00:02:28  and so I'm going to go up to the Type menu

00:02:30  and choose the Area Type Options command

00:02:33  and then I'll change the Height value to 70, like so,

00:02:37  and I'll click Okay and that will give me

00:02:39  a little extra room to work.

00:02:40  At which point I'll go ahead and drag that frame up

00:02:43  so that it snaps into alignment

00:02:45  with the bottom right corner of the margin guides.

00:02:48  All right, now we need to go hunting

00:02:49  for a pull quote, which of course happens to be

00:02:51  on the first art board, once again.

00:02:53  So if you're working along with me,

00:02:54  click in the first icon in the bottom left corner of the screen

00:02:58  and then notice this fifth paragraph,

00:03:00  the one that begins with,

00:03:01  It must be inconvenient to be made of flesh.

00:03:04  Go ahead and double click inside of that

00:03:06  in order to switch to the Type Tool,

00:03:08  and now I'm going to very carefully select

00:03:11  all of that paragraph, from quote to quote,

00:03:14  as we're seeing here.

00:03:16  And I'm not triple clicking, by the way,

00:03:17  because I don't want to select the paragraph return.

00:03:20  I just want to select the text.

00:03:22  And now I'll press Control C, or Command C on the Mac,

00:03:25  to copy that text.

00:03:26  All right, now press the Escape key

00:03:28  in order to exit the Text Entry mode,

00:03:30  and I'll click on the last icon down here in the bottom left

00:03:33  corner of the screen, to advance to the third art board,

00:03:36  and then I'll double click inside this caption,

00:03:38  I'll select this text, once again by dragging over it,

00:03:42  and I'll press Control V, or Command V on the Mac,

00:03:45  in order to paste that text, like so.

00:03:48  And I am Control Spacebar, or Command Spacebar clicking

00:03:51  to zoom in here, even though I have active text,

00:03:54  that is possible.

00:03:55  But I want you to notice, that even though I was so careful

00:03:58  not to select a paragraph return

00:04:00  and to copy one group of letters into another,

00:04:03  I have still brought over the old formatting attributes.

00:04:06  And that's why it's so wonderful

00:04:07  that I have that paragraph style.

00:04:09  All right, I'm going to make a couple of edits here.

00:04:11  I'm going to go ahead and select this text right there

00:04:14  and delete it.

00:04:16  And now I'll click in front of the word, However,

00:04:18  and add a quote, like so.

00:04:20  So we're just tidying up this quote,

00:04:21  so it works as a caption.

00:04:23  And now I'll press the Escape key

00:04:25  in order to accept that change.

00:04:27  All right, now we need to apply that paragraph style

00:04:30  by once again going up to the Window menu,

00:04:32  choosing Type, and then choosing Paragraph Styles,

00:04:35  which will bring up the Paragraph Styles panel right here.

00:04:38  Now by all rights, all you should have to do

00:04:40  is click on the Caption Style, in order to apply it.

00:04:44  But notice that we get that little plus sign,

00:04:46  which tells us that we have local overrides,

00:04:48  which is fairly obvious given that nothing really changed.

00:04:52  And so to eliminate those local overrides,

00:04:54  go ahead and press the Alt key,

00:04:56  or the Option key on the Mac,

00:04:57  and click on Caption again

00:04:59  in order to get rid of the plus sign

00:05:01  and properly style that text.

00:05:04  All right, now let's say at this point

00:05:06  or even a few hours later,

00:05:08  you decide that the captions really ought to be blue,

00:05:11  they ought to be red.

00:05:13  In that case you can redefine the style

00:05:15  and here's the easiest way to do that.

00:05:17  Go ahead and double click inside the text once again,

00:05:19  to switch to the Type Tool

00:05:21  and then double click on a word to select it.

00:05:24  And now I'll assign a new color, by this time,

00:05:26  going up to the first swatch up here in the Control Panel,

00:05:30  and I'll click on it to bring up the Swatches Panel,

00:05:33  and then I'll assign that dark shade of red,

00:05:35  which is R193, G39, B45

00:05:39  and we end up with this red text,

00:05:42  as we can see right here.

00:05:44  And it's easier to see, of course,

00:05:45  when I click off the text, like so.

00:05:47  All right, now you want to go ahead and select that text,

00:05:50  and you don't have to select the entire word, by the way,

00:05:53  you can just select a few characters.

