00:02:47  So you just have to be vigilant to make sure

00:02:48  that Illustrator isn't adding more points

00:02:51  to your path than you want.

00:02:52  Alright, now I'm going to zoom in on this metal area

00:02:55  and I'm going to surround it with a different path outline.

00:02:58  And so I'm going to start things off

00:02:59  just by clicking four times like so

00:03:02  in order to add a bunch of points around this region.

00:03:05  And then I'm going to convert them all to corner points

00:03:07  by double-clicking on each and every one like so.

00:03:11  And you might ask, well, why am I drawing them first

00:03:13  and then converting them?

00:03:14  And the reason is just this time around

00:03:16  I prefer to work that way.

00:03:17  Alright, I'm going to move these guys down

00:03:20  and inward like so,

00:03:21  and then I'm going to create a new point right here

00:03:23  and drag it up, so that we have this nice arc right there

00:03:28  at the bottom of the bristles.

00:03:29  And now I'll move these guys down and in as well.

00:03:33  And I'll go ahead and click here

00:03:35  to add another smooth point,

00:03:36  and I'll drag it up to add another arc.

00:03:39  And if I want it to bend a little more

00:03:41  then I would take these corner points down like so.

00:03:45  Alright, now let's tear things apart

00:03:46  using the Shape Builder Tool,

00:03:48  but I don't want to ruin these original path outlines,

00:03:50  so I'm going to go ahead and make a copy of this layer

00:03:53  by clicking on the fly out menu icon

00:03:55  in the upper right corner of the Layers panel,

00:03:57  and choosing Duplicate brush parts.

00:04:00  And then I'll double-click on an empty portion of that layer

00:04:02  to bring up the Layer Options dialog box.

00:04:05  And I'll go ahead and call this guy paintbrush

00:04:07  and I'll change its Color to Gold.

00:04:09  And then I'll click OK.

00:04:11  Alright, now I'll turn off

00:04:13  the brush parts layer to protect it,

00:04:15  and I'll select everything on this layer,

00:04:17  the paintbrush layer,

00:04:18  by clicking in its upper right corner right there,

00:04:20  where that little triangular wedge is,

00:04:22  and then I'll grab my Shape Builder Tool.

00:04:24  And I'll go ahead and double-click

00:04:27  on the central portion there,

00:04:28  I'll double-click on the bristles,

00:04:30  and I'll double-click on the handle as well,

00:04:32  just to make sure everything's divided up.

00:04:34  And then I'll press the V key

00:04:36  to switch to the black arrow tool.

00:04:38  I'll click off the path outlines to deselect them.

00:04:40  And I'll go ahead and click on this guy

00:04:43  and shift + click on this one

00:04:44  and press the backspace key,

00:04:46  or the delete key on a Mac, to get rid of them.

00:04:48  Alright, now I'll go ahead and click

00:04:49  on the bristles shape right there

00:04:51  and I'm going to change its fill to this shade of brown,

00:04:54  the one that begins R =117,

00:04:57  and then I'll click on the handle,

00:04:59  and I'll change it to the shade of purple

00:05:01  that begins with R 102.

00:05:04  Alright, now I'm going to press ctrl + 0,

00:05:05  or cmd + 0 on a Mac, to center my zoom.

00:05:08  And I'll click off the paths to deselect them.

00:05:10  And that my friends is how you create

00:05:14  using a combination of the Curvature Tool

00:03:17  but what I found was that this area right here,

00:03:21  the interior edge, kept looking lumpy

00:03:24  regardless of just about anything I did.

00:03:26  Which is why it's totally okay

00:03:28  if you see something like this

00:03:30  to switch to a different tool.

00:03:31  And the great thing about the tools that we've been seeing

00:03:34  is that they're perfectly capable

00:03:35  of editing each other's results.

00:03:37  For example, if I wanted to at this point

00:03:39  I could go ahead and switch to the Pencil Tool,

00:03:42  which of course I can get by pressing the N key.

