00:02:19  The thing that isn't posted on Apple's site is how round

00:02:23  the corners are.

00:02:24  I basically had to measure that using a ruler.

00:02:27  As I was telling you, a round corner is essentially

00:02:30  an arc of specific dimensions.

00:02:33  If the arc is a half inch tall then we would need

00:02:35  a half inch radius for our rounded corner.

00:02:38  It's pretty much that simple.

00:02:39  As it turns out the round corner for an iPhone

00:02:42  isn't quite a half an inch, it's more like 0.4.

00:02:46  I went ahead and pressed the A key to switch to the

00:02:49  white arrow tool and that allows me access to the

00:02:52  corners option up here in the control panel,

00:02:54  which allows me to change that corner numerically

00:02:56  to 0.4 inches, like so.

00:03:00  Now I'm going to go ahead and zoom in on the iPhone here

00:03:03  by Ctrl+Spacebar clicking, that's a Command+Spacebar click

00:03:06  on the Mac.

00:03:07  Let's go ahead and assign a few fill and stroke attributes.

00:03:09  I'll first change the fill by clicking on the first swatch,

00:03:12  up here in the control panel and clicking on black.

00:03:15  Then I'll increase the line weight value to two points

00:03:17  and I'll change the color of that stroke by clicking on

00:03:20  a second color swatch and changing it to a medium grey

00:03:23  in which all the RGB values are 128.

00:03:27  Now I want to add a little bit of a gradient to this stroke.

00:03:31  I'll go up to the 'Window' menu and choose the

00:03:33  'Appearance' command in order to switch over to the

00:03:35  ' Appearance' panel and I'll click on the

00:03:37  'Add New Stroke' icon down here in the

00:03:39  lower left corner of the panel.

00:03:41  I'll change that new stroke, right there, the one on top

00:03:45  to this white/black gradient, which is one of the

00:03:48  default swatches that are included along with a

00:03:50  basic RGB document.

00:03:52  This gradient happens to be going at the wrong direction

00:03:55  notice that it's going from right to left?

00:03:57  I want it to go from up to down and to make that happen

00:04:01  you want to go to the 'Window' menu and choose the

00:04:03  'Gradient' command.

00:04:05  That brings up the gradient panel as we're seeing

00:04:07  right here.

00:04:08  Next I'll go ahead and click on this double arrow icon

00:04:11  a couple of times to expand the panel so that I can see

00:04:14  this angle value.

00:04:15  I'm going to change that angle to 90 degrees

00:04:18  and press the 'Enter' key or the 'Return' key on a Mac

00:04:21  and you can now see that the gradient goes from black

00:04:22  at the top to white at the bottom.

00:04:25  I still want to be able to see the grey stroke

00:04:28  in the background.

00:04:29  I'll drop down to the 'Appearance' panel,

00:04:31  click on the word 'Opacity' that's part of

00:04:34  the top stroke right there and then I'll change that

00:04:37  opacity value to 50%.

00:04:39  That gives us a 50/50 mix of the gradient

00:04:42  and the grey stroke behind it.

00:04:44  Finally, I want to set this shape off from it's

00:04:46  white background by giving it a drop shadow.

00:04:48  I can do that by going up to the 'Effect' menu,

00:04:51  choosing 'Stylize' and then choosing 'Drop Shadow'.

00:04:54  These are the values I came up with,

00:04:56  an opacity of 75%, the color set to black,

00:05:00  we have an X offset of 0 inches

00:05:02  so the shadows going straight down,

00:05:04  the Y offset is 0.1 inch and then we've got

00:05:07  a blur value of 0.1 inch as well and we can see

00:05:10  what that looks like by turning on a preview checkbox

00:05:12  only we're not seeing anything and that's because I've

00:05:15  made a tiny mistake here.

00:05:17  I'm going to go ahead and click 'OK' however.

00:05:19  The problem is that I had the stroke selected,

00:05:22  so I just applied the drop shadow to the stroke

00:05:24  instead of the entire path.

00:05:26  You can remedy this situation by first, in my case,

00:05:29  reducing the size of the gradient panel so I have

00:05:31  a little more room to work, and then go ahead and click

00:05:34  on that drop shadow to select it, and drag it all the way

00:05:37  to the bottom of the stack, underneath the fill and

00:05:40  directly above that opacity value,

00:05:42  to this point right there.