00:05:55  But make sure that you're selecting just the red text,

00:05:58  none of the blue, and then return to this Paragraph Styles Panel,

00:06:01  click on its flyout menu icon

00:06:03  and choose Redefine Paragraph Style

00:06:06  and that will go ahead and update all the text to red.

00:06:10  And not only will you update this caption, by the way,

00:06:13  but if I drop down to these navigation icons

00:06:15  in the bottom left corner of the window, and click on first,

00:06:19  you can see that I've updated the other caption, as well,

00:06:22  because it's linked to that same paragraph style.

00:06:26  All right, and now I'm going to go ahead

00:06:27  and zoom in on this page

00:06:29  and I'll turn off the guides as well,

00:06:31  because folks, we are finally done with this document.

00:06:35  And that's how you save a bunch of formatting attributes

00:06:37  as a paragraph style, apply that paragraph style

00:06:40  to other text objects, and redefine that paragraph style

00:06:44  any time you like, here inside Illustrator.

my lowercase letters a little taller.

00:03:01  But it's unlikely that you have that style on your machine,

00:03:04  so I'll just stick with italic.

00:03:06  And then I'll click on the word Character

00:03:08  to bring up my Character panel.

00:03:09  And I'll click on this type size icon

00:03:11  in order to highlight the value, and I'll change it to 16

00:03:14  and then I'll tab over to the leading value,

00:03:17  and I'll change it to 18 like so.

00:03:20  And then I'll press the enter key,

00:03:21  or the return key on the Mac to make that change.

00:03:23  And then finally, I'll go over here to my Swatches panel,

00:03:26  I'll make sure the fill is active,

00:03:29  and then I'll click on the shade of blue, let's say

00:03:31  R=0 G=113 B=188,

00:03:34  in order to change the color of that text like so.

00:03:37  All right, now I have a specific idea in mind

00:03:40  for how big this text frame should be.

00:03:42  And to apply those values, I'll go up to the Type menu

00:03:45  and choose Area Type Options.

00:03:47  And now I'll just go ahead and change the width value

00:03:50  to something very close to what it already is, 284.

00:03:53  So 284 pts.

00:03:55  And then I'll click on the word Height here,

00:03:58  in order to make that value active,

00:04:00  and I'll change it to 52 pts.

00:04:01  And then I'll press the tab key

00:04:03  to advance to the next option,

00:04:05  and that way I can turn on the Preview checkbox

00:04:07  and see my changes applied here on screen,

00:04:10  at which point I'll go ahead and click OK

00:04:12  in order to accept that change.

00:04:14  And now I'll drag that text frame a little bit over

00:04:17  so that it snaps into alignment

00:04:19  with the bottom right corner of the marching guide.

00:04:22  All right, now let's say I want to save

00:04:24  all of these formatting attributes

00:04:25  as what's known as a paragraph style.

00:04:28  And here, you're going to have to give me a leap of faith

00:04:30  because it's not 'til the next movie

00:04:33  that'll prove just how useful these things are.

00:04:35  But if you give me a little bit of latitude here,

00:04:37  go up to the window menu and then go all the way down

00:04:41  until you come across the Type option,

00:04:44  and then that'll bring up the submenu,

00:04:46  as we're seeing right here,

00:04:47  at which point you can choose Paragraph Styles,

00:04:50  in order to bring up the Paragraph Styles panel.

00:04:53  Now the great thing about paragraph styles

00:04:55  versus character styles,

00:04:56  is that paragraph style save more formatting attributes.

00:05:00  So in a nutshell, a character style

00:05:02  will save character level formatting attributes,

00:05:04  such as font and type size and color.

00:05:08  Whereas a paragraph style will save everything,

00:05:11  including what I just told you, as well as alignment

00:05:14  and paragraph spacing and so on.

00:05:16  So when in doubt, when you're saving formatting attributes,

00:05:19  you want a paragraph style.

00:05:21  At which point, you want to create the style

00:05:23  by clicking on this little page icon.

00:05:25  The problem is if you do that,

00:05:27  you'll create an unnamed style

00:05:29  here inside the Paragraph Styles panel,

00:05:31  and then you'll have to turn around and rename it,

00:05:33  which can become very confusing if you have

00:05:35  more than a handful of styles inside this panel.

