00:01:31  and that again represents the thickest point in the stroke.

00:01:34  All right, now I'll go ahead and double click

00:01:37  on this left-hand point right there,

00:01:38  and I'll change its total width value to 24 pt like so,

00:01:42  and then click OK.

00:01:43  And now we're just going to go back and forth

00:01:45  between those two values.

00:01:46  So I'll click on this bottom anchor point,

00:01:48  change it to 10 pt and press the enter key,

00:01:50  or the return key on the Mac,

00:01:52  at which point you may notice that Illustrator

00:01:54  has helpfully created a bunch of width points for you

00:01:57  over here on the right-hand side of the shape.

00:02:00  Unfortunately, they're not in the right location,

00:02:02  so what you don't want to do is double-click

00:02:04  on one of these anchor points like so

00:02:06  and then enter 10 pt like we've been doing

00:02:08  because you'll end up creating this unfortunate effect here.

00:02:11  In which case, just go ahead and click

00:02:13  on that width point that you don't want

00:02:15  and press the backspace key or the delete key on the Mac

00:02:17  to get rid of it.

00:02:18  All right, now I'll go ahead and hover

00:02:20  over the path outline.

00:02:21  That's very important, by the way,

00:02:22  that you hover over that path outline

00:02:24  in order to see those width points,

00:02:26  and then grab this guy right here that Illustrator

00:02:28  created for you, and drag it down

00:02:30  so it snaps into alignment with the anchor point,

00:02:32  then double-click on it and change that width value to 24.

00:02:35  And then go ahead and grab this guy,

00:02:37  drag him until he snaps into alignment

00:02:39  with the anchor point,

00:02:40  double-click on it, change its width value to 10

00:02:43  and click OK.

00:02:45  And then I'm going to zoom in on the center portion

00:02:47  of the infinity symbol, and notice right there,

00:02:50  we have a width point.

00:02:51  And you may recall, this is that same point

00:02:53  that the arrowheads were pointing to,

00:02:56  and that's because this is the beginning

00:02:57  of the path outline.

00:02:59  And so you always have a width point at this location.

00:03:02  So go ahead and double-click on it

00:03:03  and change its width value to 10,

00:03:06  and then we should see, yes, Illustrator went ahead

00:03:09  and created one for me,

00:03:10  and this one has perpendicular handles.

00:03:12  Notice that.

00:03:13  So these handles here, go down into the right

00:03:15  where these go down into the left.

00:03:17  And that indicates that it affects the other segment,

00:03:20  the one that's crossing.

00:03:21  So go ahead and double-click on it

00:03:23  and change its width value to 24 this time

00:03:25  in order to make it nice and thick.

00:03:27  All right, now we need to zoom out

00:03:29  and check that illustrator has not messed with

00:03:31  the left-hand portion of the shape, which it has

00:03:33  unfortunately.

00:03:35  It went and added the total of three handles.

00:03:37  And to tell which one is good and which one is bad,

00:03:39  just hover over it.

00:03:40  So this one has a width of 10, that's good.

00:03:42  This one has a width of 9.691, that's bad.

00:03:46  So I'll click on it to select it and press the backspace key

00:03:49  or the delete key on the Mac to get rid of it,

00:03:51  and that also gets rid of that lump

00:03:53  that Illustrator created.

00:03:55  Notice this area is really lumpy

00:03:57  thanks to the fact that right next to the width point

00:03:59  that I created, that has a width of 24 points,

00:04:02  we've got one that has a width of 23.944, which is bad.

00:04:06  So I'll go ahead and click on it to select it,

00:04:08  and press the backspace or delete key to get rid of it.

00:04:10  And then this guy right there is wrong too, 10.537.

00:04:13  I never created anything like that, so I'll click on it

00:04:16  and press the backspace key or the delete key on the Mac

00:04:18  to get rid of it.

00:04:19  And then I'll just hover my cursor over the path

00:04:22  to make sure that I'm seeing

00:04:23  three width points on the right,

00:04:24  three over here on the left and two in the middle,

00:04:26  and that's exactly what I want.

00:04:28  At which point, I'll go ahead and press the V key

00:04:30  to switch back to the Black Arrow Tool.

