00:05:36  to bring up a list of blend modes,

00:05:39  which are more complicated mathematical

00:05:40  means of blending objects inside Illustrator,

00:05:43  and then choose this last one, Luminosity,

00:05:46  and that will keep the luminous levels of the flower

00:05:49  and blend in the color from the gradient in the background.

00:05:52  At which point I'll go ahead and press the escape key

00:05:54  in order to hide that panel, I'll click off

00:05:56  the art work in order to deselect it,

00:05:58  and I'll zoom out so that we can take in

00:01:54  the hole is three quarters of an inch wide,

00:01:58  and press the tab key to advance to the height value,

00:02:08  and then I'll click OK in order to create that rectangle.

00:02:12  All right, now what we need to do is move it

00:02:16  to switch to my Black Arrow Tool,

00:02:18  and I'll drag its right edge until it snaps

00:02:20  to the right edge of the rounded rectangle.

00:02:23  And then I'll drag its top edge while pressing the shift key

00:02:25  until it snaps into alignment with the top of the rectangle.

00:02:28  All right, now I need to move it into the proper location.

00:02:31  So I'll press the enter key, or the return key on the Mac,

00:02:33  to bring up the move dialog box.

00:02:35  And I'll set the horizontal value to -3/8

00:02:39  in order to move the rectangle 3/8 of an inch to the left.

00:02:43  And then I'll change the vertical value to 1/8

00:02:45  in order to move that rectangle down 1/8 of an inch.

00:02:49  And then I'll click OK to accept that change.

00:02:51  All right, now we want to combine these two shapes

00:02:53  into a compound path, and I'm going to do that

00:02:56  by shift clicking on the big round rectangle,

00:02:58  and then I'll go up to the Object menu,

00:03:00  choose Compound Path and choose Make,

00:03:03  in order to turn the smaller rectangle into a hole.

00:03:06  Now this needs to be another rounded rectangle,

00:03:08  so I'll press the a key to switch to my White Arrow Tool.

00:03:12  I do not want the large rectangle to be selected,

00:03:14  so I'll shift click on it, but if I do,

00:03:17  I also deselect the innermost rectangle

00:03:20  because insofar as Illustrator is concerned,

00:03:22  they're both part of the same path.

00:03:23  If I want to select the innermost one independently,

00:03:26  then I need to press the alt key or the opt key

00:03:29  on the Mac, which gives me a little plus sign

00:03:31  next to my white arrow cursor,

00:03:33  and then I'll click on the path's outline.

00:03:36  So don't click in the brown area.

00:03:37  Alt click or opt click in the outline instead,

00:03:45  in order to get the maximum amount of round as possible,

00:04:15  by clicking on this first color swatch

00:04:17  up here in the control panel and changing it to none

00:04:20  so that we can see our shape in the background.

00:04:22  And I'm also going to change the stroke here

00:04:25  to 6 pt, in order to make it nice and thick.

00:04:28  And now we want to change the stroke attributes as well,

00:04:31  and because we have two strokes, we need to do so

00:04:33  inside the Appearance panel.

00:04:34  So I'll click on the rearmost stroke here,

00:04:37  and I'll click on its color swatch and change it

00:04:39  to that second to darkest shade of brown,

00:04:41  which begins R=96.

00:04:43  And I'll also change its line weight.

00:04:45  Notice that it's currently 2 pt still.

00:04:47  I need to raise it up to 6 pt like so.

00:04:51  And then I'll go ahead and click on the topmost stroke.

00:04:53  I want to reverse its direction,

00:04:54  and I can do that here inside the Gradient panel,

00:04:57  just by changing that angle value to -90 degrees like so.

00:05:01  And I also want to do a better job of blending the gradient

00:05:04  with the stroke behind it,

00:05:06  and so I'm going to click on the word Opacity

00:05:08  below the top stroke.

00:05:09  And I'm going to apply a blend mode

00:05:11  by clicking on the word Normal

00:05:12  and choosing this guy right here, Soft Light.

00:05:15  Now we're going to be reviewing blend modes in detail

00:05:18  when we get to the mastery course,

00:05:19  but for now, just know that soft light

00:05:21  gently enhances the contrast, as we're seeing right here.

00:05:26  So we get a nice colorful blend.

00:05:28  All right, now I'll press the escape key

00:05:30  in order to hide that panel.

00:05:31  And then finally, I need to open up this path outline

00:05:33  down here at the bottom.

00:05:35  So I'm going to press ctrl + shift + a,

00:05:36  or cmd + shift + a on the Mac to deselect this object,

00:05:39  and then I'm going to click on this bottom segment

00:05:42  to select it independently of the rest the shape,

00:05:44  and I'll press the backspace key,

00:05:46  or the delete key on the Mac, to get rid of it.