00:05:38  So what I recommend you do is name the style

00:05:41  as you create it by pressing the alt key,

00:05:43  or the option key on the Mac,

00:05:45  and then clicking on that page icon,

00:05:47  and that'll bring up this ginormous Paragraph Style Options

00:05:50  dialog box, at which point all you have to do

00:05:53  is name the style.

00:05:54  You really don't have to do anything else,

00:05:56  although you can just go ahead and confirm

00:05:57  a few attributes such as Minion Pro, Italic,

00:06:01  size of 16 pt, leading is 18 pt and so forth.

00:06:04  So in other words, everything about this text block

00:06:07  is intact.

00:06:08  At which point you can go ahead and click OK

00:06:10  in order to create that new style called caption.

00:06:13  And now, just for good measure,

00:06:15  you'll want to apply that style to the selected text

00:06:18  by clicking on it.

00:06:20  Now at that point, you may see a little plus sign

00:06:22  after the word caption.

00:06:24  If you do, that indicates that you might potentially have

00:06:27  local overrides, meaning that there might be

00:06:30  some differences between this text and the style.

00:06:33  Just to make sure everything is copacetic,

00:06:36  go ahead and press the alt key or the option key on the Mac.

00:06:40  You shouldn't have to do this, but you do.

00:06:42  Anytime you see a plus sign, go ahead and alt click

00:06:45  or option click on it,

00:06:47  in order to make sure that there are no local overrides

00:06:50  and that everything about this text block matches

00:06:53  this paragraph style.

00:06:54  At which point, you can go ahead and close this panel.

00:06:57  And we are now in a position to reapply

00:06:59  these exact same formatting attributes to future paragraphs,

00:07:02  just as I'll demonstrate in the very next movie.

and the other answer is you get to that great thing

00:02:15  by going to the Type menu and choosing Glyphs

00:02:18  and that brings up the Gylphs panel

00:02:20  as you can see right here.

00:02:21  Now I'm going to go ahead and make the panel larger

00:02:24  by dragging on the bottom edge

00:02:25  as well as the right edge, as we're seeing

00:02:28  and then I'm going to move the panel

00:02:30  over to the right side of the screen

00:02:32  so it's covering up some of the other panels

00:02:34  but it's also remaining free-floating.

00:02:37  Now by default, you're going to see the characters

00:02:39  that are available in the active font .

00:02:41  If you want to switch to a different font

00:02:43  you can do so down here at the bottom of the panel

00:02:46  and you can select a different style as well

00:02:48  but I'm going to stick with Minion Pro Italic

00:02:50  because it gives me access to a huge number of characters.

00:02:54  You can also make these characters larger or smaller

00:02:56  by clicking on these mountain icons.

00:02:58  So the big mountain makes the characters bigger

00:03:00  the little mountain makes them smaller

00:03:03  and then, once you come up with the size

00:03:04  that is comfortable for you

00:03:06  you can just go ahead and browse all the characters

00:03:09  that are available.

00:03:10  For example, there we have a build fraction of one half

00:03:13  and if you want to add that character to your active text

00:03:16  all you have to do is double-click on it.

00:03:19  Let's say you want to build your own character

00:03:21  such as, for example, 3/7

00:03:24  then notice these characters up here

00:03:26  that have little triangles next to them

00:03:28  that means you can click and hold

00:03:30  in order to access alternatives.

00:03:33  Watch up here, I want you to watch this region

00:03:35  right next to the words entire font.

00:03:37  That will tell you which character you're selecting

00:03:39  and so notice at this point I'm seeing the three

00:03:43  which is a numerator, and the numerator

00:03:44  is the top number in a fraction

00:03:46  this guy is the denominator

00:03:48  which would be the bottom number

00:03:49  and then we have a superscript, followed by a subscript

00:03:52  I'm going to go ahead and select the numerator, like so

00:03:55  and then we want to add the fraction character

00:03:57  which is this guy right here

00:03:59  and that's different from the standard slash

00:04:01  if you press the slash character in your keyboard

00:04:03  notice that it doesn't slant nearly enough.

00:04:06  So I'm going to go ahead and press the backspace key

00:04:08  to get rid of that guy,

00:04:09  and I'm going to double-click on this character instead

00:04:12  which gives me the properly slanted fraction character

00:04:15  and then, if I'm looking for 3/7

00:04:17  I'll click and hold on the seven

00:04:19  and choose this guy right here, the seven denominator

00:04:22  in order to create that fraction, like so.