00:04:32  And notice now that we have an infinity symbol

00:04:35  that does not look like a sideways eight.

00:04:37  It looks like it matches the actual stroke weights

00:04:40  of Adobe Caslon Pro.

00:04:42  All right, now let's go ahead and save it off

00:04:44  as a variable width profile.

00:04:46  You can see a preview of the profile up here

00:04:48  in the control panel, but it has not yet been saved.

00:04:51  So just go ahead and click on that option

00:04:53  to bring up this pop-up menu.

00:04:55  And then click on this Add to Profiles icon

00:04:57  and let's go ahead and call this guy Trio,

00:05:00  after this trio of lumps, and then click OK.

00:05:03  All right, now let's test out the profile

00:05:05  and make sure it looks like this line right here

00:05:08  by clicking on a line above it and then, once again,

00:05:11  clicking on the Variable Width Profile options,

00:05:13  scrolling down to the bottom

00:05:14  and clicking on the width profile that we just created.

00:05:16  And at first, it's going to look like it's not working right

00:05:19  but that's because the line width is set to 1 pt,

00:05:22  meaning that at its thickest,

00:05:24  the stroke is just 1 pt wide.

00:05:26  And so if you want to see it properly,

00:05:27  you need to take that line weight up to our desired maximum,

00:05:31  which is 24 points, and then press the enter key

00:05:33  or the return key on the mac, and everything

00:05:35  should look great.

00:05:37  All right, now the thing about width profiles

00:05:39  is that unlike swatches and selections

00:05:41  that you save here in the Select menu,

00:05:43  they are not part of the active document.

00:05:46  Rather, they are global preferences

00:05:48  that transfer automatically between one document

00:05:51  and another.

00:05:52  So if I go ahead and switch documents like so,

00:05:54  then let's say I want to stroke these hills,

00:05:57  I'll go ahead and click on one of the hills

00:06:00  and shift click on the other with my Black Arrow Tool,

00:06:02  and I just need to establish a base stroke here.

00:06:05  So I'll go ahead and change the line weight value to 20 pt,

00:06:08  and press the enter key or the return key on the Mac,

00:06:10  and I will get two uniform strokes as we're seeing here.

00:06:13  And now I'm going to shift click on this green stroke,

00:06:15  which, as you may recall, is 30 pt thick.

00:06:18  And it already has a variable width stroke.

00:06:20  So the profile option up here is going to appear blank.

00:06:23  That's okay, you can override it just by clicking

00:06:26  on that blank field and choosing Trio once again

00:06:29  in order to assign that profile to all three path outlines.

00:06:32  And then if you want the strokes to match

00:06:34  so that we're not seeing this difference

00:06:36  between the green and black down here,

00:06:38  then go ahead and click on the second color swatch

00:06:40  up here in the control panel and select black.

00:06:42  And now, I'll go ahead and press the escape key

00:06:45  in order to hide that panel,

00:06:46  and I'll press ctrl + shift + a or cmd + shift + a

00:06:49  on the Mac to deselect my paths.

00:06:52  And that's how you create your own variable width profile

00:06:54  that you can assign to any path outline

00:06:57  inside of any document that you like.

Alright, now, one of the great things

about Variable Width, especially the fact that you can

00:00:04  adjust strokes asymmetrically, is that it gives you

00:00:07  a new control over the way that you align the stroke

00:00:10  to the path outline, that goes well beyond this

00:00:13  Align Stroke function that we saw a few movies back.

00:00:16  And it's just as applicable to open path outlines

00:00:19  as closed ones.

00:00:20  So, let's say for example, that I press the a key

00:00:23  to switch to the white arrow tool,

00:00:25  and I click on this upper right segment

00:00:27  associated with this ellipse here.

00:00:29  And notice, over here in the Stroke panel,

00:00:31  how the Stroke is currently aligned to the outside

00:00:34  of this path outline.

00:00:36  And so, I'll go ahead and click on this segment

00:00:37  and then shift-click on this this one,

00:00:39  and shift-click on this one, so that

00:00:41  the upper right segments are selected in each one

00:00:44  of the ellipses, and then I'll press the backspace key,

00:00:47  and I lose that alignment.