00:05:49  All right, now if you notice here,

00:05:50  we've got some butt caps going on.

00:05:53  We need them to be round,

00:05:54  so I'll go ahead and click on the top stroke here

00:05:57  inside the Appearance panel, and I'll select a round cap.

00:05:59  And then I have to do that again for the bottom stroke

00:06:02  by clicking on it and then selecting round cap once again.

00:06:05  All right, now let's just go ahead and press ctrl + 0,

00:06:08  or cmd + 0 on the Mac to zoom out.

00:06:10  And let's put the iPhone in the case

00:06:12  by pressing the V key to switch to the Black Arrow Tool.

00:06:15  I'll go ahead and marquee the paths that make up the iPhone

00:06:18  over here on the left hand side of the artboard,

00:06:20  and then I'll go ahead and drag the centerpoint over

00:06:23  until snaps into alignment

00:06:25  with that final pair of guides.

00:06:26  And then I'll press the alt key, or the opt key on the Mac,

00:06:29  in order to create a copy.

00:06:30  All right, now we want to do the same thing with this path,

00:06:33  just the foremost path,

00:06:34  so go ahead and select it and drag it by its centerpoint,

00:06:38  until it snaps into alignment with those guys.

00:06:40  And then press the alt key or the opt key on the Mac

00:06:42  to make a copy of it as well.

00:06:45  And now I'll switch back to my Layers panel

00:06:47  and I'll turn off the guides layer,

00:06:49  and I'll go ahead and press the f key a couple of times

00:06:52  in order to switch to the full screen mode,

00:06:54  and I'll go ahead and zoom in as well.

00:06:57  And that's how you draw a professional quality iPhone,

00:07:00  complete with a leather case using a bunch of basic

00:07:03  rounded shapes here inside Illustrator.

00:03:29  And so I'll go ahead and turn that link off,

00:03:32  my bad I guess,

00:03:33  and I'll change this value to 0.375 like so,

00:03:37  and I'll click OK in order to create that circle.

00:03:40  Alright, now this shape doesn't need any fill,

00:03:42  so I'll click on the first color swatch

00:03:43  in the control panel, change it to None.

00:03:46  And then I'll dial in light weight value of 2 points.

00:03:49  Notice in my case that the stroke

00:03:50  immediately defaults to the gradient,

00:03:52  which is exactly what I want.

00:03:54  And I want it to go in this direction as well,

00:03:56  but if you're not seeing it in that direction,

00:03:58  then go ahead and click on the Stroke

00:04:00  here inside the Gradient panel

00:04:01  and make sure that it's set to -90 degrees.

00:04:04  Alright, now I want to center this circle

00:04:06  exactly inside of this bottom portion of the iPhone.

00:04:10  And the easiest way to make that happen

00:04:12  is to drag the shape by its center point

00:04:15  while pressing the shift key to constrain

00:04:16  the angle of your drag to exactly vertical,

00:04:19  until it intersects with the bottom

00:04:20  of the rounded rectangle like so.

00:04:22  At which point go ahead and release.

00:04:24  And now what you want to do is press the enter key,

00:04:27  or the return key on the Mac,

00:04:28  in order to bring up the Move dialog box.

00:04:31  And that will show you the exact details

00:04:33  of your previous move.

00:04:34  And so now all you need to do

00:04:36  is set the Vertical value to a negative version of itself

00:04:39  and then go ahead and click after the value

00:04:42  and enter /2 in order to divide that value in half.

00:04:46  And that way you're moving back half the distance

00:04:49  you moved a moment ago.

00:04:50  And then go ahead and click the OK button

00:04:52  in order to accept that change.

00:04:54  And then go up to the Opacity value

00:04:56  up here in the control panel and change it to 75%.

00:05:00  And that'll give you an effect that's similar to the stroke

00:05:03  around the outside of the iPhone.

00:05:05  Alright, now I'm going to go ahead

00:05:06  and click off the shape to deselect it.

00:05:08  And I'll scroll upward to the top of the phone.

00:05:11  Alright, now we want to draw the horizontal slit

00:05:14  that serves as the audio port.

00:05:16  As well as the front facing camera.

00:05:18  And I want them to be centered inside of this area,

00:05:21  but we can't really see where the screen starts,

00:05:24  and so I'm going to go up to the View menu

00:05:25  and choose the Outline command,

00:05:27  or I can press ctrl + Y, or cmd + Y on the Mac,

00:05:30  and that way I can better see what I'm doing.

00:05:32  Alright, now I'll switch to the Line Segment Tool,

00:05:34  which you can select from the line tool fly out menu,

00:05:37  and then I'll just go ahead and click any old place

00:05:39  inside my artwork.