00:05:44  That will go ahead and assign the drop shadow to the

00:05:47  entire path outline as we're seeing here.

00:05:50  At which point you can go ahead and click off the shape

00:05:52  to deselect it.

00:05:53  That's at least one way to draw with a rounded rectangle.

00:05:56  In the next movie we'll add the screen as well as

00:03:18  And yet, Illustrator is still tracing them

00:03:20  with perfect quarter circles.

00:03:22  Now I'll click on a top point to select it,

00:03:25  and shift+click on the bottom point to select it as well.

00:03:28  And then, I will drag upward on this lower widget

00:03:32  as far as I can until I go way past

00:03:35  the top edge as you're seeing here.

00:03:37  Notice the other widget moved way below the bottom edge.

00:03:41  And I end up with this maximum

00:03:42  corners value of 243.78 points.

00:03:46  And that's going to vary depending on the size of the shape.

00:03:48  But if you're doing exactly what I'm doing,

00:03:50  you'll get that result as well.

00:03:52  And we end up with this kind of modified ellipse.

00:03:55  You may wonder why would you do that?

00:03:57  Why would you ever go through the steps

00:03:59  when you have the ellipse tool,

00:04:01  which gives you better looking results?

00:04:03  And the reason is we can customize our experience

00:04:06  using round corners.

00:04:09  Alright, now I'll alt+click or opt+click

00:04:10  on the outline of the shape

00:04:12  to select the entire thing.

00:04:14  And then I'll double click on any one of these

00:04:16  round corners widgets to revisit the Corners dialog box.

00:04:19  And now notice you can still switch your corner type

00:04:22  to, for example, inverted round

00:04:24  which produces this interesting effect.

00:04:27  And if you switch to Chamfer,

00:04:28  you're going to restore a rectangle.

00:04:30  So again, you can customize

00:04:31  this experience as much as you want.

00:04:33  I'm going to switch back to round,

00:04:35  and now I'm going to switch from absolute,

00:04:37  which is trying to draw those perfect arcs, to relative.

00:04:41  And if you look closely, I'll do that again.

00:04:43  This is the appearance of absolute rounding.

00:04:46  And this is the appearance of relative rounding.

00:04:49  And notice when I switch to relative,

00:04:50  the acute corners become sharper,

00:04:53  they become bigger lumps,

00:04:54  and the less acute corners, these big corners

00:04:57  right here, they flatten out.

00:04:59  And as a result, we get a smoother shape.

00:05:01  At which point I'll click OK in order to accept that change.

00:05:06  Alright now, just for the sake

00:05:07  of getting something done here,

00:05:08  let's turn this shape into an eye

00:05:10  by pressing control+c or command+c on a Mac,

00:05:13  in order to copy the shape to the clipboard.

00:05:16  Now I'll go ahead and shift+click

00:05:17  inside the custom starburst to select it as well.

00:05:20  And then I'll go up to the Object menu,

00:05:22  choose Compound Path and choose Make.

00:05:25  And that moves the shape in front of the text.

00:05:27  So I'll right click somewhere inside the document window,

00:05:29  choose Arrange, and choose Send to Back,

00:05:32  in order to send that shape in back of the text.

00:05:35  And then to paste that shape

00:05:37  that I just copied into the background,

00:05:39  you want to go up to the Edit menu,

00:05:40  and choose Paste in Back,

00:05:42  or you have that keyboard short cut

00:05:44  of Control+b or Command+b on a Mac.

00:05:46  And it looks like we just filled in the path,

00:05:48  but that's because it's filled with the same color

00:05:50  as the starburst, which will become evident

00:05:52  as soon as we rotate it

00:05:54  by clicking on the word Transform

00:05:55  over here on the right side of the Control panel.

00:05:57  Make sure that center reference point

00:05:59  is once again selected,

00:06:00  and change the rotate value to 90 degrees.

00:06:03  And then press the Enter key,

00:06:05  or the Return key on a Mac, to apply that change.

00:06:07  Alright now I think the iris should be purple.