00:00:49  Illustrator goes ahead and automatically

00:00:51  switches my Align Stroke option back to

00:00:54  Align Stroke to Center.

00:00:56  But that's OK, because I can modify this setting

00:00:58  using Variable Width stroke.

00:01:00  And so, I'll just click off the paths to deselect them.

00:01:03  And then, I'll switch to the Width Tool,

00:01:05  which, once again, you can get by pressing shift + w.

00:01:08  And now, I'll just go ahead and double-click

00:01:09  on this top endpoint in this left-hand path.

00:01:12  And now, I'll change this Side 1 setting to 20 points,

00:01:15  and I'll change Side 2 to 0.

00:01:18  So, in other words, I've distributed all of the stroke,

00:01:21  all 20 points of it, to the outside of the path outline,

00:01:25  at which point I'll click OK to accept that setting.

00:01:27  And then, I'll double click on the other endpoint

00:01:30  for that same path, and I'll change its Side 1 setting

00:01:32  to 20 points, and I'll change Side 2 to 0 point, once again,

00:01:36  and then I'll click OK for that.

00:01:38  Alright, now, I'll press the v key to switch

00:01:40  to the black arrow tool, and I'll go ahead and marquee

00:01:43  the other two path outlines.

00:01:45  And now, I'll grab my eyedropper, which, once again,

00:01:47  I can get by pressing the i key.

00:01:50  And I'll go ahead and click on that first path outline,

00:01:52  the one on the left-hand side,

00:01:54  in order to lift its attributes and everybody

00:01:56  is aligned once again.

00:01:58  And it gets headier still.

00:02:00  I'll go ahead and collapse my Stroke panel

00:02:02  just a little bit, so that I have a little more room

00:02:05  for my Layers panel, down here

00:02:07  in the bottom right corner of the screen.

00:02:08  And I'll turn on the Spirals layer right here.

00:02:11  And I'll press the v key to switch

00:02:12  to the black arrow tool, and I'll go ahead and click on

00:02:15  any one of the spirals.

00:02:17  Notice that their light blue strokes are centered

00:02:19  on the path outline, as by default.

00:02:22  And then, I'll go up to the select similar objects icon,

00:02:24  up here in the Control panel, I'll click on

00:02:27  the down-pointing arrow head, and I'll just go ahead

00:02:29  and choose All or Stroke Color.

00:02:31  Either one's gonna work fine.

00:02:32  And that'll select all the spirals.

00:02:34  And now, I'll switch back to the eyedropper tool,

00:02:36  and I'll go ahead and click on one of the purple paths,

00:02:39  and that aligns everybody beautifully.

00:02:42  And now, I'll just press control + a, or command + a

00:02:46  on the Mac, in order to select all the path outlines,

00:02:49  and I'll go over to the Stroke panel right here,

00:02:51  and I'll switch the Caps option to round cap,

00:02:54  which goes ahead and fills in the gaps up there

00:02:57  at the top of the path outlines.

00:02:59  After which point, I can go ahead and press the v key

00:03:01  to switch back to my black arrow tool.

00:03:03  And I'll click off the paths to deselect them.

00:03:06  And so, thanks to your ability to asymmetrically

00:03:09  adjust strokes along their path outlines,

00:03:11  using the Width Tool, you can align strokes to path outlines

00:03:15  with this kind of precision control,

00:03:18  here inside Illustrator.

like so, and then I can go ahead and add another width point  farther down the slope.

The thing is, let's say I have a specific width value in mind.

In that case, I would go ahead and double-click

00:01:44  on that width point to bring up

00:01:46  the Width Point Edit dialog box,

00:01:48  and I would enter that value into the total width field,

00:01:51  in which case Illustrator will by default

00:01:53  go ahead and evenly distribute that width value

00:01:56  to both sides of the path outline.

00:01:59  And notice by the way that we do have a delete button,

00:02:01  so I can go ahead and delete this point

00:02:04  that I just created.

00:02:05  I don't want to do that so I'll just go ahead and click OK

00:02:08  to apply my change.

00:02:09  All right, now let's say I want to edit that very first

00:02:12  width point.

