00:01:27 but this tool also has a couple
00:01:29 of surprising tricks up it's sleeve.
00:01:31 So what I'm going to do is press
00:01:32 the control key, or the command key on a Mac,
00:01:34 to temporarily gain access to my last used
00:01:36 arrow tool, which is the black arrow,
00:01:38 and then I'll go ahead and click on
00:01:40 the hexagon that surrounds the month of October.
00:01:43 Now, notice that the fill is active
00:01:45 at the bottom of the toolbox,
00:01:47 and let's say that I want to replace
00:01:48 the fill color with this blue of this stroke.
00:01:51 If I just click on that stroke,
00:01:53 then I'm going to replace the stroke
00:01:55 of the selected shape with blue,
00:01:57 and I'm going to replace the fill with this purple.
00:01:59 That's not what I want, so I'll press
00:02:01 control Z, or command Z on the Mac to undo that change.
00:02:04 Instead what you want to do is shift click,
00:02:07 and that will replace the active attribute
00:02:09 with whatever color you shift click on,
00:02:12 whether it's part of a fill, a stroke,
00:02:15 or an imported image, or what have you.
00:02:18 All right, now I'm going to deselect that shape
00:02:19 by going up to the select menu and
00:02:21 choosing the deselect command,
00:02:23 or you can press control shift A,
00:02:24 or command shift A on the Mac.
00:02:26 And then, I'm going to go over here
00:02:28 to the first swatch in the control panel,
00:02:30 the one that represents the fill,
00:02:31 and I'm going to click on it, and I'm going
00:02:34 to change that fill color to beige.
00:02:36 And notice that the control panel is
00:02:38 telling me that I have no selection,
00:02:40 so in other words, I'm not affecting
00:02:41 any of the objects in my illustration.
00:02:43 All I'm really doing is affecting the
00:02:45 default setting, so if I were to now draw
00:02:48 a rectangle, for example, that rectangle
00:02:51 would come in with a beige fill
00:02:53 and a two point wide stroke.
00:02:55 I don't want that rectangle, however,
00:02:57 so I'm going to press the backspace
00:02:58 key, or the delete key on the Mac,
00:02:59 to get rid of it, and I'm going to
00:03:01 switch back over to the eyedropper tool.
00:03:03 Now, instead of pressing the shift key,
00:03:05 I'm going to press the alt key,
00:03:07 or the option key on the Mac.
00:03:08 Notice that does two things,
00:03:10 first of all, it flips the tool, like so,
00:03:12 and it also fills it, and turns the
00:03:15 eyedropper into a kind of color squirter,
00:03:17 at which point if you were to click,
00:03:20 you will go ahead and assign the
00:03:22 default fill and stroke attributes
00:03:23 that you've established up here
00:03:25 in the control panel to that object.
00:03:28 All right, now let's take a look
00:03:29 at dragging and dropping.
00:03:31 Let's say that I make the stroke active,
00:03:33 which I can do by clicking on it
00:03:34 down here at the bottom of the toolbox,
00:03:36 or I could just press the X key.
00:03:39 And that's going to go ahead and send
00:03:40 me back to the color panel, so I'll
00:03:42 go ahead and click on the swatches tab
00:03:44 so we can see our swatches once again.
00:03:47 If I were to grab this next color,
00:03:48 faded yellow, and drag it and drop it
00:03:51 into the fill of the shape, as I'm doing right now,
00:03:54 then I would change the stroke,
00:03:56 and that's because any time you
00:03:58 drag and drop swatches, you affect the active attribute.
00:04:02 Obviously that's not what I want,
00:04:03 so what I have to do is press control Z
00:04:06 or command Z on the Mac to undo that
00:04:08 change, press the X key to make the
00:04:10 fill active once again, or of course
00:04:12 you could just click on that fill if you want to,
00:04:14 and then drag and drop the faded yellow into that shape.
00:04:18 The advantage of dragging and dropping
00:04:20 incidentally is that the shape
00:04:21 doesn't have to be selected.
00:04:24 All right, now let's take a look at
00:04:25 the final month, December right here,
00:04:27 and let's say I once again make
00:04:29 the stroke active, in which case,
00:04:31 if I drag and drop steel blue onto
00:04:33 December, I'm going to affect the
00:04:35 stroke rather than the fill.
00:04:37 If you run into that problem,
00:04:38 then there's one more keyboard
00:04:40 trick that I can share with you,
00:04:41 and that is that you want to start
00:04:43 by dragging the swatch, and then,
00:04:45 before you release, before you drop it,
00:04:47 go ahead and press and hold the shift key
00:04:49 and then, you'll affect the opposite
00:04:51 attribute as we're seeing here.
00:04:54 And so, there you have it, a few
00:04:56 different ways to assign colors
00:04:58 to fills and strokes, both using
00:05:00 the eyedropper tool and by dragging
00:05:03 and dropping swatches here inside the swatches panel.
