.

00:03:12  And yet, they still respond to this round corner widget.

00:03:14  So let's say I want to make this one appear again,

00:03:16  then I would just go ahead and click

00:03:18  on this segment, like so.

00:03:19  Or, you can select one or both of those cusp points

00:03:23  and then go ahead and drag that corner widget

00:03:25  to any setting you like.

00:03:27  And if you drag it all the way toward the points,

00:03:29  then you're going to end up with a radius value of zero.

00:03:32  In other words, you're going to once again

00:03:34  arrive at a sharp corner point.

00:03:36  All right, so that's how the round corner widget works

00:03:39  with rectangles.

00:02:37  So you can do that any old way you like.

00:02:39  And then I'm going to go ahead and create this bar,

00:02:41  this middle bar, by clicking and shift clicking,

00:02:44  and then shift clicking and shift clicking some more,

00:02:47  and then clicking at the end.

00:02:49  All right, now let's combine things together.

00:02:51  And actually, this guy wants to come up

00:02:52  a little bit, doesn't he?

00:02:53  So I'll go ahead and control or command click

00:02:55  on that segment, and then press the up arrow key a few times

00:02:59  in order to raise that bottom edge.

00:03:01  All right, now I'll press the ''v'" key in order to switch

00:03:03  to the black arrow tool.

00:03:05  I'll marquis all of these paths to select them.

00:03:08  And then I'll get my shape-builder tool

00:03:10  and I'll go ahead and drag through all these paths

00:03:13  in order to merge them into a single path outline like so.

00:03:17  All right, now we need to round off some of these corners.

00:03:20  And you can do that by switching to the white arrow tool.

00:03:23  And notice all these little corner widgets right here.

00:03:27  What we want to do is select just some of the corners

00:03:29  and round them, starting with this guy right there.

00:03:32  And then I want to shift marquis these top two points,

00:03:35  shift marquis these bottom two points in the serif

00:03:39  that's coming off the middle bar.

00:03:41  And I want to shift click here and here as well

00:03:44  to select these two points.

00:03:45  And then I'm going to shift click

00:03:47  on this point to select it.

00:03:49  All right, now we want to go ahead and round off

00:03:51  these corners and I'm going to zoom in

00:03:53  so I can better see what I'm doing.

00:03:55  And I'm going to drag in on this corner widget

00:03:58  until I see a radius value of about four points.

00:04:02  So 3.99 is going to work out just fine.

00:04:06  And that goes ahead and rounds off all of the corners

00:04:09  that I just selected.

00:04:10  All right, now I'm going to zoom out a little bit.

00:04:12  And I'm going to click on this corner

00:04:14  and shift click on this one.

00:04:16  And I'm going to drag these guys out as far as they go

00:04:18  until they basically run into the other corners

00:04:21  which happens close to 17 points,

00:04:23  as you can see right there.

00:04:25  And then I'll select this point and shift click on this one.

00:04:28  And I'll drag their widgets all the way out as well

00:04:31  until they stop working.

00:04:33  And we've got to get these guys, too.

00:04:34  So I'll click on this one and shift click on this one.

00:04:38  And I'll drag them out to, let's say,

00:04:41  something around six points.

00:04:43  And I've got 5.98, so that's going to work out just fine.

00:04:47  All right, and that takes care of things.

00:04:49  And it's not a perfect match, but to me

00:04:51  it looks pretty darn good.

00:04:52  All right, now I'm going to press the "v" key

00:04:54  to switch to the black arrow tool.

00:04:56  I'll go ahead and click on my path outline to select it.

00:04:59  And I'll drag it down and to the right,

00:05:00  and then press the alt key, or the option key on the Mac

00:05:03  to duplicate it.

00:05:04  And now we want to make it bigger.

00:05:05  So, I'm going to go ahead and click on the word Transform

00:05:08  up here in the control panel.

00:05:10  And I'll make sure the bottom right point is selected

00:05:13  in the reference point matrix.

00:05:14  And I'll click inside the width value, and I'll press the up

00:05:17  arrow key until I expand this thing so it fills

00:05:20  the entire width of this block.

00:05:23  And then I'll tab to the height value,

00:05:25  and I'll go ahead and zoom out a little bit here

00:05:27  so I can better see what I'm doing.

00:05:28  And now I'll click on Transform again,

00:05:30  click on the height value, and press the up arrow key

00:05:33  until the top of the E hits the top of the block

00:05:37  which happens at 177 points, in my case anyway.

00:05:41  I might be a little different for you.

00:05:43  All right, now I'll go and zoom in on my E,

00:05:45  and I'll press the "a" key to switch

00:05:47  to the white arrow tool.