00:02:13  I'll go ahead and double-click on it

00:02:14  to bring out the Width Point Edit dialog box.

00:02:17  And noticed that you can enter the sides independently

00:02:20  if you want to.

00:02:21  I could change, for example, Side 1 to 15 pt,

00:02:24  which will go ahead and extend this side, apparently.

00:02:27  And then I'll change Side 2 to 5 pt

00:02:30  in order to reduce its size.

00:02:32  And then from this point on,

00:02:34  if you click on this chain icon

00:02:36  to link these two values together,

00:02:37  then modifying one of the values will change the other

00:02:40  not to the same value but to the same extent

00:02:44  as we're seeing right here.

00:02:46  Another thing I want you to see is how the delete button

00:02:49  is dimmed, and that's because you have to have width points

00:02:53  at either end of an open path.

00:02:56  And so I'll just go ahead and click OK to apply that change.

00:03:00  All right, now let's say I want to duplicate

00:03:02  this width point, the one below my cursor.

00:03:04  Then I would just go ahead and press the alt key

00:03:07  or the opt key on the Mac and drag the width point,

00:03:10  not the handles, because that allows you

00:03:13  to adjust the handles independently,

00:03:14  but rather the point itself.

00:03:17  And now I'm going to duplicate it again

00:03:19  and then I'll duplicate it a third time like so.

00:03:23  So you've got to be careful

00:03:24  to make sure that you're alt dragging or opt dragging

00:03:27  the width point itself.

00:03:29  All right, now I'm going to add a width point

00:03:30  at this location, just by double-clicking this time

00:03:33  in order to bring up the Width Point Edit dialog box.

00:03:36  I want this one to be symmetrical, however,

00:03:38  so I'm going to make sure the chain icon is turned off,

00:03:41  and I'm going to change Side 1 and Side 2 to 5 pt a piece

00:03:45  like so.

00:03:46  And notice that there is no preview checkbox

00:03:49  inside this dialog box.

00:03:51  And that's because it's always previewing your changes

00:03:53  in the background.

00:03:54  Note also that the delete button is once again dimmed.

00:03:57  That's not because we can't delete this width point.

00:04:00  It's rather because so far, we haven't created it.

00:04:03  All right, so I'll go ahead and click the OK button,

00:04:05  and then I'll double-click right there.

00:04:07  And I'm going to turn the link icon on,

00:04:11  now that the values are the same.

00:04:12  And I'm going to take the Side 1 value

00:04:15  up to 7 pt, let's say, in order to create

00:04:17  this effect right here.

00:04:19  I'll click OK and then finally,

00:04:20  I'll create a width point at this bottom left location,

00:04:23  and I'm just going to take the total width value

00:04:25  up to, let's say, 18 points.

00:04:27  And I'll click OK.

00:04:29  All right, now there's one checkbox

00:04:31  that I've so far ignored, and I want to show you

00:04:33  how it works.

00:04:34  I'll go ahead and double-click on this point

00:04:35  that I just created in order to bring up

00:04:38  the Total Width dialog box.

00:04:39  And notice this checkbox, Adjusted Adjoining Width Points.

00:04:43  If you turn that checkbox on,

00:04:45  then any modifications you make to this total width value

00:04:49  will affect the adjacent width points as well,

00:04:53  going all the way up to the endpoints by the way.

00:04:57  And if you take this value down,

00:04:58  then you're going to reduce the thickness

00:05:00  of the neighboring width points.

00:05:02  And so I'll take it to right about there, I figure,

00:05:05  and then I'll go ahead and click OK to accept that change,

00:05:08  and I'll press the V key to switch back

00:05:10  to my Black Arrow Tool, so we can see

00:05:12  the modified path outline

00:05:13  free of the width points and their handles.

00:05:16  And that's how you adjust width points

00:05:18  with numerical precision,

00:05:19  just by double-clicking with the Width Tool

00:05:22  here inside Illustrator.

00:00:48  Now the line weight value indicates

00:00:51  the maximum thickness of the line.

00:00:53  And so if I take that value up to 80 points, let's say,

00:00:57  then a line is allowed to get as thick as 80 points

00:01:00  but no thicker, or more reasonably, I would go ahead

00:01:04  and take that value down to, let's say, 30 points.