00:04:24  This guy is the multiply symbol, which I love

00:04:27  because it's much different than the standard X

00:04:30  and then we've just got tons and tons of symbols.

00:04:32  Let's say I'm looking for a stylistic alternative

00:04:36  specifically a swash version

00:04:38  of this letter M right there at the end of Baum

00:04:42  then I would just go ahead and select that character

00:04:44  and that will select the M

00:04:46  here inside the big character grid

00:04:48  and then, if I have a little triangle

00:04:50  I can click and hold and select, for example

00:04:53  an ordinal M, which is a superscripted character

00:04:57  or a small cap M is available to me

00:04:59  I also have this swash character

00:05:02  or another way to work

00:05:03  is to go up to the show option, click on it

00:05:07  and switch from Entire Font

00:05:08  to Alternates For Current Selection

00:05:11  and that will just show me

00:05:12  the alternates for this selected character

00:05:15  at which point I could double-click on this swash m

00:05:18  in order to add a little tail to my lower-case m, like so

00:05:21  but I'm more interested in the ornaments.

00:05:24  So I''m going to go ahead and click

00:05:26  once again, on the Show pop-up menu

00:05:29  and I'll switch to the Ornaments option

00:05:31  and then I'm just going to see the ornaments

00:05:33  that are available in this font

00:05:35  and now I'll just go ahead and select

00:05:36  this bunch of characters here that I want to replace

00:05:39  and I'll double-click on this leaf ornament right there

00:05:41  in order to add it to my text.

00:05:43  Now I want it to be a little larger

00:05:45  so I'll go ahead and select it

00:05:47  and I'll press ctrl + shift + on a Mac

00:05:51  three times in a row, to increase the type size

00:05:55  to 22 points as we're seeing up here in the control panel.

00:05:58  Alright now let's go ahead and make my glyphs panel

00:06:00  a little smaller here

00:06:01  and drag it down so that I can see my swatches panel

00:06:04  my fill is still active, so I'll just go ahead

00:06:06  and click on this deep red R193 G39 B45

00:06:12  in order to change the color of that leaf, like so.

00:06:15  Alright now I'm going to copy it by pressing ctrl + C

00:06:17  or cmd + c on a Mac

00:06:19  and then I'll select this other bulltet

00:06:20  and I'll paste the leaf character into this place

00:06:22  by pressing ctrl + v or cmd + v on the Mac.

00:06:26  Alright now there's just one more thing I want to do

00:06:28  I'll go ahead and alt + drag my document over

00:06:31  I want to replace this c in my name

00:06:33  the first c in McClelland, with a superscripted

00:06:36  or properly ordinal c

00:06:38  and so I'll go ahead and select that c

00:06:40  and then I'll change the Show option here

00:06:43  to Alternates For Current Selection

00:06:45  and I only have two alternates

00:06:47  the one that I'm using, the standard lower-case c

00:06:49  and the small cap c

00:06:51  and so if I double-click on it

00:06:52  I'm going to see a small designer version

00:06:54  of a capital letter

00:06:55  as we're seeing right there.

00:06:57  That's not really the one I want however,

00:06:58  so I'll go ahead and press ctrl + z

00:07:00  or cmd + z on the Mac to undo that change.

00:07:03  The moral of the story is here

00:07:05  that you're not always going to see

00:07:06  the glyph that you're looking for

00:07:09  and that's because the Glyphs Panel is limited

00:07:11  to those characters that are actually available

00:07:13  inside any given font

00:07:15  but of course when you run into a wall

00:07:17  there's always a solution.

00:07:19  What I'm going to do is close the Glyphs Panel

00:07:21  by clicking on this close box

00:07:23  and then I'm going to click on the word character

00:07:25  up here on the control panel

00:07:26  in order to bring up the character panel

00:07:28  and I want to be able to see what I'm doing

00:07:30  at the same time.

00:07:31  So I'm going to just alt + drag my page over a little bit

00:07:34  like so, and then I'll click on the word character again

00:07:38  notice this guy right here

00:07:39  this option that says set the baseline shift

00:07:42  that allows you to either raise or lower the character

00:07:46  with respect to it's baseline

00:07:49  which is the imaginary horizontal line

00:07:51  upon which all the characters rest.