00:03:44  And then with this path selected

00:03:46  I could go ahead and drag along it,

00:03:49  taking special care by the way

00:03:51  to make sure that I'm beginning and ending my drag

00:03:53  on the path outline.

00:03:55  And then I'll go ahead and release

00:03:56  and I got that result, which I really don't like by the way,

00:03:59  so I'm going to undo by pressing control + Z,

00:04:02  or command + Z on the Mac.

00:04:03  And I'm going to try again,

00:04:04  see if I can get a smoother result

00:04:05  and this does not look smooth at all.

00:04:07  So you know what?

00:04:08  What I could do, I could keep doing that if I want to,

00:04:10  or why don't we try a different tool?

00:04:12  Just want to make the point that that is totally possible.

00:04:33  if we start smoothing this out.

00:04:35  And the thing is that's not really seeming very right to me.

00:04:38  So I'm going to switch back to the Pencil Tool.

00:04:41  Hopefully this is giving you a sense of how much

00:04:44  back and forthing you can do if you want.

00:04:46  And now I'll press the enter key,

00:04:47  or the return key on a Mac,

00:04:48  to bring up the Pen Tool Options.

00:04:49  And I'm going to crank this guy to Smooth,

00:04:51  and click OK.

00:04:53  And now I'll try it again, cross my fingers

00:04:56  and release at this point.

00:04:58  And that's getting to be pretty good, I guess.

00:05:01  We're not really following the path outline very well,

00:05:03  so let me see if I can do that a little better.

00:05:05  And I end up with this result here.

00:05:07  After which point I could switch back

00:05:09  to the Curvature Tool, if I want to.

00:05:11  And notice now I have way more points,

00:05:13  but this is what I want you to see,

00:05:15  if I start adjusting these points

00:05:17  it's very possible, well in that case nothing happened,

00:05:19  but it's very possible that I'm going

00:05:21  to get different results.

00:05:22  And this guy it looks to me like we don't really need him,

00:05:25  so I'll just click on him and press the backspace key,

00:05:27  or the delete key on a Mac, to get rid of him.

00:05:29  Then I'll select this guy and press backspace or delete,

00:05:31  that looks like that was a mistake,

00:05:33  so I'll put him back by pressing control + Z.

00:05:35  Let's see if I get rid of this guy what happens.

00:05:37  Well that looks pretty similar to what I had before

00:05:39  I started with the Pencil Tool,

00:05:42  but you get the idea.

00:05:43  Eventually you can move these guys around

00:05:45  until you start getting smoother result.

00:05:48  And having demonstrated that about as well

00:05:50  as I think I'm going to,

00:05:51  I'll go ahead and switch back to the black arrow tool

00:05:53  and click off of the shape.

00:05:54  And you can see even though it didn't occur on video

00:05:57  that in the final version that I drew here

00:05:59  that I do have a pretty darn smooth path outline.

00:06:02  So it is ultimately possible to achieve

00:06:04  the effects you're looking for.

00:06:06  And that's how you draw

00:06:07  a highly specific custom path outline

00:06:09  with varying degrees of success

00:06:11  using at least in part the Curvature Tool

00:06:14  here inside Illustrator.

00:02:46  so I'm just drawing any old shapes here.

00:02:49  And I also recommend that you draw each one

00:02:51  independently, as opposed to just drawing one

00:02:54  and then copying it a bunch of times

00:02:56  because that sort of duplication is oftentimes

00:02:59  pretty obvious, especially when you're drawing something

00:03:01  like this that's only going to take you,

00:03:03  you know what, maybe five minutes in the first place.

00:03:05  So I'll just go ahead and continue to click around here

00:03:08  and if at any time you change your mind

00:03:10  about a placement of a point,

00:03:12  or you want to add another one,

00:03:13  why, by all means, definitely do that.

00:03:16  All right, I've only got a couple more

00:03:17  and then I'll tell you after I get done

00:03:19  drawing these blobs of paint,

00:03:21  I am going to move onto the hole

00:03:24  right there inside this painter's palette,

00:03:27  but first let's go ahead and draw this guy.