00:01:07  But my guess is that instead of just accepting

00:01:09  one of these default profiles,

00:01:11  you'll want to customize the thickness of your path.

00:01:14  And you can do that by selecting the Width Tool

00:01:16  midway down the Toolbox.

00:01:18  And if you don't see it, then go ahead and click and hold

00:01:21  on one of these Liquefy Tools,

00:01:23  and choose the Width Tool from the top of the flyout menu.

00:01:26  Notice also that it has a keyboard shortcut

00:01:28  of shift + w for width.

00:01:30  And now if you hover over the path outline,

00:01:32  you'll not only see the usual anchor points,

00:01:34  but you'll also see these white width points.

00:01:37  And as soon as you find one with your cursor,

00:01:40  then you'll see two handles on either side of it as well.

00:01:43  And so one way to use a width point

00:01:44  is to click on it to select it,

00:01:46  and that makes it persistent so you can keep track of it,

00:01:49  at which point, you can drag out on one of these handles

00:01:52  to make the stroke thicker,

00:01:53  or you can drag inward to make it thinner.

00:01:56  Now if you're lucky, you don't have to actually

00:01:58  click on a width point, you can just hover over it

00:02:01  to find the handles and drag the handles directly like so.

00:02:06  Now one of the more amazing things about the Width Tool

00:02:08  is that it allows you to work on deselected

00:02:11  and selected paths alike.

00:02:13  So notice this orange sunshine path right here.

00:02:17  It ends in two round arrowheads.

00:02:20  In front of those arrowheads we're seeing stars.

00:02:23  And so notice clicking on a star

00:02:25  isn't going to make any difference,

00:02:26  and that's because the star doesn't have a stroke.

00:02:29  So you need a stroke to start with.

00:02:31  But assuming that you have a stroke,

00:02:32  as we do in the case of this orange path,

00:02:35  then I can just go ahead and click and drag

00:02:37  in order to create a new width point,

00:02:40  and what I'm going to do is go ahead

00:02:41  and make the path a little thinner at this location.

00:02:44  Now notice whereas normally if I was to change

00:02:48  the line weight value, I would change the size

00:02:50  of the arrowheads as well,

00:02:51  but that doesn't happen when you're adding width points.

00:02:54  The arrowhead goes ahead and stays its original size.

00:02:57  Also notice that once you're working

00:02:58  with a variable-width stroke,

00:03:00  you will see width points at either end,

00:03:03  in which case I can go ahead and make that stroke flare

00:03:05  by dragging outward on this handle.

00:03:09  All right so now let's say I decide

00:03:10  to put another width point right there,

00:03:13  and then, of course, I decide that's not really

00:03:16  a good location for it.

00:03:17  Why, then, you can drag a width point to any location

00:03:21  you like, and it will expand and contract the stroke

00:03:24  like some sort of crazy tapeworm.

00:03:27  All right, now I'm going to go to the end point here,

00:03:29  and I'm going to make it thinner like so,

00:03:31  and I might add another width point

00:03:33  right about there and make it pretty thin as well.

00:03:37  All right now I want you to see down here at the bottom

00:03:40  of the stroke panel, that in addition to the profile

00:03:43  which represents the profile as it exists now,

00:03:47  so in other words, we're seeing our customized changes,

00:03:50  we've got this icon right here

00:03:51  that allows us to flip the direction

00:03:54  of our variable-width stroke.

00:03:55  But notice if I click on it, I flip the mountain

00:03:58  and not the orange stroke,

00:04:00  and that's because it's the mountain that's selected.

00:04:02  Even though we were working on the orange stroke,

00:04:04  it is not a selected path outline,

00:04:06  as indicated by the stroke color

00:04:09  up here in the control panel.

00:04:11  And so if you want to switch focus to that stroke,

00:04:13  you need to press and hold the control key,

00:04:15  or the command key on the Mac,

00:04:17  to temporarily gain access

00:04:18  to the last used arrow tool,

00:04:20  which in my case is the black arrow,

00:04:22  and then go ahead and click on that orange path outline,

00:04:25  and then release the control or command key

00:04:28  to return to the width tool.