00:07:53  So what I'm going to do is click inside that value

00:07:56  and notice if I press the down arrow key

00:07:58  that I lower that character, with respect to the baseline

00:08:02  but if I press the up arrow key

00:08:04  then I raise that character

00:08:06  and once I achieve a value of three points

00:08:08  everything looks great.

00:08:09  At which point I'll press the enter key

00:08:11  in order to accept that value and dismiss the panel

00:08:14  and then I'll press the escape key

00:08:15  in order to exit the text entry mode

00:08:18  and we end up with this nice looking ordinal version

00:08:21  of the the c right there

00:08:22  as well as these wonderful leaf ornaments

00:08:25  and that swash version of the lower-case m

00:08:28  and that's how you work with the glyphs panel

00:08:30  as well as the baseline shift formatting attribute

00:08:34  here inside Illustrator.

00:01:24  As well as a heart, I believe is another one,

00:01:28  right here, a heart, and now I'll go ahead and click

00:01:31  on character and choose no break once again.

00:01:34  So that's a pretty easy solution.

00:01:36  Really it's all about just trying to keep

00:01:38  an eye out for those orphans.

00:01:39  For widows, the easiest solution

00:01:41  is to make a slight adjustment to the leading.

00:01:44  So, for example, I'm going to go ahead

00:01:47  and select up this text right here.

00:01:49  So all the way from the tin woodman

00:01:52  at the top of the second column,

00:01:53  down to the end of the second to last paragraph,

00:01:57  right above the widow, and now what you want to do

00:02:00  is click on the word character one again

00:02:01  to bring up the character panel.

00:02:03  And instead of increasing the leading to 18,

00:02:06  or something like that, let's just take it up to 17.5.

00:02:10  I generally find that very small changes

00:02:12  make a big difference, and then you can press

00:02:14  the enter key, or the return key on the Mac,

00:02:16  to affect that change.

00:02:17  And notice that went ahead and bumped that line up

00:02:20  to the next column.

00:02:22  Alright now I'm going to press the escape key

00:02:23  in order to edit the text editing mode,

00:02:25  and I'll press shift page down

00:02:27  to advance to the last art board,

00:02:29  and you can see at the top of the second column

00:02:32  we have what is easily the worst kind of widow.

00:02:35  Just a couple of words all by themselves.

00:02:38  And so what we need to do is get more text

00:02:41  into that last column on the second art board,

00:02:44  and so i'm going to double click

00:02:45  in the word wicked right here,

00:02:46  and I'm going to click after the D

00:02:48  to set the blinking insertion marker,

00:02:50  and now I'll go ahead and select

00:02:52  the second art board again

00:02:54  from the bottom left corner of the window,

00:02:56  and i'll shift click on the quote

00:02:58  right before I don't know enough.

00:03:01  And that way we've selected all of the text

00:03:03  in the third column, as well as one additional line

00:03:06  on the next art board, and now I'm going to click

00:03:09  on the word character to bring out the character panel

00:03:11  once again, and I'm going to take the leading value down

00:03:14  to 16.5, so half a point less than it was.

00:03:18  Now press the enter key, or the return key on the Mac,

00:03:21  and you can see that the line there upon wicked

00:03:23  has now scooted to this art board.

00:03:25  And so if I were to click in the word wicked

00:03:28  and press the down arrow key,

00:03:29  in order to advance to that third art board,

00:03:32  and I'll just go ahead and scroll down to it

00:03:34  using the scroll wheel on my mouse.

00:03:36  We can see now that those two words after her

00:03:38  are now fitting at the bottom of the first column.

00:03:42  Alright, now we've got a widow at the bottom

00:03:44  of the second column, so what we need to do

00:03:47  is triple click and hold on that last paragraph,

00:03:50  and drag up to the first paragraph in this column,

00:03:53  like so, so that all the lines except the widow are selected

00:03:57  and then click on the word character once again,

00:03:59  and set the leading value half a point higher,

00:04:01  to 17.5, and then press the enter key,

00:04:04  or the return key on the Mac,

00:04:05  to invoke that change.

00:04:07  And the great thing about these half point differences

00:04:09  is you just can't see it.

00:04:11  They're not gonna interfere with the legibility

00:04:13  or the consistency of your type.

00:04:15  Alright now finally we've got another widow

00:04:18  in the form of her right here.