00:03:30  And I've giving it a lot of edge action,

00:03:33  once again, I want to make that clear.

00:03:35  But you don't have to,

00:03:36  you can do anything you want.

00:03:38  This guy seems like he's got a little bit

00:03:39  too much edge action.

00:03:41  But in any event,

00:03:42  if you press Control Shift A,

00:03:43  or Command Shift A in order to deselect everything,

00:03:46  you can see that even though I've been

00:03:48  as random as possible,

00:03:49  that I have some very smooth shapes, indeed.

00:03:53  All right, now this hole is a little more difficult,

00:03:55  at least if you want to exactly trace it,

00:03:58  that's going to be very hard.

00:03:59  Because the Curvature Tool is not the

00:04:01  most predictable tool in terms of

00:04:03  getting specific results.

00:04:05  And as we'll see, the tool that's much better than that

00:04:08  is the Pen Tool, as we'll see in the next chapter.

00:04:10  But for now I'm just going to go ahead

00:04:12  and click to centerpoint there, there,

00:04:14  right inside the paintbrush,

00:04:16  the bottom portion of the paintbrush,

00:04:18  some place down here,

00:04:19  and then we want a fourth point right there.

00:04:21  And notice that I, as predicted,

00:04:24  did not exactly trace this hole.

00:04:26  And so what I need to do is just move these points around.

00:04:29  You really don't want to give something as

00:04:31  elliptical as this more than four points,

00:04:33  because you're going to start

00:04:34  flattening out your curve, if you do.

00:04:36  So my recommendation is to not get

00:04:39  too hung up on things,

00:04:40  just move the points to more or less

00:04:42  the locations in this video.

00:04:43  And as you can see,

00:04:44  they're not equally distance from each other,

00:04:47  by any means.

00:04:48  So we have essentially two axes going right now,

00:04:51  we've got this one going up into the left,

00:04:54  and then we have this other one going

00:04:55  very slightly up and to the right.

00:04:58  And so you can see they're not

00:04:59  crossing each other perpendicularly,

00:05:01  and that really is the key to getting halfway

00:05:03  decent rotated ellipses

00:05:05  out of the Curvature Tool.

00:05:07  At which point I'll just go ahead and press

00:05:08  Control zero, or Command zero on the Mac

00:05:11  to zoom out.

00:05:11  And I'll press Control Shift A,

00:05:13  or Command Shift A to deselect that oval.

00:05:16  And I'm going to double click on the name

00:05:18  of this layer here inside the Layers panel

00:05:20  and I'm going to change it to Palette.

00:05:23  And then I'll press the Enter key,

00:05:24  or the Return key on the Mac.

00:05:26  And that might seem like a strange name,

00:05:27  given that the one thing I haven't drawn yet

00:05:29  is the palette, but it's coming in the next movie.

00:05:32  And now I'm just going to go ahead

00:05:33  and quickly color these shapes

00:05:34  by pressing the V key to switch back

00:05:37  to the black arrow tool.

00:05:38  And I'll click on this guy up here

00:05:40  and I'm going to change its Fill

00:05:42  to this shade of Pink that begins R237,

00:05:45  these are all default colors

00:05:47  included with the basic RGB document.

00:05:49  And so I'll just give you the R value.

00:05:51  Next I'll select this second guy right there

00:05:53  and I'll change it to the Yellow

00:05:55  that begins R252.

00:05:57  I'll select this next guy in line

00:05:59  and I'll change him to this Green

00:06:01  that begins R57.

00:06:03  And then I'll select the next one,

00:06:05  he's going to be Blue,

00:06:06  and it's going to be this shade of blue

00:06:08  right here, it starts with R41.

00:06:10  And then finally, this guy,

00:06:11  I figure he wants to be Orange,

00:06:14  and so I'll change him to the medium orange

00:06:15  which begins R247.

00:06:18  And then I'll go ahead and click off those shapes