00:05:40  And I'll set the Length value once again

00:05:42  to 3/8 of an inch, so 3/8.

00:05:45  And I want the Angle value to be 0 degrees.

00:05:47  At which point I'll click OK in order to create that line.

00:05:50  It does not want to be a gradient however,

00:05:52  so I'll click on the Stroke swatch

00:05:54  and I'll set it to this dark grey right here,

00:05:56  in which all the RGB values are 77.

00:05:59  And now I'll increase the Stroke value to 3 points,

00:06:02  which will make a difference as soon

00:06:03  as we're seeing this stroke in the outline mode.

00:06:06  We're also going to need some round caps,

00:06:08  and so I'll click on the word Stroke

00:06:10  and select the Round Cap from the Cap options here,

00:06:13  and then I'll press the escape key

00:06:14  in order to make that change.

00:06:16  Alright, now I need to be able to center

00:06:18  this stroke on this guide line.

00:06:20  And the easiest way to do that

00:06:21  is to find the center of the line in the first place,

00:06:24  which we can do by going up to the Window menu

00:06:26  and choosing the Attributes command

00:06:28  in order to bring up the Attributes panel.

00:06:31  If all you're seeing is the Overprint options here,

00:06:33  then click on this double arrowhead icon

00:06:35  to expand the panel,

00:06:36  and then click on this second icon, Show Center,

00:06:39  in order to add a center point to the line.

00:06:42  After which point you can go ahead

00:06:43  and hide the Attributes panel.

00:06:45  Alright, now I'm going to switch back

00:06:47  to my black arrow tool,

00:06:48  which of course I can get by pressing the V key,

00:06:50  and I'll drag this line by its center point

00:06:52  until it snaps into alignment with the top of the iPhone.

00:06:56  Now I want it to be centered as well,

00:06:58  so I'm going to go ahead and drag it down,

00:07:00  while pressing the shift key

00:07:01  until it snaps into alignment with the top of the screen.

00:07:05  And then I'll press the enter key,

00:07:07  or the return key on the Mac,

00:07:08  to bring up the Move dialog box

00:07:10  complete with the details of that last movement.

00:07:12  I'll change the Vertical value to negative

00:07:15  and that'll pop that line back to where it came from.

00:07:18  But of course I only want to move it halfway there

00:07:20  and so I'll click after that value

00:07:22  and enter /2 like so.

00:07:24  And that will move the line to exactly where it needs to be.

00:07:28  After which point I'll click OK

00:07:29  in order to accept that change.

00:07:31  Now we need to draw the tiny front facing camera.

00:07:34  And we'll do that, once again, using the Ellipse Tool.

00:07:37  And so I'm going to alt or option + click

00:07:39  right there at the intersection of that line

00:07:42  and that vertical guide.

00:07:43  And this time I'm going to change

00:07:45  both the Width and Height values,

00:07:47  and they are the same this time,

00:07:48  so I think I can safely click on that link icon.

00:07:51  I'm going to change either one of the values

00:07:52  to 3pt for point.

00:07:55  And that way the thickness of this ellipse

00:07:57  will match the thickness of the line weight

00:07:59  assigned to that horizontal line.

00:08:01  And then I'll press the tab key

00:08:03  in order to update both values and I'll click OK.

00:08:06  And we'll end up with this tiny ellipse.

00:08:08  And now I want to move it to the left 3/8 of an inch

00:08:10  and so I'll press the V key to switch back

00:08:12  to my black arrow tool.

00:08:14  And I'll press the enter key in order to bring up

00:08:16  my Move dialog box.

00:08:17  And I'll change the Horizontal value

00:08:19  to -3/8 like so,

00:08:22  and I'll change the Vertical value to 0.

00:08:24  And then I'll go ahead and click OK

00:08:26  in order to move that shape.

00:08:27  And now we just want to swap the fill and the stroke,

00:08:30  and the easiest way to do that is to press shift + X,

00:08:33  and that will give us a dark grey fill and no stroke.

00:08:36  After which point you can press control + Y,

00:08:38  or command + Y, to switch back to the preview mode

00:08:41  and press ctrl + shift + A, or cmd + shift + A,

00:08:44  in order to deselect the artwork.

00:08:46  And now I'll go ahead and zoom out a little bit here,

00:08:49  so that we can take in the entire iPhone.

00:08:51  And that is how you draw the face of an iPhone 6

00:08:54  with an obsessive degree of accuracy

00:08:57  here inside Illustrator.

00:02:10  I'll go ahead and click 'OK' and because I Alt clicked it

00:02:14  or Option clicked on the Mac, I've created a rectangle

00:02:17  that's centered on those guides.