00:04:19  So I'm going to double click and hold

00:04:21  in order to select the word Mary,

00:04:23  and then I'll click the word character,

00:04:25  I'll click in the fly out menu icon,

00:04:26  and I will choose no break

00:04:28  in order to move both of those words down to the last line.

00:04:31  And finally I'll press the escape key

00:04:33  and click off of the text to deselect it.

00:04:35  And that's how you very effectively

00:04:37  deal with orphans and widows

00:04:39  here inside Illustrator using a combination

00:04:42  of the no break command and a half point variation,

00:04:45  one direction or the other, in leading.

And that will paste the tin man on his own tin man layer

as we're seeing here inside the Layers Panel.

Now, what I want you to do is go ahead and drag this guy,

00:01:23  so that the top of his head more or less aligns with

00:01:26  this second horizontal guideline.

00:01:29  And we're aligning his funnel cap

00:01:31  to the right edge of the margin guide.

00:01:33  And that might be a little too far to the right,

00:01:35  so I'll just press the Left arrow key

00:01:37  to nudge him a little bit to the left.

00:01:39  All right, now, I'm going to drag this layer

00:01:41  below the text layer, and I'm going to lock it as well,

00:01:44  so that we don't end up modifying any of his many parts.

00:01:48  All right, now, what you might think is that

00:01:50  we go ahead and assign the Text Wrap command

00:01:52  that we saw in the previous movie, directly to the tin man.

00:01:55  But, first of all, he'd have to be on the same layer

00:01:58  as the text, which would be a nightmare.

00:02:00  And secondly, the text would start wrapping

00:02:02  inside of his legs and under his arm,

00:02:05  so we'd end up with some problems.

00:02:07  We want a much simpler solution,

00:02:09  and here's how we're going to pull it off.

00:02:10  Go ahead and click on the text layer to make it active,

00:02:13  and then, once again grab the Rectangle Tool,

00:02:16  and just go ahead and draw a rectangle

00:02:18  around that third column like so.

00:02:20  Now, we don't want a fill or a stroke,

00:02:22  so go up to the Control Panel and change the Fill to "None."

00:02:27  And then, click on the second swatch,

00:02:28  the one that represents the stroke,

00:02:30  and change it to "None" as well.

00:02:32  All right, now, with the rectangle selected,

00:02:35  go to the Object menu, choose "Text Wrap" and choose "Make."

00:02:38  And that's all there is to it.

00:02:40  That just goes ahead and wraps the text around

00:02:42  that third column so it drops to the next start board.

00:02:45  All right, now we need to draw

00:02:46  some sort of shape around his arm.

00:02:48  And the easiest tool for this purpose is located

00:02:51  directly below the Rectangle tool.

00:02:53  You click and hold on the paintbrush,

00:02:55  and you choose the strangely named Blob Brush Tool.

00:02:58  Now, what you want to do is press the "Enter" key

00:03:00  or the "Return" key on the Mac

00:03:02  to bring up the Blob Brush Tool Options.

00:03:04  And just change the size value to 50 pt.

00:03:07  You don't have to do anything else. And then, click "OK."

00:03:10  All right, now I want to deselect that rectangle

00:03:13  by going to the Select menu and choosing

00:03:15  the "Deselect" command, or you can press

00:03:17  a keyboard shortcut of "Ctrl+Shift+A"

00:03:19  or "Command+Shift+A" on the Mac.

00:03:21  And I'm now going to change the fill color to, let's say

00:03:24  "RGB Red," just so we can really see what we're doing.

00:03:27  And now, I'm going to begin painting

00:03:29  inside of this guy's hand.

00:03:32  So, you want to start by painting around his hand like so.

00:03:35  And then paint up his arm all the way to his shoulder,

00:03:38  and then come down his hip basically to his knee.

00:03:42  And then, I want you to come back over

00:03:44  and then up like so to make this kind of

00:03:47  blobby shape right here.

00:03:49  And then, make sure that you paint the interior

00:03:51  as well as you can, just so that your filling

00:03:53  as much with red as possible.

00:03:55  In other words, you don't want to be seeing any cracks.

00:03:58  And then, just go ahead and release,

00:04:00  in order to create that blobby shape.

00:04:03  All right, now, press the "V" key to switch back

00:04:05  to the Black Arrow Tool, and click on that

00:04:08  path outline to select it.

00:04:09  And if you end up seeing the word "Group" over here

00:04:11  on the far left side of the Control Panel,

00:04:14  then go up to the Object menu and choose

00:04:15  the "Ungroup" command.