00:06:10  So I'm going to click on the first color swatch

00:06:17  Alright now I'm going to create the pupil

00:06:19  by clicking on the word Transform once again.

00:06:21  And this time I want the link to be on,

00:06:23  so I'm going to go ahead and click on this chain icon,

00:06:25  so that the width and height values are linked together,

00:06:27  and now I'll click on the width value and change it to 70%,

00:06:32  so you want to enter the percent value.

00:06:34  And then, because I want to make a copy of this shape,

00:07:03  And then I'm going to press shift+ up arrow

00:07:07  in order to move the highlight

00:07:09  into the position you see it now.

00:07:11  And now I'll go ahead and click off

00:07:13  the shape to de-select it.

00:07:14  And I'll turn off the guides layer

00:07:16  so we can take in the final version

00:04:15  and then press the Enter key to apply that change

00:04:17  and you'll see all of the corners round uniformly,

00:04:21  as in this case right here,

00:04:23  and Illustrator will also change that Corners value

00:04:26  automatically to the highest value it can,

00:04:29  which in my case is 5.57.

00:04:32  Alright, now notice that once again,

00:04:34  we have some problems with our strokes.

00:04:36  Most of the corners are nice and round,

00:04:37  except for these down here at the bottom of the W,

00:04:40  which are beveled.

00:04:42  And to fix that, click on the word Stroke

00:04:44  up here in the Control Panel,

00:04:45  and change the Corner to Round Join, like so,

00:04:48  and then drop down to Align Stroke here

00:04:52  and click on Align Stroke to Outside

00:04:54  to shift the strokes to the outside of the letters,

00:04:57  which makes them a little more legible.

00:04:59  Alright, now I'm going to press the Escape key

00:05:01  in order to hide that panel,

00:05:02  and now notice that we have a little bit of gap

00:05:04  between the O and the W.

00:05:06  In order to fix that, press Ctrl Shift A,

00:05:09  or Cmd Shift A on the Mac,

00:05:10  in order to deselect the text,

00:05:12  and then click on the W,

00:05:13  and Shift click on the exclamation point

00:05:15  in order to select them independently of the P and the O,

00:05:19  and then press Ctrl K, or Cmd K on the Mac,

00:05:22  to bring up the Preferences dialog box.

00:05:24  And just in case you were working with me

00:05:26  in the previous chapter,

00:05:27  let's take the Keyboard Increment value

00:05:29  back up to 1 point, and then click OK,

00:05:32  and now press the Left arrow key

00:05:34  in order to nudge those letters together,

00:05:36  so that all of the strokes touch.

00:05:38  And then, if you want to make sure

00:05:39  your text is still centered,

00:05:41  then press the V key to switch to the black arrow tool,

00:05:44  and click on any one of the letters

00:05:46  to select the entire group,

00:05:48  as we're seeing here,

00:05:49  and then with Align still set to Align to Artboard,

00:05:52  go ahead and click on Horizontal Align Center,

00:05:55  and that'll nudge things over ever so slightly.

00:05:57  Alright, now I'll go ahead on an empty portion

00:05:59  of the artboard to deselect my letters,

00:06:01  and I'll turn off the Guides layer.

00:06:04  And that my friends, is how you round off the corners

00:06:07  of individual characters of type,

00:06:09  in order to create a custom round type style,

00:06:12  here inside Illustrator.

00:01:32  in order to get this affect right here.

00:01:34  So, that's one way to work.

00:01:35  I'll go ahead and press Control + Z

00:01:37  or Command + Z on the Mac to undo that change.

00:01:40  Another way to work now, and it's going to give us

00:01:42  very different results, is to round off the corners

00:01:45  by dragging on these round corner widgets,

00:01:48  which will show up at each and every corner point,

00:01:50  except for the end points in an open path outline.

00:01:54  And now notice if I go ahead and drag one of these widgets,

00:01:57  I'm going to round off the corners like so.

00:02:00  And you also have the option, of course,

00:02:01  of just rounding off some corners.

00:02:03  So, for example, let's say I marque these corners right here

00:02:06  and drag back outward, then I'm going to make them

00:02:09  less round, as we're seeing here.

00:02:12  All right, but things get even more interesting

00:02:14  when we start with a more interesting shape.