00:02:19  The thing that isn't posted on Apple's site is how round

00:02:23  the corners are.

00:02:24  I basically had to measure that using a ruler.

00:02:27  As I was telling you, a round corner is essentially

00:02:30  an arc of specific dimensions.

00:02:33  If the arc is a half inch tall then we would need

00:02:35  a half inch radius for our rounded corner.

00:02:38  It's pretty much that simple.

00:02:39  As it turns out the round corner for an iPhone

00:02:42  isn't quite a half an inch, it's more like 0.4.

00:02:46  I went ahead and pressed the A key to switch to the

00:02:49  white arrow tool and that allows me access to the

00:02:52  corners option up here in the control panel,

00:02:54  which allows me to change that corner numerically

00:02:56  to 0.4 inches, like so.

00:03:00  Now I'm going to go ahead and zoom in on the iPhone here

00:03:03  by Ctrl+Spacebar clicking, that's a Command+Spacebar click

00:03:06  on the Mac.

00:03:07  Let's go ahead and assign a few fill and stroke attributes.

00:03:09  I'll first change the fill by clicking on the first swatch,

00:03:12  up here in the control panel and clicking on black.

00:03:15  Then I'll increase the line weight value to two points

00:03:17  and I'll change the color of that stroke by clicking on

00:03:20  a second color swatch and changing it to a medium grey

00:03:23  in which all the RGB values are 128.

00:03:27  Now I want to add a little bit of a gradient to this stroke.

00:03:31  I'll go up to the 'Window' menu and choose the

00:03:33  'Appearance' command in order to switch over to the

00:03:35  ' Appearance' panel and I'll click on the

00:03:37  'Add New Stroke' icon down here in the

00:03:39  lower left corner of the panel.

00:03:41  I'll change that new stroke, right there, the one on top

00:03:45  to this white/black gradient, which is one of the

00:03:48  default swatches that are included along with a

00:03:50  basic RGB document.

00:03:52  This gradient happens to be going at the wrong direction

00:03:55  notice that it's going from right to left?

00:03:57  I want it to go from up to down and to make that happen

00:04:01  you want to go to the 'Window' menu and choose the

00:04:03  'Gradient' command.

00:04:05  That brings up the gradient panel as we're seeing

00:04:07  right here.

00:04:08  Next I'll go ahead and click on this double arrow icon

00:04:11  a couple of times to expand the panel so that I can see

00:04:14  this angle value.

00:04:15  I'm going to change that angle to 90 degrees

00:04:18  and press the 'Enter' key or the 'Return' key on a Mac

00:04:21  and you can now see that the gradient goes from black

00:04:22  at the top to white at the bottom.

00:04:25  I still want to be able to see the grey stroke

00:04:28  in the background.

00:04:29  I'll drop down to the 'Appearance' panel,

00:04:31  click on the word 'Opacity' that's part of

00:04:34  the top stroke right there and then I'll change that

00:04:37  opacity value to 50%.

00:04:39  That gives us a 50/50 mix of the gradient

00:04:42  and the grey stroke behind it.

00:04:44  Finally, I want to set this shape off from it's

00:04:46  white background by giving it a drop shadow.

00:04:48  I can do that by going up to the 'Effect' menu,

00:04:51  choosing 'Stylize' and then choosing 'Drop Shadow'.

00:04:54  These are the values I came up with,

00:04:56  an opacity of 75%, the color set to black,

00:05:00  we have an X offset of 0 inches

00:05:02  so the shadows going straight down,

00:05:04  the Y offset is 0.1 inch and then we've got

00:05:07  a blur value of 0.1 inch as well and we can see

00:05:10  what that looks like by turning on a preview checkbox

00:05:12  only we're not seeing anything and that's because I've

00:05:15  made a tiny mistake here.

00:05:17  I'm going to go ahead and click 'OK' however.

00:05:19  The problem is that I had the stroke selected,

00:05:22  so I just applied the drop shadow to the stroke

00:05:24  instead of the entire path.

00:05:26  You can remedy this situation by first, in my case,

00:05:29  reducing the size of the gradient panel so I have

00:05:31  a little more room to work, and then go ahead and click

00:05:34  on that drop shadow to select it, and drag it all the way

00:05:37  to the bottom of the stack, underneath the fill and

00:05:40  directly above that opacity value,

00:05:42  to this point right there.

00:05:44  That will go ahead and assign the drop shadow to the

00:05:47  entire path outline as we're seeing here.

00:05:50  At which point you can go ahead and click off the shape

00:05:52  to deselect it.

00:05:53  That's at least one way to draw with a rounded rectangle.

00:05:56  In the next movie we'll add the screen as well as

00:05:59  the other elements of an iPhone.