00:04:17  At which point, you'll probably see mixed objects.

00:04:20  Just go ahead and shift click on the outline

00:04:21  of the path to deselect it.

00:04:23  And you should see that a few things remain selected.

00:04:26  At which point, just go ahead and press the "Backspace" key

00:04:28  or the "Delete" key on the Mac to get rid of

00:04:31  those little extras.

00:04:32  Now, click on the shape again, and this time

00:04:35  it should either read "Path" or "Compound Path,"

00:04:37  which is just fine.

00:04:39  All right, now, what you want to do is go up to

00:04:41  the Object menu, choose "Text Wrap," and choose "Make."

00:04:44  And that will create a text wrap around this shape.

00:04:47  You want to return to the Object menu, choose "Text Wrap,"

00:04:51  and choose "Text Wrap Options."

00:04:55  And then, go ahead and turn on the "Preview" checkbox

00:04:57  so you can see what you're doing.

00:04:58  And increase that offset value by pressing the Up arrow key,

00:05:02  so just click in the value and press Up arrow

00:05:05  until you get a good-looking wrap.

00:05:07  Until, in other words, the text looks good.

00:05:09  Which happens for me at an offset value of 10 pt,

00:05:12  at which point out go ahead and click the "OK" button

00:05:14  in order to accept that change.

00:05:16  And now, click on this first swatch up here

00:05:18  in the Control Panel and change it to "None,"

00:05:20  so that we are not actually seeing that red blob.

00:05:24  And now, click off the path outline to deselect it.

00:05:27  All right, now, the spacing of the text could

00:05:28  potentially be a little better.

00:05:30  And to make it so, we just have to

00:05:31  apply a couple of changes.

00:05:33  So, just go ahead and double-click anywhere

00:05:35  inside the body copy to automatically switch

00:05:37  to the Type Tool and position the blinking insertion marker.

00:05:41  Then press "Ctrl+A" or "Command+A" on the Mac to select

00:05:44  all the text across the three threaded text frames.

00:05:47  And then, what I want you to do is click the word

00:05:49  "Paragraph" up here in the Control Panel.

00:05:52  And we're going to make two changes,

00:05:54  both of which are available from the Fly Out menu.

00:05:56  So, click the Fly Out menu icon in the upper right corner

00:05:59  of the Paragraph Panel, and then choose

00:06:02  the "Hyphenation" command.

00:06:03  And notice that Hyphenation

00:06:04  isn't even turned on at this point.

00:06:07  So, go ahead and turn on that checkbox.

00:06:09  I want "Words Longer Than" value of 4 letters.

00:06:12  That way, even short words will get hyphenated.

00:06:15  And we want to better spacing as opposed to fewer hyphens.

00:06:19  So, go ahead and move that slider triangle

00:06:21  a couple of tick marks over to the left.

00:06:24  And now, turn on the Preview checkbox,

00:06:26  and you should see a little bit of hyphenation

00:06:29  occurring onscreen.

00:06:30  For example, "I've been groaning" has now been hyphenated.

00:06:34  And "with a little cry of surprise" is hyphenated as well.

00:06:37  At which point, go ahead and click the "OK" button

00:06:39  in order to apply that change.

00:06:41  Now, this one's a little technical.

00:06:43  But you want to click on that Fly Up menu icon again,

00:06:46  and you want to switch from "Adobe Single Line Composer"

00:06:48  that looks at one line at a time when figuring out

00:06:52  how to space the justified paragraphs.

00:06:55  And you want to switch to "Adobe Every Line Composer,"

00:06:58  which looks at the entire story as it's figuring out

00:07:01  the spacing of any single justified line.

00:07:04  And that is going to give you some much better spacing

00:07:07  as we're seeing right here.

00:07:09  At which point, you can go ahead and press the "Esc" key

00:07:12  in order to hide the Paragraph Panel,

00:07:13  and then press the "Esc" key again

00:07:15  to exit the text editing mode and then just

00:07:18  click off of your text to deselect it.

00:07:21  And that's how you wrap text around a graphic.

00:07:24  As well as achieve the best possible character spacing.

00:07:27  By turning on Hyphenation, that's very important.

00:07:30  As well as switching to the "Every Line Composer,"

00:07:34  here inside Illustrator.