00:04:30  And now notice in addition to the stroke turning orange

00:04:32  up here in the control panel,

00:04:34  we're seeing a very different profile

00:04:37  listed at the bottom of the stroke panel.

00:04:39  And so now if I click on the Flip Along icon,

00:04:41  I end up flipping the desired path outline.

00:04:44  All right, also notice next door to Flip Along

00:04:47  is Flip Across, but it's dimmed,

00:04:50  and that's because so far our variable-width strokes

00:04:52  are centered on their path outlines.

00:04:55  You can change that, however, and I'll demonstrate that

00:04:57  on this green path outline.

00:04:59  So I'll go ahead and control click or command click on it

00:05:03  in order to select that path,

00:05:05  and then instead of just dragging

00:05:07  one of these handles right here,

00:05:09  I'm going to press the alt key

00:05:11  or the option key on the Mac and drag a handle,

00:05:14  and notice what that does is it allows me

00:05:16  to move one handle independently of the other

00:05:20  in order to make the thickness of the path asymmetrical.

00:05:24  And now that I've done that, you can see that

00:05:26  the Flip Across icon is now available,

00:05:28  at which point I'll go ahead and click on it

00:05:31  in order to flip the thick portion of the path

00:05:33  to the inside of this mountain.

00:05:36  And now I want you to see that if I just go ahead

00:05:38  and drag one of these handles

00:05:40  instead of pressing the alt or option key,

00:05:42  that I move them together with each other,

00:05:45  but I'm doing so relative to their new length.

00:05:48  And that, folks, is how you assign variable-width strokes

00:05:51  as well as customize those strokes using the Width Tool

00:05:55  here inside Illustrator.

00:00:59  And now notice if I click off the letters

00:01:01  to deselect them, and then I go ahead and zoom in tight,

00:01:05  on the a and the b like so,

00:01:07  I can reselect all of those letters

00:01:09  just by returning to the select menu

00:01:12  and choosing what is now

00:01:13  the last command in the menu, letters.

00:01:15  And that will go ahead and reselect

00:01:18  every single letter in the document.

00:01:20  All right but in truth I'm zoomed in

00:01:21  a little too tight here.

00:01:23  What I want to do is create some guides

00:01:25  that will help demonstrate how things have gotten off,

00:01:29  where these letters are concerned,

00:01:30  as a function of that 20-point stroke.

00:01:33  And so I'll go ahead and press Control + R,

00:01:36  or Command + R in a Mac, in order to bring out my rulers.

00:01:39  And I'll drag a horizontal guide down

00:01:41  from the top ruler so that it snaps into alignment

00:01:44  with the top anchor point in the f,

00:01:47  which by the way notice aligns perfectly

00:01:49  with the top anchor point in the h,

00:01:52  and yet we're not seeing that alignment

00:01:53  because 10 points, that is half of that stroke,

00:01:56  pops up on the edge of the f,

00:01:59  whereas it just abruptly ends at the top of the h.

00:02:02  All right, now I'll go ahead and drag out

00:02:04  another horizontal guide from that top ruler,

00:02:07  so that it snaps into alignment

00:02:09  with the bottom of the f.

00:02:10  And notice even though that bottom anchor point

00:02:13  in the f is precisely aligned with

00:02:15  the bottom anchor point in the e,

00:02:17  we're not seeing that alignment.

00:02:19  And that's because the bottom of the f ends abruptly,

00:02:22  whereas half of that stroke continues around

00:02:24  the bottom of the e.

00:02:26  We have an even bigger problem

00:02:28  where the bottoms of the b and d are concerned,

00:02:31  because notice here as a function

00:02:34  of this half-a-line weight,

00:02:36  that's dropping down below the curved portions

00:02:39  of both letters, we're covering up the stems,

00:02:42  which come down just as far.

00:02:44  So what I'm gonna do,

00:02:45  just to make my point that much more obvious,

00:02:47  I'm gonna scroll over here just a little bit,

00:02:50  and I'm gonna hide the rulers by pressing Control + R,

00:02:52  or Command + R on a Mac.