00:02:16  So I'm going to go ahead and press the Backspace key,

00:02:18  or the Delete key on the Mac, a couple of times

00:02:20  to get rid of that path.

00:02:21  And I'm going to drop down to the shape tool icon

00:02:25  Click and hold on it and choose the star tool.

00:02:27  And then I'll go ahead and click at the intersection

00:02:30  of my two center guides in order to bring up

00:02:32  the star dialogue box and I came up with these values

00:02:36  That is, I want to set the first radius value to 300 points

00:02:40  and the second one to 80 points and I'm looking for

00:02:42  a total of 10 star points.

00:02:44  And now I'll go ahead and click OK in order to create

00:02:47  this path outline.

00:02:48  The line weight's a little thick,

00:02:50  so I'll go ahead and take it down to four points,

00:02:52  let's say, and then I'll change the fill by clicking

00:02:55  on this first color swatch up in the control panel

00:02:57  and selecting this shade of orange,

00:02:59  which is R251G176B59,

00:03:03  but obviously, you can go your own way.

00:03:05  All right, now I'll press the Escape key

00:03:07  to hide that panel and I'll click on the word Transform

00:03:10  or on the X, Y, W, or H

00:03:13  on the right side of the control panel.

00:03:30  And you can see that we now have all of these

00:03:32  corner widgets here and so, if I drag outward

00:03:35  from one of the interior points,

00:03:37  then I will increase the roundness of the corners.

00:03:40  I'd have to drag inward from one of these exterior points

00:03:43  to increase the roundness or I can drag back outward

00:03:45  to achieve these nice, sharp points.

00:03:48  All right, but what I want to do

00:03:49  is just round the interior corners

00:03:51  and so, I'll go ahead and marque the inside points

00:03:55  in order to select them independently of the outside points.

00:03:58  And now notice that I could convert them to smooth points

00:04:00  if I want to by clicking on the smooth points icon

00:04:03  up here in the control panel and I'd end up with this.

00:04:06  Pretty interesting effect, actually.

00:04:08  It's not what I want however, so I'll go ahead and press

00:04:10  Control + Z or Command + Z on the Mac to undo that change.

00:04:13  And I'll drag down from this top point

00:04:15  until it snaps into alignment with the center guides.

00:04:18  And then I'll go ahead and drag upward

00:04:20  on this corner widget right here

00:04:22  in order to achieve this effect,

00:04:24  which is unlike anything we've really been able to do

00:04:27  in Illustrator in the past.

00:04:28  And if that's not quite what you're looking for,

00:04:31  then you can change this corner's value

00:04:33  up here in the control panel.

00:04:34  And I'm just going to change it to 36 points

00:04:37  and press the Enter key, or Return key on a Mac,

00:04:39  to apply that change.

00:04:41  And that's how you round the corner points

00:04:43  associated with any path out line,

00:04:45  regardless of how you draw it,

00:04:47  using the white arrow tool combined with

00:04:49  the round corner widgets, here inside Illustrator CC.

00:02:38  and click on this corner for example,

00:02:40  you can drag its widget independently of the others.

00:02:44  So all the other widgets disappear

00:02:45  when this one corner is selected.

00:02:48  And that way, I can modify this corner independently

00:02:51  either by dragging it, like so.

00:02:53  Or, if I know a specific value,

00:02:56  I can change this corner's value up here

00:02:58  in the Control panel to something like let's say 100

00:03:02  and press the Enter key, or the Return key on a Mac

00:03:04  to make that change.

00:03:06  Now, notice that we no longer have a single corner point.

00:03:08  We have two modified cusp points.

00:03:12  And yet, they still respond to this round corner widget.

00:03:14  So let's say I want to make this one appear again,

00:03:16  then I would just go ahead and click

00:03:18  on this segment, like so.

00:03:19  Or, you can select one or both of those cusp points

00:03:23  and then go ahead and drag that corner widget

00:03:25  to any setting you like.

00:03:27  And if you drag it all the way toward the points,

00:03:29  then you're going to end up with a radius value of zero.

00:03:32  In other words, you're going to once again

00:03:34  arrive at a sharp corner point.

00:03:36  All right, so that's how the round corner widget works

00:03:39  with rectangles.