00:05:48  Click off the path outline, click on it again,

00:05:50  just on the top segment and press the backspace key

00:05:54  or the delete key on the Mac to get rid of it.

00:05:56  And now I'll press the "p" key to switch to my pen tool.

00:05:59  I'll click here in order to reactivate the path.

00:06:02  I'll click up there in order to add a point along the top

00:06:05  of the top E, the first one I created.

00:06:08  And I'll click all the way around in order to close

00:06:10  off that path outline.

00:06:12  All right, we need to make some changes over here, too.

00:06:15  So I'll press the control key or the command key on the Mac

00:06:17  in order to get my white arrow tool on the fly.

00:06:20  I'll click on this anchor point to select it,

00:06:22  and I'll press the backspace key to get rid of it.

00:06:24  Then I'll click on this anchor point to reactivate the path.

00:06:27  I'll click up here in order to connect these two.

00:06:30  And I'll just click here.

00:06:31  Doesn't really matter how things look in the background,

00:06:33  because this shape is going to be hidden.

00:06:35  And now I want to go ahead and create a point

00:06:37  at about this location right there, I think.

00:06:39  And I'll control or command click on this point

00:06:43  to select it, press the backspace key or delete key

00:06:45  on the Mac to get rid of it.

00:06:47  Click here in order to reactivate the path.

00:06:49  Click someplace up here in order to create

00:06:51  a straight segment.

00:06:52  And then click down here in order

00:06:54  to close off the path outline once again.

00:06:57  All right, now I need to take some of these points

00:06:59  and pull them outward a little bit.

00:07:01  And so what I'm going to do is press the "a" key

00:07:03  to switch back to the white arrow tool.

00:07:05  I'll click on this path outline right there,

00:07:07  the initial one, the first E I created, to select it.

00:07:10  And I'll go up to the object menu, choose Lock,

00:07:13  and then choose Selection.

00:07:14  Or I can just press that keyboard shortcut, control 2,

00:07:17  or command 2 on the Mac,

00:07:18  in order to lock that E down.

00:07:20  And that way I can just marquis this entire region

00:07:23  like so, in order to select it.

00:07:25  I don't want to select this point however,

00:07:27  so I'll shift click on it to deselect it.

00:07:29  And then I'll press shift, right arrow, a couple of times

00:07:32  to move these points over like so.

00:07:34  Then I'll click off the points to deselect them,

00:07:36  and I'll click on a straight segment right here

00:07:38  and shift click on this one.

00:07:40  And then press shift right arrow a few times

00:07:43  to nudge this edge out.

00:07:45  But maybe not that far, maybe something more like that.

00:07:48  All right, now we need to create an edge,

00:07:50  right here I believe.

00:07:52  So I'll go ahead and zoom in,

00:07:53  press the "p" key to switch back to the pen tool.

00:07:56  Click right about there to add an anchor point.

00:07:58  I'm trying to figure out what a straight segment

00:08:00  is going to look like.

00:08:01  Then control click or command click on this point,

00:08:04  and press the backspace key or the delete key on the Mac

00:08:06  to get rid of it.

00:08:07  Click here to reactivate the path.

00:08:09  Click right about here in order to align

00:08:12  with that locked path, and then click here

00:08:14  to close off that shape.

00:08:17  All right, now we want to unlock everything

00:08:19  by going up to the object menu

00:08:20  and choosing the Unlock All command.

00:08:23  And now I'm going to press control "y"

00:08:24  or command "y" on a Mac, in order to switch back

00:08:27  to the preview mode.

00:08:28  Press the "v" key to switch back to the black arrow tool.

00:08:31  And I'll right click on the selected path,

00:08:33  choose a range, and then choose Bring to Front

00:08:36  in order to bring that path outline

00:08:37  to the front of the stack.

00:08:39  And then I'll make sure it's filled right, which it isn't.

00:08:41  And so I'll go ahead and change its fill to that second-to-

00:08:44  brightest gray in which all of the RGB values are 230.

00:08:48  And then I'll click on this rear path here to select it.

00:08:52  And I'll change it's fill to this dark gray

00:08:54  in which the RGB values are 77 in order to produce

00:08:57  this effect here.

00:08:58  Then I'll click off the path outline

00:09:01  and I'll press control zero or command zero on the Mac

00:09:03  to center my zoom.

00:09:04  All right, and then in the end I just added some script text

00:09:08  set in the font Spring Standard Light,

00:09:10  and a type size of 86 points, along with a drop shadow.

00:09:14  And that's how you create a real world piece of artwork

00:09:17  using the most precise vector-based drawing tool there is,

00:09:21  the pen tool here inside Adobe Illustrator CC.