00:02:54  And then I'll go up the the view menu, choose Guides,

00:02:56  and choose the Lock Guides command to turn it off,

00:03:00  and then I'll marquee this bottom guide right there,

00:03:03  and I'm gonna make a copy of it ten points down

00:03:06  by pressing Shift + Alt + Down Arrow,

00:03:08  that would be Shift + Option + Down Arrow on the Mac,

00:03:10  so that we now have a guide that's aligned

00:03:13  to the bottom of the curved portions of these letters.

00:03:16  And now I'll click on this top guide to select it,

00:03:19  and I'll press Shift + Alt + Up Arrow,

00:03:22  or Shift + Option + Up Arrow on the Mac,

00:03:24  in order to create a guide at the perceived top of the f.

00:03:28  All right now I'll go ahead

00:03:28  and click off the guide to deselect it,

00:03:30  and I'll return to the View menu,

00:03:32  choose Guides, and then choose Lock Guides

00:03:35  to turn the command back on,

00:03:36  and that way I won't mess up my guidelines.

00:03:39  All right now I'll return to the Select menu

00:03:41  and choose letters

00:03:43  in order to select all the letters in the document,

00:03:45  and I'll click on

00:03:46  the word Stroke up here in the Control panel,

00:03:48  and I'll switch to the Projecting Cap,

00:03:51  just so we can see what kind of difference it makes.

00:03:53  And notice that it goes ahead and extends

00:03:55  the crossbar here on the f quite nicely,

00:03:58  so that we have some nice sharp transitions,

00:04:01  but we have a few problems here in the g,

00:04:03  as well as the other letters

00:04:05  such as the d, and the b,

00:04:07  that have multiple subpaths

00:04:08  that are intersecting each other.

00:04:10  However, notice that all the letters

00:04:12  are rising to the occasion right here.

00:04:15  So we can see that the projecting cap

00:04:17  is extending all the way to that top guideline

00:04:20  as well as all the way down to the bottom guideline

00:04:23  which means that we have some decent stems

00:04:26  for our b and d in particular.

00:04:29  But what's gonna work out better all the way around,

00:04:31  is to click on the word Stroke once again

00:04:33  and switch to the Round Cap

00:04:35  in order to produce this rounded effect here.

00:04:38  That does leave us with a problem however.

00:04:40  Notice if I go ahead and scroll over here,

00:04:43  we're missing an edge down here on the left side of the h,

00:04:46  and we also have a sharp corner

00:04:48  over here on the right side of the letter e.

00:04:51  Now to demonstrate why we're having this problem on the h,

00:04:54  I'll press the A key to switch to the white arrow tool,

00:04:56  then I'll go ahead and click off the letter,

00:04:58  and I'll select this anchor point

00:05:00  as well as these other three.

00:05:02  So in other words I'm clicking on this anchor point

00:05:04  and then I'm Shift + clicking on the other three.

00:05:07  And now I'll press Shift + Right Arrow

00:05:09  to nudge those points to the right.

00:05:10  And you can see what we really have here

00:05:12  is a corner at this location.

00:05:15  And now that I've moved the points over,

00:05:17  we've reestablished this miter join,

00:05:20  but as soon as I move things back

00:05:22  we lose the miter join because our miter limit is too low.

00:05:26  And as soon as you have two segments

00:05:27  that are right on top of each other like this,

00:05:29  then it doesn't matter what you set the miter limit to,

00:05:32  your corner is gonna get beveled.

00:05:34  All right so to take care of this problem,

00:05:36  I'll return to the Select menu

00:05:37  and chose the letters command,

00:05:39  and then I'll click on the word Stroke.

00:05:41  Obviously the miter join is not gonna work out for us.

00:05:44  You could try a bevel join,

00:05:46  but it's not gonna have any effect on the h,

00:05:48  and it's just gonna slightly clip the corner on the e.

00:05:51  What we really want is the nice Round Join,

00:05:54  which is gonna give us a round corner on the e,

00:05:56  and it's gonna totally take care of our problem

00:05:58  here on the h, after which point,

00:06:00  I'll just go ahead and press the Escape key

00:06:02  to hide that panel,

00:06:03  and I'll press Control + zero, or Command + zero,

00:06:05  to center my zoom.

->
